I honestly thing it's best to gear trapper for max damage gear w/ infinity merc, then MF. THe sacrifices to res/fcr/damage for MF aren't very helpful when your killing speed gets severely lowered.

If you can afford Enigma go that way.

You make it sound like trappers are weak sauce. He will have no problems with killing speed at all.

...If not geared probably they aren't comparable to the more popular MF characters, they can kill extremely fast with good gear...faster runs are always better than more MF. I honestly think even Enigma, shako and a gheeds is suitable MF.

They aren't any less suitable than a Fishymancer. You simply can get most of your kills from CE as long as you have a method of providing corpes. And personally I think LS+FB is a better method of getting them than skellies+merc.

I just built one of these myself, currently using:
armor: enigma
helm: shako, socket currently empty awaiting final gear choice/more suitable helm
gloves: rare 20ias/resists
boots: nats (there are many better choices but I had the nats there)
belt: arach
ring: soj, raven (for cbf)
amu: 2+trap sks rare with nice adds
charm: torch+anni, 4 or so trap skillers with 14 frw and some junk mods, a 14 res all gc
2x 3trap claws, hoto and lidless on switch - been messing around with both to compare killing speed. Seems comparable and the extra resists on the latter mean that fade isn't necessary in a lot of places, allowing BoS to be used instead for faster running/trap laying.

Merc has infy, tals mask and duriels currently, looking to switch to forti.

As you can probably tell I haven't sat down and done the calculations for the various breakpoints (and subsequent eq swaps) yet so it's nowhere near finalised, but I've been messing around running through hell, and provided the merc can stay alive it's a very viable build. I ran all the popular superuniques, bosses and key locations, and I think with a bit of practice it wouldn't take me significantly longer than it would my hammerdin. It's also great fun, which is far more important, really.
