If you all go to the new D3 website and look through Cain's journal you'll see the symbols from the splash page written in blood on page 13. You can also see it in the d3 gallery here (http://www.diabloii.net/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=735).
Don't know their significance to Diablo 3 but they obviously aren't meant to represent Warcraft or Starcraft if they are appearing as part of Diablo lore.
