Getting a Blizzard employee drunk… he talked! :coffee:
Okay well long story short… I visited a friend in California for a weekend. He made a friend a while back who works for Blizzard. (For obvious reasons we will not be including any names.) Well the three of us went out for wings that night. However this story does have to do with D3 not just future games. So I’ll post it here. After wing night, we went home started having a few drinks. We began with a bit of guitar hero. Colored notes started flashing by, and so did the drinks. ;) Well we weren’t really trying to pry too much because he is kind of our friend… I guess, or his friend at least. He was a little vague on a few parts so I’ll leave them out. The main things we did get out of him are: “Yes the World of Diablo was already decided on.” As most of you have already guessed. Now we tell why this is posted here. “Diablo 3 is actually more of the “harbinger” as Diablo put it, of World of Diablo.” Apparently as we talked about the game for a little bit. Diablo 3 is going to be a “platform” type of game so to speak, to build upon the Diablo storyboard. Most likely we will be seeing, factions, creation of factions, new cities, and towns. Supposedly the revelation of the character classes we will see in the new mmorpg or as I’m getting to strategy. The vague part as I put it was actually Blizzard apparently discussing the possible creation of a Diablo strategy game. However rather then make Diablo into a strategy game. Blizzard most likely will just shove the whole “LOTR” sized storyboard into Diablo 3. That part has not yet been decided. Over all that’s really as much as we were able to get out of him so. So I’m not going to start to try and make things up. That’s simply all we got. :coffee:
so diablo 3 is going to lead into a MMO World of Diablo is what your saying?

Yes that sums it up.
Sorry but this "story" is about as believable as the guy down on 42nd street who has a bridge to sell me.

Well I'll say this much if you all don't believe it close it for the time being, but leave it around. When you actually get to play Diablo 3 and beat the game.. well not beat it but beat Diablo and friends. Then I can laugh and say "haha i told you so."
please tell me it is really going to be called "Diablo and Friends" hahaha
What if Blizzard games are really moving towards that direction and maybe in 10 years or so we have a "World of Blizzard" that tells us the story of how dinosaurs dissapeared, which of course explains how "Hell is frozen over" but is a prequal to actual civilization now a days...or a prequal to the SIMS really...who knows...
Sorry but this "story" is about as believable as the guy down on 42nd street who has a bridge to sell me.
I've got some beach-front property in Arizona if you're interested!
In the interviews coming out of WWI and in the discussions with the producers you do get a very common theme regarding the story and the characters along with their world. Their focus seems to be much more story driven which in turn reinforces the idea of setting up the stage for a MMO.
I'd have no problem with that, I'd love WOD.

It seems like a likely decision. As long as the story line actually continues in an enjoyable way... (unlike WoW- go kill 3 bunny rabbits, collect 4 tusks from happy boars, collect 1 hoof from the unicorn of enternal smiles).

Dude, I SO see World of Diablo coming. I was pretty certain it would, but friends always said that they already have WoW and WoW was too much like Diablo.
I'm inclined to agree. We don't really need yet another WoW that tries to come off as super dark and evil. Hell, they're already doing that with D3.

I agree. Actually, before D3 was announced, I hoped for a new IP. a Sci-Fi MMORPG. :D
I find this very believable because it seems to follow a preset trend with Blizzard games. Think back to Warcraft III...that game served as a means to create alliances, factions, characters, and stories for Blizzard's next game - World of Warcraft which happens to be an mmorpg.
It makes sense for Blizzard to do the same thing once again especially considering how successful WoW has been. By the time we get to see World of Diablo, WoW will be on the decline and WoD will be the new money maker for our homies at Blizzard.
Id probably try a WoD or WoStarcraft...as long as they made them different enough from WoW since they would be entering the same genre
People, don't be so naive. I am sorry to say this, and sorry if this offends the OP. But for years people come in with these "stories" of "I have a friend..." or "I met a Blizzard employee...".
Well to date 99.9% of them have been pure BS. Just about a year or so ago here at this site someone had the big huge inside information that said Diablo 3 was going to be like WOW. Well, have we all seen the video? Does anyone think this is WOW?
Sorry OP, but I find these posts rather annoying as we get tons of these all the time everywhere

believable as in the part that the OP has 12 posts and 6 of them is in this thread?
I happen to have a friend that has a friend that has a friend that knows someone that is the friend of one of the guy that works next to the building that can see the headquarter of Blizzard. According to him, (which I got him drunk at 2 A.M.) Diablo 3 is going to be a turn-based game featuring bunnies and leprechauns.

