Easiest way I learned conversational Cantonese was learning basic words from friends and watching Cantonese movies and listening to music. I dunno, IMHO it is a really hard language to learn but I think you should be fine just being able to understanding it as well.

English has always been pretty natural to me (as it is for a lot of danes) but here I use primarily German and when I then have to shift to English it is quite easy to mess up :)

japanese actually has 3 forms of written language. one uses the english letters to imitate sounds, one is syllables and the other one is picturewords.

the big thing with japanese is its a very structured language. getting even one word/syllable in the wrong place can completely change the meaning of the sentence. which can be bad.

its hard from an english native standpoint as english is a very fluent flowing language where structure is not important

Finnish, English and Swedish for me. Not the most useful collection of languages when thinking it world-wide. The worst part is really that my native language Finnish doesn't resemble in the slightiest pretty much any other language than Estonian in the whole world so I can't have any educated guesses on meanings of other languages by comparing to mine. Always need to do that via English or Swedish (which I'm not that good in anyway).

I was talking about your japanese. I would love to know an Asian language though. I think it's pretty cool. And it's supposed to be useful if your into international trading and stuff which is what I've been studying so far. Thinking of starting on math or journalism once I return to Denmark though.

Edit: Denmark has of course got Norwegian and Swedish which is very similar. But German actually isn't that far from Danish. And I find it pretty easy to guess the meaning of short phrases of other european language such as Spanish or Italian. I've always been kind of fascinated how so many languages are very much a like even though they are completely different.

I don't think it's so strange at all with languages spoken in same or neighboring areas having similarities. Language is after all just a means to communicate better and it will adjust according to needs. People borrow words from other languages and start using them within their own language with possibly some modification to fit their mouth better, but the borrowing base is still there. In Europe most languages belong to couple of families with heavy similarities with words and grammar. Couple that with the borders changing relatively often and it's quite natural the languages will be affected by each other. Like you mentioned Danish being similar to Swedish, Norwegian and German, it's no wonder since they're all Germanic languages, as is English.
