Diablo 2 LOD left off with Tyreal destroying the worldstone.
Some time After the Sin Wars Trilogy was written and published.
Recently (as of 1.11) Blizz added a new dungeon and Super Unique Boss by the name of Lilith, after the character in the Sin Wars Trilogy. That is an awful lot of work for a game that at the time was about 6 years old.
Also around this time I personally noticed that all the Video Game stores that were carrying the chest set of Diablo II were taking them off the shelves and replenishing stock of individual Diablo II and Diablo LOD.
So here is the Breakdown- All this information is either gathered from the Wikipedia entry on Diablo or the Diablo 3 site on Blizz.
The Angel Inarius with some other rouge angels and demons creates the Sanctuary.
Inarius breeds with Lilith, daughter of Mephisto, and creates the Nephalem. The Nephalem's power threatens Inarius and he decides to destroy them bringing conflict between the Angel and Lilith. Inarius banishes Lilith (who you latter defeat in LOD 1.11), but before she is banished she destroys all the other Rouge demons and angels leaving only the Nephalem. Inarius uses the Worldstone to keep the Nephalem's power at bay at it decreases generation by generation until finally humanity is the product. Inarius also uses the Worldstone to hide the knowledge of the Angel/Demon half breed Nephalem from the Angels in the Heavens.
In Diablo 2 LOD
Three Barbarian Warriors that protect the entrance to the chamber of the World Stone in Lord of Destruction. They must be defeated to enter the chamber. They refer to themselves as the spirits of the Nephalem, although it is unknown if this relates to the angel/demon hybrids of the Sin War novels.
In Diablo 2, Anya, who gives you the quest to defeat the ancients, say that the tales of the ancients are legendary and fairy tale like. She also adds her suspicion that humans were once more than what we were now. This might be reference to the "Sin War" novels and the power of the Nephalem
In L.O.D. tyrial destroys the Worldstone without knowing what effect it will have on Sanctuary.
On the Barbarian Classes page on the official Diablo III site, the author notes
"my journey to catalogue the various denizens, civilizations, and fauna of our world, I have traveled far and wide, but never before have I been struck with such dismay as when standing upon the ramparts of the ancient fortress of Bastion's Keep. I came to see firsthand the barbarians, those near-legendary, immense, relentless, dual-wielding furies of combat dwelling upon their sacred Mount Arreat.
Instead, I stand here looking at a mountain that has been torn asunder by some extraordinary force. The sight, I must confess, is incomprehensible. Yet what I see before me cannot be denied.
What truly happened here? Where are those majestic warriors of old?
If there are any barbarians left alive, they must truly be without hope. Perhaps this is the genesis of the rumors of monstrous things reported to resemble the barbarians in size and ferocity, but that are in reality nothing more than unreasoning, inhuman beasts. Could the destruction of not only their home but also their very beliefs have actually brought this magnificent race so low?"
In the concept art there are two photos of two figures overlooking an army at what seems to be the Mount Arreat Crater. With the author of the previous stating that the Barbarians can't be found the Army is not of human decent. With further examination it would seem that the two figures wear armor that cloaks over their heads like the concept are of the Angel in the same section.
So if I didn't know better than I would say-
Destroying the worldstone gave the Nephalem (Humanity/Barbarians) their power back, but also their Demon breed chaotic order back.
The destruction of the worldstone also revealed the Nephalem to the Heavens and so the Heavens are marching on Sanctuary to wipe out the Half Demon Half Angel offspring. The same could also be said for the Demons of Hell such as Lilith's brother Lucion, Belial "Lord of Hell", or Azmodan as the offspring could prove to be their adversaries (after all, even Baal had to receive the Relic of the Ancients from Nihlathak to pass the Three Nephalem Warriors outside of the Worldstone keep.)
Other things that peaked my intrest-
My hunch that Necromancers were being replaced has been strengthened by the overwhelming disgust that Abd al-Hazir exhibits.
