To answer your question: I blame it on the glaring dark side of capitalism: greed. Specifically, the making the most money with the least amount of effort while appearing to give a damn about that which one is ripping off or destroying.

This is the main reason Kevin Smith still works in Holywood. Although I can't complain, I love his movies :D

Cool, an OT thread :scratchchin:, anyone looking forward to Assassin's Creed II? I know I am, as long as it isn't as repetitive as the original.

The Game Informer preview looked promising, but I'm never gonna pay $60 for a game... again (after the Fable 2 debacle).

Haha, nice reference MM. After I bought Mount&blade and The Last Remnant (both of which scored a dubious 6.5 at gamespot) and played them for months before losing some of their appeal, I couldn't help but notice why game reviews are so skewed. I've been enlightened, it's not really their fault (although some are biased) but it's their schedule and lack of staff. So many games come out that it's impossible to get the big picture without rushing through, and truly epic games have epic content. Epic content requires an epic amount of time... that most don't have to spend on a dozen games.

Please, reply and tell me what you think (only if you read my whole comment!)

Edit: BTW, what was the "Fable II" Debacle?

I see what you mean. Game reviews are kind of like "the pirate code" from Pirates of the Carribean. "Well, they're more like guidelines...."

As far as Fable II is concerned, apparently a good portion of the people who bought the game within about 5 months (a rough estimate by a Lionhead Rep was 10-15%:banghead:) had compatibility problems with the game itself, mostly manifesting in freezing and locking-up in-game OR in my case before I could even start the game. There were multiple yet temporary tactics to combat this (not using any DLC, clearing cashe, reformatting hard drive if it came down to it) but nothing that could be called a decent fix.

If it weren't just Fable II, I'd know it would be a hardware problem, but everythign else runs fine.

After running through 3 copies of the game and sending the system, the external hard drive, and the game itself to XBox support with no success, I had a $250 coaster until about 2 weeks ago, when I bought a few more games.

I've been enlightened, it's not really their fault (although some are biased) but it's their schedule and lack of staff.

That is part of the problem. And it is mostly the problem with indy games. Those need some time investment before you understand the intricacies and they become really fun and addicting.

The biggest problem is that fact that the industry thrives on the advertising dollars of the game companies. If they give a bad review to a game being hyped by a publisher then that publisher will be disinclined to spend more advertising dollars. So to appease their caretakers they don't mention obvious faults and rank all games highly.

True so very very true. Hey how about some old fashioned D&D? diablo III style.

The dark bricks of tristram cathedral glisten with the blood of adventurers young and old as you carry yourself into its pool chamber, torch in hand. You see air bubbles popping in the water and a pebble scatters in your peripheral vision. You sense an ambush, what do you do? (you are a witch doctor, respecting the forum)

It seems that the new DIII community forums are missing the one thing that makes dii.net so inviting; Off Topic Threads. So put on your voodoo mask , grab a cold one, and raise some OT, or zombie walls, or both.

Keep in mind forum rules (http://forums.diabloii.net/faq.php?faq=rules) still apply, so keep the foul language, flaming, and mindless spam out (I can read all I want about how people are getting uppity about the possible lack of necromancers in DIII in the rest of this particular fourm).

Not my problem, you stalled yourself and died. Anyway, what's wrong with throwing fire at normal water? It evaporates into super heated steam which kills you.

Death by steam is pretty horrible. Either you lungs burn thus choking you, or your skin gets damaged to the point of shock and you die because of that. Really ****ing cruel.

Who cares? Also, people thought Necromancers had an image problem?

Oh yeah, back in 1.09 and patches before that. Most skills were pretty useless except the IM + BG combo. Necro's were just curse *****es to a party and people generally didn't want to play them.

Do you think will see a change in the WD appearance in Blizzcon?