That's exactly what I heard from my uncle's friend who is working on D3 too (who I got drunk last night as well)! Since there are two of use who've heard the same thing I guess it's pretty much confirmed.
Whether or not the actual story is true, I really do think Blizzard is going to attempt to set up a story to build a future MMO on. Before D3 was announced, I didn't think it would be an MMO because I didn't think there was a deep enough story to make one. However, they may expand stories and create unexplored branches (mentions of a major character, for example) that will be further expanded upon in an MMO.
Don't be shocked to see brief mentions of characters you don't interact with in depth, bosses you don't fight, regions you don't explore, plotlines you don't pursue, and cliffhangers.
I'd be shocked if Diablo 4 wasn't an MMO. Figure 8 years from D2 -> D3 (I'm in the camp that thinks it's coming sooner rather than later), and 5 or so from D3 to World of Diablo. That would put is in 2014 - WoW will probably have seen it's 4th expansion and will probably be in decline. Perfect time for a brand new Blizzard MMO.
Three games worth of backstory (D1 -> D3 would be rehashed in the initial release). Expansions would follow unexplored plotlines/leads/characters/new plotlines.

You would be foolish not to think there is going to be a Diablo MMORPG at some point in time.
I remember when "Starcraft 2" will never happen.
World of Warcraft can not and will not last forever, infact it has already lost sever subscribers (yes I know they are replaced with new ones). I played WOW for about 4 months, it just wasn't HARDCORE enough for me.
Now a Rated M Diablo MMORPG with a Hardcore Sever, now thats a game I'd play for a long time to come.

im not sayin that it is true man...im just saying that the scenario that the op played out (blizzard using D3 as a jump board into a diablo mmo) does not sound that far fetched. i mean, they have already done it with the warcraft universe. i personally hope it is true because the more diablo we get the better, but we shall see. only the future and blizzard employees know.
Blizzard has said they are going to have a big focus on the story this time around. Not saying I believe a word the OP said, because I don't. But the general idea, yeah I could see it happening.

Nobody from blizzard would ever violate the NDA, stop being so obvious.
Breaking news!! I got bill gates drunk last night and convinced him to turn over microsoft to me! It's for sale. Gonna put it up on ebay!
We're over a year away from d3 and this random blizz guy is telling you about a game that (if true) wouldn't exist for another ten years or so?
If it were that easy we would've known about d3 a looooong time ago.
yeah, okay.

last night, I met this really hot girl who works for blizzard. I got her drunk and she confirmed that D3 will be about bunnies and leprechauns. I also screwed her three ways into next week.
Just about the same amount of credibility as the OP really...as much as I think it is quite possible that a Diablo MMORPG will follow at some point, this story just sounds too fabricated to me.

There is some rust on my car that I'd like to sell you. Interested?
As for the OP, of course it can be true that Blizzard decided what setting their next MMO will be in. They should have decided quite some time ago already. And their choices are Warcraft, Starcraft, Diablo, or something new. I really doubt they would choose for something new when they have 3 succesfull settings going already, so a 33% chance for it to be Diablo.
If it is true that they got this information by getting an employee drunk is a bit of a cliché of course. Difficult to take that seriously.

What is so amusing? Development on Diablo3 started as early as 2000, that is 8 years ago. Sure it was all thrown away, but started again in 2004.
It would be amusing if someone thought that Blizzard does not have a team working on their next MMO for some time already. If that is based on Diablo remains to be seen.

I'm sure if someone would say Diablo 5 was in the making, someone would say "I believe it".

Blah...True or not I'm kinda down on MMO's lately. WoW is awesome fun but sometimes you just want to play a game without your guild mates making lame *** jokes every 10 minutes, not to mention the raids and various grindathons that require you to be eligible for end game content. =/

The good ole 3-4 degrees of separation insider story. Always a classic. Honestly, tho, I hope Morphinia makes an "I told you so" post, or someone bookmarks this until the story breaks, because it would be interesting for this to be more than smoke out of an arse for once.
Anyway, given that we know there's gonna be an MMO, and that Diablo and Starcraft have some material with which to work with (as opposed to making something from scratch), I also think the MMO would be one or the other. But I think the extensive storyline treatment Blizz is giving to the SC Trilogy + the fact that an SC MMO would differ more from WoW than a Diablo MMO (there would be differences ofc, but we could have space battles and galatic ships in the SC one; the Blizz employee emphasized that it would be different). Either way, I'll be able to choose from this, the Carbine Studios MMO, the Star Wars: The Old Republic MMO, or the World of Darkness MMO. Now if I can find the time...
No MMOs, please
More Ovaltine, though
I think they're going for something new, actually. Should be interesting. Sadly, we won't see until WWI in 2010

1. Blizzard is confirmed to be working on a new MMO.
2. It is confirmed this new MMO is in no way related to Starcraft, Warcraft, or Diablo.

id believe a starcraft mmo over diablo just for the fact that diablo is too much like warcraft.
and the SC mmo could be a strictly player vs player game. with the 3 factions of zerg terran and protoss attacking eachother for control of say a planet (each realm different planets and ****)
more of just a pvp game than a level grind game for items and crap.
just spitballing.

