Well Barbarian is my favorite class in d2 so there is a possibility though I will be itching to try out the other classes as well and may try out a more unique one as my first. In the end I'll probably love the Barbarian the most once again.

Fighter was my first class in Diablo. Barbarian was my first class in Diablo 2.
Barbarian will more likely than not be my first char in Diablo 3:) I just love that class - although I'm a little disappointed with the fireworks/earthquake graphics and sound effects in the teaser - I would love to hear axes cleaving meat and see blood spurting instead, hehe.

Until now I allways started with a melee/fighter character but if as it seems so many people start with a barb and assuming bnet playing is similar to the current play. Probably the gear of that char will be the most expensive (high demand) so it will be a good idea to start with another one :) I also like the style of a ranger/amazon/druid.

I'm not, most likely. I never was a fan of Barbarian to begin with, though. I'll probably start with either a Paladin or a Sorc, depending on which is brought back, if either. If not, don't ask me.

A small clarification. In other RPG'ish games I always had hard time deciding what to roll and after rolling, the temptation to try something different soon after was strong. But in the end I find myself enjoying pure melee fighters the most, partly because of play style, partly because of lore.

So this time the decision for me to roll barb is set in stone. Period. It can be the worst class, the best class, the most overplayed class, the least played class. It can suck *** without good gear. The gear could be expensive as hell. I am sticking with barb no matter what. And as I've basically made the decision blind folded, as we know very little about game mechanics and whatnot, noone will be able to jump to generalizations like "bah you play the easiest class". I am taking my chances, that's all, now bring on the challenge!

1. Like people already said before, I think barbs are a good beginner class. Lot of health, and early game they deal more damage than casters, so they're good to get to know the gameplay, monsters, everything.
2. I already loved the barb in D2, and here (in the gameplay movie at least) he looks INSANE! Pure, raw power, impressive moves and he seems like a ton of fun! The Hulk, but without the cheesy oneliners! Count me in for sure!

The barbarian was my most often played character in d2, I fell in love with him the moment I first heard that stout yell at the campfire, sharpening his axe as if it was a butter knife.

Knowing only of the Barb and the Witch Doctor right now, I'm inclined to say "absolutely yes." Barbs were my staple characters in D2 and, thus far, I'm not disappointing at their D3 brethren. However, we still have 3 classes left to see and the way the current 2 unfold, and I have no doubts in Blizzard's ability to pleasantly surprise me so I can't give much of a future prediction about my first character.

I'll be leaning this direction. Melee is so much fun, and unless they have shifter Druids I'll enjoy playing a Barb the most, probably. Plus, if the balance is anything like D2, the Barbs will be among the best item-finders anyways, so I can gear my less-mainstream characters using my Barb. :p

I originally played a barb because I wanted to keep it simple, avoid spells and mana. I love melee characters anyway, but the only reason I ended up with the barb is because a friend decided to play the paladin first (there were four of us). That said, if the barb is the best melee character choice of the 5 DIII characters, I will play him first. If there is some sort of rogue/amazon/assassin/paladin/ranger/whatever, I would probably go for that.

The barb was my first character I played in D2 and definately my favorite. My favorite caster was the necro by far, which looks to have been replaced with witch doctor. Zombie wall ftw!

Considering the brutality of the attack animations and the splatter of blood they cause, I am sorely tempted to select a barbarian. However, I'm quite partial to the Wizard's play-style, so I'll still be going mage once DIII hits the shelves unless the other characters are more interesting.

I'll have to see what the other classes are first, but if there's no more interesting melee characters I'll go baba. I always prefer to be in the middle of fighting. Plus, barbarian is a classic strong melee fighter - it's the hardest to screw up a build of such type of a character, even before you learn more less how the game mechanics work and what seems useful. I tend to make poor first characters and now I don't have the time to waste 32798632596 hours on a character that is useless at higher levels.

On the other hand wall of zombies might be the main reason for starting as a witch doctor :)

Why? Because if the other Diablo games are any indication (and a lot of others), melee class damage is based largely on weapons. If your weapon stinks, your damage will be low. How well you perform will be determined by random drops. As anyone whos started a D2 account as a melee can tell you, starting with melees is hard for this reason. Even if you find a really good weapon or two, how long will they stay good before they need to be upgraded? 5-10 levels? You can quickly become non-viable if the right stuff doesn't drop.

Caster classes and summon/utility classes (wizard and witch doctor) will do more damage initially since they can just boost their skills in the skill tree for big gains, and what items they find initially will have little if any effect on their damage. That head start can make a significant difference. It's why lots of people start with MF sorcs.
