Just Save and Exit instead. You will still see the cut scene and will still open up the new difficulty level just like normal.

If you have telekinisis charges I think you can use the protal that way, but it's uneccessary.

Yep, just save and exit and it is the same as you stepping through the portals. I think this might only apply to later patches though??? If you are unsure just shop one of the staff merchants for something with charges for telekinesis and hit it that way.