Their focus seems to be much more story driven which in turn reinforces the idea of setting up the stage for a MMO.
Don't follow your logic here -- traditionally, single-player games are much more story-driven than multiplayer ones, since you don't have those pesky other people messing up your personal narrative.
The first two Diablos were the exception, not the rule. Even the various "Diablo clones" had more story than D1 or D2 did.

the new mmo wont be diablo or starcraft, it's an all new ip
anyway your story is BS and i like it keep it coming !
And your post is BS too. Blizzard hasnt said one way or another. Wether this guys story is true (unlikely), yours is just the same thing SPECULATION. No one knows anything unless you work for blizzard. They havent said it is a new IP and they havent said its an old IP. The only thing they have said is it isnt WoW 2
I'm pretty sure they said it was something new. News posts keep referring to it as "new property".
It's much more interesting to imagine Blizzard making something new. What could it be? I theorize that it definitely won't be a contemporary or Earth setting. Maybe... something with Mecha? Something with Monsters? I would love to see Blizzard take one of those usually Japanese settings and make them more american. Less Bull****, more grit.
The next gen MMO as they call it will not be released before 2012.
By 2012 WoW will begin to fade and problem is they want to continue dominating MMO scene, so WoW2 is possible but more likely it will be complete new franchise or World of Starcraft. They said in late 2007 in one interview "We are not working on Diablo3" and then a year later they announced it, so I guess you can never know before the announcement. WoW2 is the option as well. But maybe they want to be first to develop AAA MMO-RTS. No one said this next gen MMO will be an RPG. On their website you can see only "Next Gen MMO" so people can only guess about it.

Apparently WoW was potentially going to be world of Diablo. Look at that big pit in the searing something or other. Very indicative of something yes?
It looks like World of Diablo now except there's not as many demons as you'd expect.
But, Man, they need to learn to do EVIL pretty damned fast in a 3d environment. Who would have taken World of Diablo seriously in the WoW engine and art style?
All that said, I fully and utterly expect Diablo to be their next MMO.
Starcraft wouldn't make any sense to me. Would it be doable? Probably? Would it fit as easily and be just made for the medium? Not in my opinion.
The undead starting area in WoW is excellent. If they can go 10 times darker for most of the game, and 50 times darker for the boss areas, they are in business.
I would be SHOCKED if Blizzard did an all new IPO for their new mmo. That's not how they work. They develop something that has fan support in a regular game before driving the legions into full frenzy. Anything is possible, but they are just too careful for me to believe that. Even Blizzard fanboys would be thrown by that.

Hmmm... "World of Sanctuary" wouldn't be new property, would it? :whistling:
They've already said in an interview (don't ask me for the link. Haven't bookmarked it...) that D3 would be the last part of the trilogy, but not the last game in the world of Diablo. So Blizzard has already planned for more...
They wouldn't release two Diablo games at the same time. New property, definitely.

hmm i dont think this is entirely impossible at all. class diversity with Diablo Universe is more diverse than starcraft, but the main problem here are the skills. WoW and D2 and D3 are already sharing skills, what then would be the huge difference between WoW and WoD? I'd rather prefer a new IP for the next gen MMO, please Blizzard dont ruin my experience on your current IPs!!

If this were 100% true, blizzard wouldn't exist. It wouldn't surprise me in the least if Blizzard developed an entirely new game and storyline. Starcraft, Warcraft and Diablo are huge, but i'm sure those guys get bored rehashing the same ideas. Blizzard became famous because they created two totally unique game genres (three if you wanna consider sci-fi and fantasy RTS different) and it wouldn't surprise me at all if the tried to do it again.
If you believe this guy, I've got some wonderful oceanfront property for sale here in Wisconsin.
this story is bull**** and u all know it... and what the story tells us isnt new... j. wilson already said that a diablo mmo in the future isnt unlikely and if we have a look at how much time is left between now and when the sun is going to burn our solar system i think that somewhen in this sHoRt time period (around 2020 is my guess) blizzard is going to make that game...
and i really dont think its the "unanounced game" they are indirectly talking about, cause they already have a diablo game in the making... and since the next gen mmo is not going to be of any known franchise i think that game is also of a new franchise or its warcraft4^^ (cause there is already a starcraft game in the making too xD)

Not saying you are wrong here but Jay Wilson is not going to spill any beans here so yeah, he is going to tell you something you don't want to here like the rest of Blizzard would just to keep things hush hush for now.
The fact of the matter is that they have 2 games unannounced..
1. Next Gen mmo which really could be anything. Anything is possible here even the possibility of a World of Sanctuary. Blizzard even stated that their new mmo will be very different from WOW.
2. New Game which we all know it is going to be a new IP.
