View Full Version : Question about drops

I have heard mentioned a number of times, that drops improve with speed of killing. I have been wondering for quite a while, if this is true, but have hesitated to pose the question, as it seems like kindof a beginner question :embarassed:. In my own experience, I tend to find better stuff, when encountering large quantities of enemies (like flayers in large packs), so this leads me to belive that the claim is true.
I would love to get some assurance though, and maybe some numbers on how this works (ie. are there more drops/higher level drops/larger quantity of magic items/... and how fast do you have to kill?).
The search function revealed nothing usefull.
Thank you in advance
Tom

It seems you understood it the wrong way. Let's assume that killing a monster is rolling a die and finding something good is rolling a 6. The quicker you can roll the die, the more rolls of 6 you will have. The chance for a 6 on a single roll will not change just because you are quick at rolling the die. It doesn't depend on the chance per roll, however, but on the chance per minute.
For instance, if one character kills 100 monsters in 10 minutes, while another character kills 200 monsters in 10 minutes, then the fastest character will get more drops (as twice as many monsters got a chance to drop something).
This is why people often suggest that you should not increase your MF percentage if that reduces your killing speed. Especially important for boss running; killing Mephisto twice as often is more important than having twice as much MF, since he already has a pretty good chance of dropping good items :)

Surviveability > Killing Power > Killing Speed > MF amount

If you can live with dying every now and then (and thus leveling a bit slower), forget about the surviveability of that equation. Things are a bit different at the beginning of a ladder season :p

It was a priority list, but for HC, the survival part has to be written in big, bold, underlined capitals.
