1. Using Act III Cold Merc, if I outfit him with a piece of chain mail and insert three topaz gems, does the magic find on my Merc affect me?
2. I have picked up a unique throwing axe; however, I am not throwing it rather using it as normal; it does not show a durability, does this mean it is indestructible?
3. I am a lvl 24 Paladin working my way through, should I worry about keeping anything other than what I need to get me to Nightmare? I mean other than Jewels, Runes, and Gems? Most of the weapons I find only have 20-30 damage, which is pretty weak right?

Your merc's MF doesn't affect, if you do the final kill. But if your merc does the kill, his and yours mf will count. So if you have 100mf and your merc have 50mf, the final mf is 150mf, if the merc kills. If you kill, only that 100mf.

2. I have picked up a unique throwing axe; however, I am not throwing it rather using it as normal; it does not show a durability, does this mean it is indestructible?

Yes. Throwing weapons don't have any durability so they can't be broken.

20-30 damage carries you propably through normal act2, so no need to keep those. There is not much items in normal that are useful for later difficulties.

So if I give him the MF, I should just stand around at let him kill everything, good idea, he does a pretty good job at it.

Yeah, good idea indeed. And remember, you can help your merc. Just don't kill the monster, but harm it. if you're a sorc, static field comes to mind

However, the stack will decrease. You'll end up with 0 throwing axes (empty stack) and thus empty handed.

Even if I am not throwing them the stack will decrease?

Yes, in case of throwing weapons, quantity replaces durability. Just try poking with a javelin for a while, you will notice the quantity decreases. Same applies for other thrown weapons.

I will have to check my stack size when I get home, I know it said something like 86 yesterday when I was playing.

That sucks cause its the best weapon I have found, even with 150MF I can't seem to find anything with any decent damage ratings.

Unless it's ethereal, you can always repair it at a vendor.

MF has nothing to do with the "quality" of things you find (neither their properties, nor the base item). it only raises the chances of an item that would drop anyway, to be magic, rare, set or unique.

I realize that; however, most of the better weapons are magic, rare, set & unique, right?

Yes, but you mustn't exclude runewords (some of them are much more powerful than any unique), and those require white/socketed items.

However, early on, it's true, the selection of the runewords is rather limited.

For throwing weapons quantity does not replace the durability. They still have durability, except it's hidden. When the dur hits 0, one is deducted from the quantity, and the dur is reset.

And how much durability do they have?

The search function doesn't work on a lot of posts from 2004-2006, it's probably in there. Did you post it in the sticky of the stats forum ? :wink3:

The above is correct, I logged on last night, and whacked around for a while, my stack count went from 86 to 51 without ever throwing a single axe.
