View Full Version : Cow LVL??
Almost every diablo fan knows about cow lvl, In my oppinion wether its important or not, is it made diablo kind of a joke, another thing was cow runs sucked, you just had to clear huge areas of ground filled with cows.
Anyway keep up the great work. i'm sure you are Diablo 3 rocks!!!

Unfortunately, the Secret Cow Level doesn't add much to the game. The devs should spend their time and effort on adding/improving other areas of the game.

Yeah, I agree, thats how I feel about it.

Couldn't agree more, I hate how those Easter eggs take over a game. Instead of making a thing like a cow level, I would say just insert various things a character can see or find. Like lets say for example one of Cain's speeches involves a thing about Gheed being a chiseler. Or maybe a reference to Farnam(sp?) the drunk.

You can't listen to those inspired voice actors (where they the devs?) and tell me that doesn't add much ;)

Fun areas are fun. Blizzard games need easter eggs. Besides, the Cow Level probably took 30 minutes for them to make.
They add a welcome laugh (and slaughterfest) to the game. It's much more fun hearing the cows scream and die than running Baal (again).
Also, how much does, say, Warriv add to the game? Or Natalya, Glegash (or something like that... the dude next to Atma in Act II). They give some chatlogs. I seriously think more people play the Cow lvl than there are people who listen to everything a person has to say.

30 minutes? I don't know about that...
And let's not forget, they had to nerf down the drops when the cow level was being exploited. Plus all the editing, programmers playing the cow level themselves, etc.
I think Diablo 3 is to mature for cow lvl.

Cow runs were far more enjoyable than Baal runs. I for one like the cow level.

Cow runs were far more enjoyable than Baal runs. I for one like the cow level.
except that cow runs consisted mainly of:
BARBA: cow portal plz
AMA: tp plz
PALLY: someone gimme leg i can make
NECRO: someone get leg
BARBA: i dont have leg
*BARBA HAS LEFT THE GAME. DIABLO'S MINIONS WEAKEN*

AMA: tp plz
PALLY: omg someone killed king
*PALLY HAS LEFT THE GAME. DIABLO'S MINIONS WEAKEN*
NECRO: cow tp plz
AMA: someone make tp plz
etc etc etc
And before you know it, you have already spent 45 minutes dealing with this type of crap, when you could have leveled twice in Baal run during this time.

1 - Milka et al. existed for a reason. Good cow runs are considerably faster than good Baal runs.
2 - If you opt for public runs you can spend just as much time listening to the following:
Barb - 'Who go?'
Barb - 'Sorc port'
Necro - 'Sorc port'
Sorc1 - 'Too low level'
Everyone else - 'Sorc port'
Sorc1 - 'Sorc port'
Everyone else - 'You are the sorc'
*sorc ports and dies*
*sorc leaves game*
Barb - 'Sorc port'
Ama - 'Sorc port'
Necro - 'There is no sorc'
*Everyone leaves*
etc.

Aw, get rid of everything. Cow level, boss runs, rushing, mfing, leeching, teleing, cookie cutters, one point wonders, spamming games, ad bots, bot runs, everything must go. Burn it. Burn it all.
But keep temp bans....people deserve those.
If they do all this, we will spend our d3 days in a true paradise.

It's not that much work. One little cow model, a few textures from another area in a boring field, a few sound effects and a small amount of coding, and you have something that is amusing, fun to level or MF in, and adds a bit of flavor to the game. It may not fit with the overall story but has D2 ever been a hardcore RPI game (look it up) that needs to have everything have a reason or an explanation?
I think Cow Level had its time, was fun back in 1.09 but I wouldn't miss it if I don't see it again or the likes of it. Something that was almost created as a joke becoming the focus point of the game, I don't think it's a good idea. I don't think that Baal runs are any better by the way....

i liked the cow lvl and i hope there is something similar in D3. You can't have the game be entirely serious, part of the fun of blizzard games is the weird/fun things they put into their games. And i really doubt that adding in something like this would take that much away from the game. Maybe they could make the cow lvl relevant by making certain items only available there or something.

I would definetly miss the cow level if they removed it. I guess it wouldn't be too bad, blizzard would still have some entertaining stuff to be found.

