Do you need a unique D2 Key to play LoD?

Ok, I have 2 extra Lord of Destruction cd-keys that are all legit.

If I install Diablo II (without ever going online) then install LoD on two of my friend's computers with unique/legit cd-keys, they can go online, right?

I'm pretty sure that LoD only checks your LoD key when you go online, but I wanted to be sure...

It checks both classic and LoD keys when you go online.

Others can use your cd key, but unless it's friends who will let you go online as well I don't see why you would want to give it to them =/