The appearance of the WD probably won't change. Blizz seems intend on keeping his WC Troll-like appearance and their love of green and purple isn't likely to go away. For some reason the appearance of the WD has been bombarded by the community as proof of the fact that the classes in D3 can be original and fresh. All in all the male WD will keep looking ridiculous with his Parkinson hunchback, while the female WD will remain a sexy female because lord knows that females in games can't be ugly.

Truth be told I don't think we'll be hearing about the WD AT ALL during Blizzcon. They have the possibility of introducing two new classes. Two classes that will generate a large buzz regardless of how they turn out. The WD is pretty old news at this point in time. A lot of people don't even care about him. If Blizz were to reveal more skills for him and actually flesh the character out they would only appeal to those few WD fans. It just makes more sense for them to concentrate on the new classes.

If they do release more skills for the WD or change his appearance he is going to have the same problems as with his introduction. he was released next to the Barb who got most of the attention. If they release more info now all his thunder will be stolen by the new classes.

You really should make a new thread on this. I'd be interested to see what the other posters think about this.

LaZeR
28-06-2009, 15:56
Maybe I should, but I think you just answered the whole thread here (:

However, I must disagree:
1. You belive Blizz will introduce 2 new chars? That's the most optimistic thing I've ever heard. May I ask why? (I strongly think it will be only 1)
2. With only like 10 skills at his arsenal the WD has to have SOME news, especialy comparing to the Barb and Wiz. Maybe he has small fan-base now, but if they release some new epic skills everyone will start to see how cool the WD really is (what basically happened with the Wizard).
3. Huh, I think you're more the correct. The WD will be thunder stolen by the new char. This is a problem. However, if they make the new WD REALLY cool and epic maybe both chars can co-exist. I mean, the Barb didn't steal the WD's thunder because he was cool, but probably because the WD was very not cool..

lunarleif
28-06-2009, 17:58
Death by steam is horrible. It rips off your skin, flesh, and maybe even bone. *rips could be dissolves. Alright, this is not a discussion about skin flesh ripping. I think that they should do whatever. Considering that Blizzard releases information so slowly, any information is good information :P

Mad Mantis
29-06-2009, 16:56
1. You belive Blizz will introduce 2 new chars? That's the most optimistic thing I've ever heard. May I ask why? (I strongly think it will be only 1)

Actually my guess is that they will only release one. They need another bombshell to drop sometime. Either during the next Blizzcon or during the promotion phase for the games release. A single new char at this Blizzcon is enough to keep people buzzing for a few more weeks.

what basically happened with the Wizard

The Wiz had her own little introduction party and didn't have to share. Plus she is an easily identified icon.

However, if they make the new WD REALLY cool and epic maybe both chars can co-exist. I mean, the Barb didn't steal the WD's thunder because he was cool, but probably because the WD was very not cool..

The problem is that the WD is "old" while the introduced char is completely "new". No matter how cool they make the "old" the "new" will always attract more attention.

I might be too pessimistic at the moment, but I don't believe that the WD will get the image he deserves.

Alright, this is not a discussion about skin flesh ripping.

And why not? It is Diablo-like, Necro-like and WD-like. If there ever was a thread about skin flesh ripping, this would be it.

At first, I thought it was a naked wizard, but then I noticed that she was holding a Skull of Flame. But her skin is white, isn't it? Does that mean we can customize our characters?

Edit: It has probably already been noted. Maybe it has something to do with the light that makes her skin appear white?

Right. I didn't think it deserved it's own topic since it's not a big thing and I thought this was a "general discussion about the Witch Doctor" thread. I guess not. And if that's clothes, what is he wearing? A white skin coloured tight jumpsuit and a bra? Seems a little odd.

Cxplorer - at the risk of prying, in a mature, academic sense I have been aching for a valid socio-geographic response. So, I do hope you will be candid with the following question.

I've made no attempt to hide my opinion that the WD is derivative, romanticized on British African Imperialism, and at the very least a mildly offensive character. As I am Irish in heritage, the converse stereotypical equivalent to me would be a beer-swilling, Gaelic-cursing, kilt-wearing oaf, who's skills include chucking empty beer flasks instead of frogs.

