View Full Version : How long before the first level 99?
How long before the first level 99? That is, if the cap is level 99, if not, whatever the cap may be.
Predict away.

This will be quite an achievement. First max level character in Diablo 3. No one can beat that, ever.
Who was the first in D2? Anyone from this forum? :scratchchin:

i say 2 months , given an international team spanned across the timezones that played the beta version and have around 24 players internationally having 8 hours a day each with an continuous playing plan.
It's really hard to say at this point because we have too little information.

I don't remember who was the first 99 in DII. In D2C, I don't think I have ever seen one. Character over level 90 was a pretty rare sight. Even characters between 85-90 did not account for the majority of players that could be seen in games.
One thing I do remember though is the first person to beat the game in Hard Core. He was a dude from Germany. He did it with a necromancer, got Diablo beaten on all 3 level of difficulties thus becoming the first person to earn the title King. It was pretty amazing if you ask me since the necromancer back then was far from being as strong as he is today and if I remember correctly I think he was like level 43 or 45.

I agree. We don't know the exp curve, yet.
Is it even possible? I thought D2C is like D1. Basically impossible to get to lvl 99. :scratchchin:

Honestly, I don't know if there ever was a level 99 in D2C. Like I said, even characters over 90 were very uncommon and took serious dedication to achieve that kind of level. Back when D2C was released I played it like crazy and never achieved a character over 85.
I distinctly remember reading about this barbarian who was the first ever level 99 in diablo 2 classic. It was a team of players that achieved that and it got considerable news coverage. If i recall correctly they were German?
within 1 month. Will be a beta tester. Hard to say without knowing the XP rates.

It was EuroBarb! :) There was a race between that character and another Barb with a very similar name, like AsiaBarb or USBarb, or something like that.
But yeah - group of people in Europe (Germany mainly) playing round the clock, team would clear Chaos Sanctuary and all but kill Diablo, EuroBarb would come into the full game, kill Diablo alone in the CS...rinse and repeat
This was back in the days (everyone get nostalgic for a moment here :) ) when WW-Barbs with well imbued Bec-de-Corbins or Pikes were the best you could get.

Well, I kind of hope it takes at least a full year of steady playing (24 hours/day) to reach lev 99. Some people may disagree with me, but I think the d2 LoD ladder is a bit sad becasue of the number of lev 99's seen there after a few months. I want d3 laddder to be more serious and hard. I think even if d2 LoD had the dupe and bot problems fixed, it would still be too easy. Just MO though.

Max level in D3 will be 98 :p
First 99 ever in D2C was GerBarb, with RusBarb as a very close second. Huge teams were behind both, with shifts aiding them in delivering only the final blows to hell Diablo.
Leveling was insanely slow, I got my first char( multishotter dex bowazon, still a good build :) ) to 87. Things became easier after the fix of the bow damage bug in 1.04, and finally with the expansion.

Has the level cap been confirmed to be 99 in D3? I always thought that 99 was a strange number to pick and it should have just been a nice even 100.

Now that someone is mentioning it, it rings a bell. I don't think that would have been possible without a team effort because you're right about levelling being slow as a turtle.

Man - I remember that! My mate and I scored a unique Executioner's Blade off her during that test...good times! :)

I think D3 will be a lot different leveling-wise than D2. I think it will pay off more to be grouped, and there wont be much grinding until you get fairly late into the game.
I'm voting for within 3 months, as you'll always have those nuts who play non-stop.
I'm incline to agree with those here thinking it'd take months to reach lvl 99. Just look at WoW, everything started out much harder and I have seen no end to them making the game play easily to appeal to the mass.
Blizz will no doubt built in a mechanism to throttle the challenge lvl of the game...so at first to make it hard to garner attention....it'd be no fun to see the top few contenders jumping like 10 lvls in a day. Blizz will surely milk the beginning in the tune of like maybe 0-2 lvls a day. It'd be similar to their version of guilds completing raid/dungeon progression.
I hope it takes months to reach the max level simply because it would be nice if max level were at least a little harder to reach than it is currently in Diablo II. If it is to be a happy medium between D2C and D2LoD that'd be fine with me.

XP was shared in D2C, right? So basically the soon-to-be-level-99 character just hopped from game to game to kill Diablo to get the XP - effectively just killing the biggest XP-giver in the game many times per minute?
How long after the initial release was level 99 reached?
I remember the stress test also :) I reached level 14, I think. As far as I remember, someone was going mid-twenties, like levels 22 or above with only killing blood raven. I also remember the gem shrine hunt :))
Blood Raven capable of dropping unique executioner's blade??
Better yet - exceptional uniques in D2C( hint: nonexistent ).
I still remember finding my almost perfect rare gothic bow in hell act 2, a simple maggot dropped it. Tears of joy, and then get up and go to work :).
It was shared xp, with a bonus for the killing blow. I don't remember how much time did it take, but by then even I was in my late sixties, so I'd guess around a month.