"Master DeSoto is certain the origin of the walkers, and of the Festering Wood itself, can be traced to the foul doings of necromancers, who he claims are responsible for much of the evil that has befallen our world. He expounded in full to me his theory that the "whole Diablo incident", as he called it, was tied up in their dark arts as well."
He also shows much hatred for the walking skeletons and points that they are the work of Necromancers as well.
Under the Kharza bestiary page it notes
"Addendum: While researching the various hostile wildlife that adventurers regularly encounter in their work, I have been informed that the khazra have regained some of their lost vim and vigor and are once again ferociously attacking humans. As of this writing, such reports remain uncorroborated by reliable sources." citing that they, like the Barbarians, are growing rabid and hostile.
It also notes that the Kharza are of Umbaru ancestary along with the Witch Doctor race. It notes of the Witch Doctors
"The culture of the umbaru of the lower Teganze is fascinating and perplexing to those hailing from more civilized walks of life. For instance, the Tribe of the Five Hills frequently engages in tribal warfare with both the Clan of the Seven Stones and the Tribe of the Clouded Valley, but these are matters of ritual and not of conquest.Alongside the primacy of the belief in the life force and the Unformed Land, the second most sacred belief of the tribes is their philosophy of self-sacrifice and non-individuality, of suppressing one's self-interest for the good of the tribe. This idea, so foreign to our culture, struck me as something I wished to delve into much more deeply. Unfortunately, there was intense social upheaval among the tribes due to an incident involving their most current war (inasmuch as I could discern in the ensuing bedlam), and the charged atmosphere warranted my quick departure before I could ask anything further of my hosts."
So you get the feeling that some dirty play in the ceremonial war took place giving the notion that the Witch Doctors are also becoming much more violent.
When Deckard Cain returns to the ruins of Tristram's Cathedral seeking clues to new stirrings of evil, a comet from the heavens strikes the very ground where Diablo once entered the world. The comet carries a dark omen in its fiery being and it calls the heroes of Sanctuary to defend the mortal world against the rising powers of the Burning Hells – and even the failing luminaries of the High Heavens itself.
In the Front Screen it shows a demon poised to attack, but the Angel is hunched over on his blade.
That gives me the feeling that one Angel has failed to do or stop something and has been cast out for it. This Angel although should be viewed as a pacifist in the whole of the war.
When speaking of Caldeum the author also mentions that the Zakarum are back (the preists and zealots in the Bazaar of DII, and also the Paladin Class)
and are feuding with Mages. Do you suppose that this means the Paladin and the Mage class are shoe-ins?
"The chanting stilled as the leader, face shadowed by a heavily gilded hood, stepped forward and began to intone a ritual in some indecipherable tongue. A large, thickly muscled and leather-masked cultist draped a black, eyeless hood over the victim's head before pulling a foot-long spike from his sash. My mind searched for any possible use for this cursed nail when I noticed the immense stygian hammer grasped in his other hand. With one swift motion, he raised it above his head and drove the spike into the supplicant's back with fierce intensity. I almost screamed... but the victim made no sound."
The Previous passage is regarding the Cultists. In the Concept art there is a really twisted looking could-be cultist with a spike labeled Diablo's Tooth sticking out of his back. It would have not caught my attention except for that when you beat Lilith in Diablo II LOD 1.11 you receive an Easter Egg Item called Diablo's Horn. Combined with the hate of Necromancers in this Sequel I would be willing to bet that a Necromancer of some untold power will gather the remains of Diablo and return the Demon as an Undead Diablo. After all they can't call it Diablo without Diablo and the Reanimated Corpse of Diablo doesnt contain the actual being Diablo so it gives them an out to the whole "but his soulstone was destroyed!" thing.
Perhaps this Necromancer is the returned soul of Nihlathack serving a higher demon. Or perhaps this Necromancer is the She-spider who somewhat resembles Baal in the concept art section.
That is all the speculation I have for now. Please add or dispute any of this, it might keep my mind off of the anticipation of the game!