Do you find the WD a bit close to the cheap knock-off of a bad image, or just iconized fun?

Of course, I love to make fun of myself, so the aforementioned character idea sounds hilarious, but again, D3 is a fantasy game - fantasy characters should have elements of references, not be near duplicates.

The press wouldn't focus on the important things anyway. Those things are boring. If it doesn't make for a good story then it won't get published. People want to read about drama, they want to feel outrage at an unfair law and they want to feel good when the little guy strikes a blow against the government. Newspapers are aimed at the same public that watches all those talent shows.

The Somnambulist

Unfortunately, you are right. In some ways, it doesn't help that there is a self selecting audience to news outlets. With how many places news is reported (for some places i stretch the definitions of 'news' and 'report') people will mostly find what interests them most. We all do this. Take me for example, I have probably read less than 10 articles on the economy over the last six months. However, I have read more than I can remember on things like the middle east, energy, sustainability, technology, space, .... conclude what you want about the media, audiences, or me.

That's probably one of the reasons why news and "news" agencies have developed the way they have. Fear of people running away if they don't change their style of broadcasting.

Yep I totally agree with you, it is very hard to get a factual report about something.

Most of the time getting a factual report means that you will have to do your own research. And that is assuming that you even know there is something to research. It's funny that even with the enormous amount of information available to us via the internet it hasn't become any easier to find the facts.

Your right, you would think that more information would be better, but its just not. You used to be able to trust most of the information out there, because most of the sources were reliable. Now we just have a massive flood of information on everything, so you have to carefully wade through the mass of bad info out there, and make sure that you are getting it from as close to the source as possible.

Please create a OT thread in the newcomer forum, we are running out of threads to post in.

There are already quite a few D3 boards and more will be made when the game actually launches. This has lead to a small shortage of mods. I know that Elly is already on the lookout for candidates. Having members recommended or volunteer speeds this process up.

If you want to recommend another member or yourself for the position of D3 mod you can just send her a PM. Just state that you'd like for her to consider the member or yourself for the position of D3 mod. If you want you can mention a specific area that you would like to moderate.

Leopold Stotch
14-07-2011, 19:56
some people haven't read the books. maybe that's why they said it.

iirc, i know who all dies and i know how it ends, but i grew up with these movies AND books so it's more than just another dumb movie for me. it's the end of it all, no more HPs being released for summer or thanksgiving holidays, seeing it on the big screen one last time... i mean, this is a big thing for a lot of people out there. it has such a huge fan base and while i know not everyone is or will ever become an HP fan, it's still a big thing and took this world by storm.

one thing i will be GLAAAAD as a mofo when it's over is the Twilight franchise. at least there were four books to that one but i have heard it's going to be two movies? how does that even work?! NOTHING HAPPENS IN THE FOURTH ONE!!! well, none of them really, but TWO movies for the last one? REALLY? it's going to be a bloody bore-fest!

Yes, they were all a bit sad compared to the first one. They got really unhappy that people were comparing the first one to Christianity, and completely overhauled the second one to not fit with Christianity, bringing in ideas from all kinds of other religions. The second one is the worst of the three. I did really like the third one still, but I know a lot of people really didn't get that into the last 2.

corax
15-07-2011, 11:29
it was similar to christianity? i don't follow. but i am not religious at all, so whatever.

aren't all religions basically identical with only cosmetic differences?

kestegs
15-07-2011, 11:41
Yea it was actually, its a pretty good comparison where Neo=Jesus. Here (http://webpages.charter.net/mark_turner/matrix/matrix_symbolism.htm) is a site about it.