I loved all the little jokes that were put in D2 like the cow level and the chat gem. I think they wouldn't be as funny if they were repeated and I hope Bliz thinks up some new jokes for D3.
Maybe with all of the complaints about the game being too bright they will make a super bright and cartoony secret level.
i like the cow level, and the amusement.
it's a serious game, but it still have fun sides, and that's great imo.
i dont know if i would miss it, i dont think i'll stop playin D2, even though D3 is the greatest game ever (it might could be?).
i think they should make something similar in D3, some catchy little detail, run, map or something.
I thought the cow lvl was a fun addition. I hope they do something similiar in D3!
They definitely need some fun runs it's small stuff like that, that hook me to a game even more.

if they did another cow level kinda thing they need to make it so if you kill the damn cow king you can still play in it, that was so damn annoying.
personally though, i think it was funny to put it in d2 but thats only cause of all the d1 rumors and d3 does not need anything like this.
There is no Purple Penguin Level.
you've never seen the Purple Penguin Level? :O
I think that Blizz should bring back a fun area like Cows. The area should also be densely packed with monsters and the monsters should give lots of experience and be relatively easy to kill.
I think that Cows was a great part of DII and when Blizz took it away the game sucked. I know Cows isn't for everyone, but if you don't like it you don't have to play there. Personally I loved that level.
I wouldn't mind fighting something new. My arteries clog at the sight of so many Cows on screen at once. Perhaps some other animal should be persecuted for our Diablo III pleasure. :)
Or fruits and vegetables..

Don't confuse the cow level with the gameplay issues it created by poor implementation. The cow level was awesome in D2C, since you could only do it once per char per diff level, and it wasn't a great reward; it was just a bonus area for fun, easter egg style. It was fun and different and amusing. And the initial discovery of it was a time of great excitement, when every player wanted to learn more and see it for themselves.
It became a problem when they boosted the cow exp and drops so much in d2x, and made it possible to do the area over and over again. Of course a wide open level with valuable monsters who are very slow and have zero resistances is a horrible game design idea, since it's unbalancing and if chars can do it over and over again... they will. Plus it greatly favored chars with strong AoE attacks, and party exp sharing made it so that all chars could benefit.
The problem wasn't with the concept, it was the implementation, especially during v1.09.
As for the team taking design time to make fun, silly things... they've got to remain sane while working on the game. They can't go 5 or 6 years straight on the same project without some laughs and variety. Besides, how long do you really think the cow level took out of D2's dev time? It had one monster type and a very simple random level generation routine, and all the environmental artwork was reused from other act 1 sets. And I doubt they spent too long crowded into the sound booth, making "mooo" noises.

Agreed.
Keep easter eggs easter eggs. Don't try to replace the rest of the game with them.

Mine were more like this -
-gets leg in pw game on opener (ench usually)
-joins 5-7 player game with decent expected duration e.g. 'ACT 2 HELP' and opens
-rejoin/also join with killer
-clear
-repeat
I totally agree with everything Flux said. While I'd be equally happy with Blizz lacing the entire game with in jokes and easter eggs, I'm sure there would be a lot of whining about it detracting from the dark tone/immersion/whatever. Having the cow king serve a use as one of the best ways to get items like hots, death's set, lld rares is ok... making a joke the endgame (see 1.09) isn't.

All I'm hoping for is that Blizz doesn't rule with an iron fist like you seem to want to. Ok, I understand that you didn't like the Cow level as a way to help gain exp fast. However, a lot of people loved that, me included.
If you don't like something you don't have to play that area. If they leave it out, a lot of people like me will get a lot less enjoyment from the game.
The best thing about v1.09 DII for me was the non-linear game play that was outside of Blizzard's script. You want to only play through the game as Blizz intended, fine. For me that was fun for a few months and then I wanted to do other things. I played for years because of the variety that was there.
It makes me wonder how many people were even around for when the whole Cow Level thing started back in the original Diablo.

I would tend to agree with Flux here, the problem was really the implementation. Back in 1.09, cow level was almost ''forced'' upon players who were looking to level their characters since pretty much everyone was running the cows, it was pretty hard to do otherwise.

No, no one was forced to run cows. If you hate cows, but want to be in an 8 player game for more exp you could follow a cow series and quest in whatever separate area you want to play. I used to do that a lot in V1.10 when people were running Baal (Baal runs sucked IMO). Or you could join any other game out there or make your own. Don't try to tell me that with tens of thousands of people on bnet you couldn't find a game to level in.
I think you're making my case for me. If a lot of people were playing in the cow level, that makes it popular. If most people hated the cow level, no one would have been playing there.
