for a bvc.
does the 200 something def really worth the other options you can have in the 1 socket? 40/15max, 40/15ias even pruby seems to be better than the defense.
Plus eth ones are usually more expensive too...
Help me understand.
It looks wicked cool on a ebotd barb with an eth valor. =)

and if it brokes?
I can think of two main uses of ETH Arreat:
1. Put it on Act 5 Merc, since he can wear Barb only items, and it does not broke on a Merc.
2. Use it during PvP, since dura does not decrease during PvP.
I also agree that socket a Zod makes the ETH Arreat useless...
More ideas are welcome
Cant break with a Zod in it and Zods are cheap as pickles on US East Ladder... not sure about elsewhere (I traded a Lo for 2 of them to give you an idea).
...and yeah, Act 5 mercs make great use of them (better than stinky old Andy's Visage)

Indeed they can make great use of them, but even if you have both there is still alot of merit to running the Andy's anyway. With any ias jewel you'll get 35 ias amongst other stats and this on a slow attacking act5 merc makes it contender on this mod alone.
Ar = something mercs almost never content with. (if they're close to the monsters level and discounting the ubers) they seemingly always hit.
higher leach on avg with Andy's too. This + more speed = a merc that will probably outlive the Arreat using one.
ultimately the better helm is that which balances out the Merc based on wep and armor of choice. :brainiac:
IAS for A5 mercs in attacks per second
base speed 0
48%=2
125%=2.5
base speed -10
30%=2
89%=2.5

Eth items, and normal items do loose durability in pvp.

i can think of ONE.
up it, zod it and use it on a high-def BvB build.
2. Use it during PvP, since dura does not decrease during PvP.
this is utter balderdash.
if gear didn't lose durability in PvP i'd be useing eth everything on my BvB.
to reiterate: gear will lose Durability in PvP.

Eth items, and normal items do loose durability in pvp.
 Guess I had a bad memory... sorry for the confusion :lipsrsealed:
I've only ever considered it a useful item in BvB, and even at that, only when upgraded with a lucky roll.
Concerning those jewels you mentioned, keep in mind that 40/15Max is bugged in armor and doesn't actually do what it's supposed to; and 40/15IAS won't affect WW.
Eth Arreats also drops strength and dex requirements by 10.
ED/IAS Jewels in helms don't affect WW why?

ED/IAS Jewels in helms don't affect WW why?
It affects WW damage, but not speed, since the way WW speed is calculated only replies on the weapon type and weapon IAS. It is just how it is...

Whirlwind has a separate breakpoint system, probably to account for new dual-wielding and Assassin use. It's listed in the 'Weapons which reach the last breakpoint for Whirlwind' thread in the guide thread that's stickied.
Oh, yeah, and getting killed by other players in hardcore doesn't count as a real death. All those HCPK threads must be rubbish. ;>

I guess 15res/20life or something, still beats 200 defense for non-bvb
15 ias 40ed is still the best to put in it, makes you berzerk faster and if you use widomaker gets that to next ias bp as well.

There's a nuance about using the same gear for different builds or attack skills, especially when taking specialized breakpoints, like Whirlwind's, into account. I go over it a bit in the Immortal King Discussion thread I posted earlier, but the idea is that you should think long term with respect to socketing, especially expensive jewels since you keep the socketed item with the cube recipe, now.
For a bit more detail, Whirl needs only +29%WIAS to hit the last BP, which means there's no need for a Shael, just two jewels which can have magic-only prefixes. With IK, the best FPA with standard or similar attacks is 10, but the max without Fanaticism is 11 if at least one Shael is in the weapon and every other socket is Fervor'd while wearing one of the two IAS amulets. It really isn't worth it, as 12FPA can be hit with the same Whirl jewels in the ogre maul and an amulet, which you can change for something better should you ever get a Faith for your cold Rogue as you'll make 10FPA with any roll.
Plan ahead and you can keep the sockets for things that benefit everyone you'd use the item on.

The only reason I can see that eth Arreats are usefull are on BvB's to have as much defense as possible.