I would not say at all that religions only have cosmetic differences. There are a lot of things that may feel the same, or look the same, but they are very different. They do usually share some very basic concepts, but not always.

corax
15-07-2011, 11:57
cheers for the link but to be honest it holds no interest to me. i may look tomorrow if i get bored.
I avoid religion in all its form and dislike it intensely. if people want it thats fine i don't care but too many are to pushy about it.
my fav example to tell to the random door knockers is this:

-My daughter is not christianed/baptism/whatever,
- According to some religions if she were to die right now she would wind up in purgatory
- I am not going to worship a 'guy' who is happy to banish innocent children to essentially a netherworld because of a parents choice. I want nothing to do with a jerk like that.
- It's like our PM turning away helpless boat people (the real helpless ones not the fake immigrant ones). Nobody is cool with it, yet most australians are cool with sending babies into the void?

disgusts me

kestegs
15-07-2011, 12:05
Yea, there are a lot of weird ideas and people out there. If I am bored I will have a conversation with the door knockers, they have some very odd beliefs, there religion is set up a lot like a pyramid scheme, its kinda sad.

Well, I don't believe babies or innocent children are going to hell, I could quote you where it says why, but if you don't believe the book in the first place it is a bit irrelevant. :whistling:

corax
15-07-2011, 12:11
i had to attend my brother in laws sons christianing/baptism. and the priest was quite plain. ANYONE not baptised is going to purgatory when they die. so not hell, just a vast nothingness forever.

I have never read the book, except for bits and pieces.

Not too mention said baptism was a horrible shame. mother was a divorcee, parents of said kid are not married, living together, and they are 2 different religions. ones catholic ones christian.
I'm sorry but if you are going to claim religion to get all the afterlife perks you should have to follow the rules during life. not just get sprinkled with water/oil and use it as a get out of jail free card.

i'm not. if my parents don't like something it's their problem.

my uncle is a surprisingly large control freak over my cousin. who is 21 this year (september i think). He's an apprentice canvasser and went out to dinner with the lads from his work on friday last week, so no work saturday, he had to be home by 9pm. And when my aunty an uncle go away camping he isn't allowed to stay home by himself he has to go into the city to stay with nan. it's really sad.

not going to get into an argument because people like what they do, but i think Rowling is not too bad of a writer. she made her characters come to life and is better than some other writers who don't do that at all.

they are different enough from the books that they aren't really comparable, which is how a book/movie translation should be. either identical or so drastically different it is just the soul of the book

18-07-2011, 11:31
I don't remember much about the third, what was it called? lost world 2 or Jurassic park 2? I know I saw it back then. I didn't know they were making a 4th one, I'm sure it will be so much easier and better looking this time. corax

jurassic park 3. there was silly bits in it. the spinosaurus using its 'hands' to snap the t-rex's neck. the raptors snapping the guys neck deliberately. just silly little details.

given the quality of the dinosaurs in king kong i have high hopes. just not sure how they are going to roll with it. going to try and not see any spoilers and get to the premier.

Yeah, I bet it will be pretty good, but will see. It will probably be in stupid 3D though! Just thought about that, grrrr I hate it when they make a sequel just so they can make it 3D! I may have to retract my previous statement if it is going to be in 3D.

Good call, 3D movies are pointless and stupid -.- oops, wrong thread!

Actually they aren't pointless, they're point is to make the movie companies more money, something that I think they have done very well at.

Why do you have to go outside to see 3D? Is the 3D inside your house broken?

corax
18-07-2011, 12:58
my house is actually in a parallel dimension. 4d is the standard here. i can see time slipping away as i sit on my couch

Very interesting! But 4D still includes 3D, so I feel your logic is flawed.

corax

thats like saying a 3d movie contains 2d so you can just watch 2d and pretend you can see into the 3rd.

kestegs
18-07-2011, 13:47
Nah, not at all. Every new dimension always also contains the previous dimensions as well, there's no need to pretend.

corax

i know it does. but the ability to see into the 4th dimension trumps the other 3.

The Somnambulist
18-07-2011, 15:41
I will not consider anything 3D if i have to put on silly glasses to trick my eyes. In my book it will only be 3D when people can wander in (unprepared) and see something in 3D.

