View Full Version : UNDER the Ice?

Something that just occurred to me. The point of view of the splash screens is not looking down through the ice. It's looking up through it, from below. There are stars visible through the opening, after all. Also, it's lighter in the center, where the ice is broken, as though there were light coming in from the other side. If we were above the ice, the whole expanse would be light, and it would be darker near the center, since that's where the dark hole is.

This might just be a bit of artistic license, to make a cool star-speckled background, or it might be a literal, intentional direction. Most people seem to be thinking we're going to see something under the ice, when it's all cracked away and we can see through it. But that's not the direction of the images. They're looking up and through it, as if we were the ones buried under the ice and are now breaking through. So are we in Diablo's POV, as he breaks out of his frozen hell?

Are we going to see what's breaking through the ice, or are we the one breaking out, and we'll see what's on top of the ice in the 6th image?

I see it as breaking through a wall, but that could work as well. Personally, the steam/wind flowing upward is what defines it for me.

that's a great theory, something i didn't think of before....and i think your right =). It makes me excited to think of all the possibilities

perhaps diablo found a way out and he is digging something out from under the ice?.... just a theory=)

Maybe his tea is warm, and he wants it iced.

The Frozen Throne was the receptacle of the soul of the Elder Shaman Ner'zhul following his transformation into the dreaded Lich King. It was shattered by Arthas Menethil, and the remnants now serve as the actual physical throne of the new Lich King created from the fusion of the souls of Arthas and Ner'zhul...

The ice fades to black as you work your way from the middle. (If we were on the outside looking at a bock of ice, or a wall of ice, wouldn't the ice be shaded differently?) When you consider that, yeah, it does look like we're the ones trapped inside a tomb of ice.

Another thing to note is that it doesn't resemble digging, but rather the entire surface is drifting apart, like a doorway of some sort.

Wow, I assumed that was what was happening right away when I first saw it. I never even thought that we were looking INTO the ice from up top because of the lighting, I just thought that when people wrote under the ice they were thinking of something completely different...

I guess that means I'm smarter than all of you combined.

That's what I thought too. Almost like you're in cubby hole of ice looking out into the sky.

Check this out, I already had some of this layed out. http://forums.diabloii.net/showthread.php?t=667481

Really only the first part is necessary now, because the rest is already known.

To me its a wall, but that might be because of the way the image is layed out. Another thing I noticed, which it may be nothing but this artists style, is the eyes. In the D2 cover with Diablo the eyes are the same like a diagonal line on top with a kind of L shaped sides.

Might be, but I still think that we're from above the skys down at the ice that's melting under "out feet". Something about the lightning, the shape of the ices and the way the end up- kinda rounded up like as they are falling toward those skys, and not toward us, what should be if we were trapped in icecave (I can't really explain that in English).

However, as the days go by it looks more like a wall for me.

The ice chunks are clearly falling towards us. Look at the 3ed screen. The chunks are layered above the wall = they are falling in, not out.

i agree with Maronnan

1. I wasn't talking about the direction of the falling ice pieces. I was talking about the angle of the ends of the pieces, will looks like they're curved toward the skys fitting much more the fact the the skys are beneath us.

2. I understand that the ice chucks are layered above the wall, however they still seem to be falling away from us for 2 reason:
* There are no ice pieces moving closer to us in next splashes
* The ice pieces that are above the wall can be the higher layers of the ice which is melting, slithering across the ice and falling down from the hole in the center. This is wierd, I know, but if you look at the pieces that AREN'T above the wall, they look much MUCH like they're falling away.

Just my option. Maybe I'm just stuck in this idea and can't see things straight.

Is the splash getting biger(i have to scroll in order to see the entier picture on my 1024x768 resolution) or am i not remebering the size of ones from yesterday and before?
It looks like we are getting closer to the hole in the ice(wichever way we are traveling.. up, down or forward).

I've thought so from splash screen one. I even uploaded one inverted image of the splash screen three with text "gives the feeling of being underground" or something.

One theory is that Diablo is banished to the outer darkness (=space) and his trying to find his way back.

Take a look at this:

Looks pretty good to me.

I wish it was Diablo 3 - but that recent Splash screen looks like an Archon from Starcraft.

What would space or stars have to do with Diablo?

Diablo is a demon from Hell - Diablo is not associated with ice, or cold or space.

Diablo is associated with fire, and heat and lava and the underworld.

Blizzard is just driving us crazy again - setting us up for a HUGE disappointment.

It's either a Starcraft announcement or another WOTLK commercial.

I regret not writing this yesterday as I thought to myself I should, but I'll write it now anyways: There's one image left, and the chances of getting thrown a ricochet the day before the announce is very huge. This is just because everyone's starting to make up their minds about which game it will be, and then blizzard screws with their minds again. It's still Diablo 3. Mark my words, tomorrow, there will be more RED than blue in that splash screen. So I'm happy that they've got a face looking somewhat like the Lich King today, because that just means that it won't be ;) D3 announce tomorrow guys:smug:

This could be very funny if the next splash will be ALL red.
Or better yet won't have nothing to do with the last splashes. It will just show "Diablo 3 is coming. Are you ready?"
