Perfect Gem Uses?

I haven't played bnet in quite a while, but when I left (beginning of 1.10 I think) pGems weren't really valuable. Now, I see them being traded in quantity for all sorts of nice items/runes. Is the 3pgem+magic weapon=reroll magic weapon stats still the primary use? Why are they valuable?

That recipe works on any magic item, but most of the time it's used for grand charms. Most pgems are used for that purpose while perfect amethysts and prubies are used a lot for crafting and a few people use pskulls to reroll rares.
