View Full Version : Most memoriable moments of D2...
How many of you want friday to be gone and saturday to be here right now?!!?!?! I sure as hell do. WTF is the NEW GAME!!!
Well i thought id post this for all us diablo 2, soon to be diablo 3 fans.
What was your most memoriable moment in diablo 2?
Mine was creating a level 9 assassin pk in hc with all the best charms and equipment possible. Seeing the reaction of level 30s+ that just got owned by a level 9 is just priceless!
I think my best moments were before LOD: there are a few
- Playing sorceress without cast delays.. omg those orbs flying
- Pvp with the old rules.. no leech and I think harder pvp damage 1/4
- Pretty much everything was more fun to play back then :)
- Most precious moments were the hardcore times before LOD when the hc community was very small and getting 80+level was a huge achievement and there was 10 or less characters over 90 level. My best was 78 lance baba before lod came.. I didn't concentrate on one character so it didnt gain much levels.

When LoD first came out, hireling levels were "pre-set." For example, Act 2 NM mercs would always be in the range of level 36-40, REGARDLESS OF YOUR CHARACTER LEVEL. The 1.09 patch a few days (weeks, maybe?) after LoD came out changed it so hireling level could not exceed your char lvl. If we had known how abusable this was, we would have made a ton of level 1s with hell barb mercs, but we only realized how insanely abusable this was many weeks after 1.09 when we noticed a good friend had a zon semi-rushed during 1.08 and had hired a NM barb merc. The char was level 1 but the merc was level 46. This was USEast Hardcore, so the only logical thing to do was level the char to 9 (we put her to 14, actually, for specific life gear that I can't recall), equip with the most life gear/charms as possible, and pimp the merc as much as possible (we ended up using socketed helm/armor/sword full of ED jewels). The end result? Join Hell cow games, hostile party, stand on edge of blood moor (in town), and watch as Merc would sometimes 1-hit kill people who had no idea what they were in for. "I'm level 14, duel me." became our mantra. I think the highest level ear we got was from a level 80 sorceress.
That, and being one of only two zons in the top 50 (and the highest by FAR) in the very early days of D2. Here's a screenshot of the USEast Hardcore Ladder the day my Zon died- late September 2000- this might bring back some memories:

Here's what I DIDN'T like in the old days:
"Act1 Go go go go go go go"
"tp
tp
tp
TP
TP!!
TP PLZ
TP PLZ!!!"
"2soj 4 silks"
"brg free soj"

The things I hated most about Diablo 2 were the ladder, trading, xxxx runs, and PvP.
So anything unrelated to those was generally a good memory. My fondest were of the times where I actually bothered to go through acts fully, from scratch, untweaked, with a few similarly inclined friends; it really brought a breath of fresh air to the game.
And even though I didn't use it much, hardcore was intense and memorable for much the same reasons as above.

Out of nowhere, after quitting playing "seriously" I started a new char (necro) and did my own build on the fly. I went HC on the spur of the moment and created a level-capped game "Act1 party" or something like that. Eventually 5 players joined and we played through the whole game on normal in the same party with no help from anyone else (or even from our own other chars). After that we made a game "act1 nm party" and did the same thing on nm just after a few baalruns.
The game was really great. You could actually get really nice loot going party - we shared everything so every class got good items on the way. And the xp was great also. I really don't know why people don't do this more often.. I always get pissed when a high level char comes to my act1 game and "ruins" it. It didn't even take that much longer, since you were playing the whole time and not searching for games/trying to leech etc.
It was so cool seeing how all the chars developed and shared the items. I really got excited finding bonesnap for our barb :) I frequently dream about it, but can't find the same kind of party anymore.
I've played the game through in LAN, but it isn't the same. That fragile setup could've ended any moment and that made it special. But I recommend it on LAN with 7 good friends also. It never gets old. Never. There's always the rush of starting a new char and getting that first magic, rare and unique item.
EDIT: Maybe diabloii.net could do a game which you had to signup up front. The idea being eight players going through the game on normal without any help. Call it "True Party". It should've been made in the beginning of the ladder season, but hey, it's still pretty close.