Side note, time is a dimension as well as spatial ones.

kestegs
18-07-2011, 15:57
That is the 4th D, time. I guess maybe you didn't read that part, I believe it was mentioned some time ago.

3D movies are indeed a money making scheme.

i'm surprised he didn't go back in time to beat us to the punch. but then i realised that would prove his argument was a lie. which it clearly is. just like cake. thusly i would like to hypothesize.
timetravel = lie.
cake = lie

QED thus it is proved time travel = cake. this i believe is the true reason why people want to time travel, to get all the good cake

Was that Bear?

corax
19-07-2011, 13:57
nah bear would of attacked it, killed it then devoured its corpse.

reminds me of this joke.
During the arms race Russia and america realise they are just going to end up blowing the world up. so instead they make a bet, they will both have 5 years to create the most ferocious dog and whoever won the dog fight would become the worlds only super power.
So russia set to the task getting the worlds biggest rottweiler, the worlds most vicious pit bull and crossbreed them with siberian wolves. Every generation they add in some more gene tweaking and steroid enhancements to make the world's most vicious dog. the dog is so powerful its housed in a cage with bars 4 inches thick so it can't chew its way out.

5 years pass and both countries turn up with their dogs. The americans open their cage and a long daschund slowly ambles into the ring, giving the russians a good laugh. The russians then let less their killer dog. after circling for a moment the russian dog leaps to the attack whereupon the american dog extends its jaws and takes the russian dog down whole.

Afterwards the russians ask the americans how they did it. the american in charge of the project answers "you russians spent 5 years breeding a great fighting dog, we spent 5 years learning how to do plastic surgery on an alligator"

from memory. so overly long and terrible. but TLDR

My dog has taken to catching sparrows. He runs after them until he catches one. Like a scene from a cartoon. Then he just stands there with a live sparrow in his mouth. The little birds are a bit wet, but no worse for wear.

Leopold Stotch
20-07-2011, 19:45
Is this another one of those weird Australian sex things?

actually... yeah, it is! XD

Casey catches balls (the toy, not my cat) and bugs. she will watch birds and kinda stalk them, but they're too high on the fence for her to get. she's good at catching bugs, kinda chewing on them, and then leaving it on the ground or carpet. if a bug gets in the house, she'll leave it on the carpet.

and she's really good at destroying furniture, pillows, blankets, and shoes too. i have to get Mara a new pair of sandals because she chewed on the toe end of ONE shoe! the other one is fine, but his flip-flop is all chewed up at the end. -.-

i guess the good news is she knows when she has done wrong. my roommate caught her chewing on the shoe and she immediately ran for her cage. she's a smart dog... when she wants to be. she's napping right now. so cute! ^_^

but not cute when she wakes you up at 3:45 in the morning! ><

and she's so not alpha! she bows down to my cat! O.O my cat the resides outside!!

kestegs

If a bird can be reached he'll run after it and try to catch it. If it can't be reached he'll charge the location of the bird. Normally the sight of a dog running in their direction will scare the birds away. If that doesn't work he'll start barking. After scaring away the birds he'll prance about the garden like a show horse feeling all-powerful. Unfortunately for him the birds are only momentarily impressed by this display of canine power.

and she's really good at destroying furniture, pillows, blankets, and shoes too.

My previous dog only chewed on his basket when we were away. He did this as a puppy and grew out of it after a year or so. My current dog tried to chew on everything. I started throwing a shoe at him whenever he tried to eat a piece of furniture. After three shoes came sailing out of nowhere he thought it better not to demolish furniture.

Well played kegs!

Our (*erhm* ...my) dog gets the fierce end of my croc every now again, usually only when he's decided to revenge poop all over the place.

Doesn't matter if he just went earlier that morning and 5 minutes before we left, with no food since he woke up, he'll muster up some fecal matter and plop a beauty in the middle of the living room.

In the end, he's a good dog, he just deserves more space than we're currently living in.
