Seeing these, I'm not worried at all concerning Diablo III. Blizzard games are known for looking nothing like the final product in the very early stages.

Good one dude.

I hope people will stop making complain threads. Pretty annoying.

Even at first glimpse, D3 already looks fantastic.Imagine the end product :jig:

That's because no-one was complaining about the graphics in-game.
It was like, godly at that time compared to most of the other games and Diablo.

Well, the actual game graphics looks pretty much like the finished product. But I actually liked the D3 preview videos -- I like the style, the effects, the animations. So I'm not worried either way. :)

Uh I joined a diablo 2 clan over a year before the game was released. Diablo 2 didn't even look that much better than diablo1 in the screenshots and i literally counted down the days until release for 6 months. The new screenshots/video of diablo 3 looks incredible to me, but hopefully this eases the naysayers somewhat.

Seeing this new game literally made me nearly piss my pants (read more below), it also had the effect of making me finally join this forum.

I've continuously been checking diabloii.net since v1.10 of diablo2 was released looking for any information on diablo3. I had come to the conclusion that it would never come to pass (due to rumours) and haven't visited diabloii.net for about a month. When i came here today and saw all the diablo3 stuff I thought it was an april fools joke or like july1st joke. When i watched the trailer my excitement was incredible.

I'm a 22 year old man who won't be able to sleep for a month because of how excited i am for this upcoming title.

BTW anyone want to form a clan??? It's tradition to join a clan before a diablo game is released :D.

raveharu
01-07-2008, 04:07
Clans?

I'm pretty sure the guild system would be integrated into D3.
It's time we change the word "clan" to Guild.

01-07-2008, 04:12
fine we can call it a guild all you want. But I've always hated the word 'guild'. Besides the further this game can stay away from WoW the better. 'Clan' always felt more appropriate to me in the Diablo universe.

My point is stop whining (naysaying community) and start cracking open some beers, we've got a year of time to pass (give or take) before this game is released and the only way I'm going to survive a wait that long is completely hammered.

BattleWhack
01-07-2008, 04:17
Jesus, you're right.... I need to start looking for a clan.

EDIT: Clan, Guild, whatever, it's the same ****. I mean hell, in Eve Online (the only other game I'm addicted to) they're called "Corporations".

thats sad when you think about it. i myself am 29 and just like d2 i am already obsessed with this game. it bothers me cause i remember how bad it was pre d2. i mean i loved alot of it and the people i met but the pain of not playing the game and how it seemed to take forever to finally launch just killed me, not sure how i can handle being crazed over this game for another 2 years

Those pics are pretty cool. Thanks for posting them. Having played classic D2 I can see where it all started from.

Someday we'll be talking about classic D3. Imagine how many changes there are going to be between the release date and an expansion. Imagine how many changes there will be between now and release. I am not worried, except there had better be a bow wielding class.

Lol I went out a bought D2 because of the rumors of D3, then it was announced and I'm still only level 40 since I can't stop re-reading and looking at the pictures of D3 over and over. I would like content patches though for D3. After doing the same **** over and over again in D2 it gets boring and fast.

It's actually funny how D2 suddenly starts to sell really well again -- I noticed it in my vendor's sales charts. :) I re-installed it the other day, too (had my SP chars backuped up). Didn't need to buy it, still had my two sets (second one was a backup if I ever lost my first set -- yeah, pretty addicted for some time!).

Here's (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ol4HAS9EoaE) some footage back from 1998.

Heh, they even considered casting multiple golems at once.

Starcraft in pre-alpha looked very similar in design to warcraft II. Then they bashed it apart until it looked completely different... I remember. It was quite a drastic change (http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/3/3f/Alpha_build_(StarCraft).png).

Those old screen shots and videos are amazing. Imagine the dev team having conversations about that stuff - Guy1:"You know, Jeff, those + signs on the character screen look really stupid, can you make em look cooler." Guy2: "Well, I think YOU look stupid! Fine, you don't like em? I'll make em REAL pretty for ya!"

Even better - Guy2: "Eye of Zeus? This isn't a ****ing Greek mythology game, we don't have gods, we have Angels and Devils! Get with the program!" Guy1: "Oh sure, reinvent the wheel, come up with our own lore, great idea!"

I was never anything but excited for Diablo III. People have almost lost their faith in Blizzard, but I haven't; maybe briefly with StarCraft II. Blizzard knows what they are doing and they are going to make a really damn good game, regardless of how similar or different it is from the rest of the Diablos. I still like the gothic art design though.

Beta is not 'very early'. Beta is the 'polish and tweak' phase of game development. By Beta, the core mechanics and interface are usually set in stone. What we saw was not beta. What we saw was Alpha at best.

thats not the point. The point is that there were drastic changes in the early stages of D2 to where it is today. Same will happen to D3

I love how Ice Mastery is a selected spell in that one screenshot.

Anyway, I still think it's pointless to belittle D3 when it's so early in development. All games are usually drastically different from their final incarnation, and this one will most likely not be different in the least bit.

Hehe lol at the 1998 youtube video!! :) Totally d1 interface, barb "kick skill", lightning effect, all the characters walking around.

But still, the difference between 1.00 and 1.12 LoD is HUGE. They are different games. I just played 1.00 with my friends and we finished normal. It was really funny. There were many bugs and the skills were balanced poorly.

So based on how much Diablo 2 changed from pre-alpha to release and the again to release to expansion and then again from expansion to current state, we shouldn't be too worried about D3 right now, because it looks great!!

Now that I think of it, D2 looks pretty awful :) but the gameplay was ace of course.

I'm glad they move forward with the graphics and engine and don't just stay with same old just because it pleased so many back then.

How did you play 1.00? Is there a place to download it? I would LOVE to play an early version of LoD.

aSimpleFear
01-07-2008, 19:23
1.00 is Diablo ii unpatched and non-LoD.
1.10 is LoD expansion.

You can play 1.00 on private servers or what have you. 1.00 was TONNES of fun, there were some uber builds that unfortunately were too powerful in pvp. As well the game moved much more slowly, getting to level 40 didn't take 2 hours like it does now. It was months and months before someone hit level 99 in 1.00.

Mivo
01-07-2008, 23:26
1.10 wasn't LOD. That was a free content patch that introduced immunities and random mob types in Act 5. LOD came years before that.

THEN THEY BASHED IT APART.

Indeed, Blizzard's history of releasing something and having it torn apart until they improve it goes a long way back.

Something else interesting: the Diablo 1 beta had two spells, Heal and Blood Rituals (which exchanged some life for a lot of mana). Alternate the two and you could ignore all those pesky healing potions. Also, a bunch of skills had reduced mana cost at higher levels, all the way down to zero. This included main offensive spells. Whoops. It also had two forms of temporary invulnerability (Etherealise and Invisibility) with no recast timer.

What one have to recognise, is that Diablo I was just about the first game where people kept on playing it even though they had beat it. Before that a thing as free offensive spells really didnt matter much because you weere supposed to be cool and beat the endboss and then the game was over.

The whole "balance" thing pretty much started with Diablo I and peopling who kept on playing it.

And for the record, they never intended on the alpha version of SC being the final version in terms of looks. They were in a rush to show something to the gaming media and I think it was E3 where they announced it forever ago. They even stated that those were just placeholder graphics.
