It seems to have some of the mods folks want. The more detailed the explanation of why it's good/bad, the better, as I'd like to learn what to look out for in the future. TIA

NPC-food bad.

Good:
+ 40 IAS
+ 2 Pally Skills
- Decent base weapon

Bad:
- No ED (Cruel's)
- No AR/Max per clvl (Fool's) or AR/ED (Master's)
- It's Ethereal, and is not part of the Phase Blade sword family/has auto-repair

Something that can easily beat it:

The Atlantean
Ancient Sword
One-Hand Damage: (54-63) To (129-150) (91.5-106.5 Avg)
Required Level: 42
Required Strength: 127
Required Dexterity: 88
Durability: 144
Base Weapon Speed: [0]
+200-250% Enhanced Damage (varies)
+2 To Paladin Skill Levels
50% Bonus To Attack Rating
+75 Defense
+8 To Vitality
+12 To Dexterity
+16 To Strength

What to look for in the future:

+ (201-300)% Enhanced Damage
+ 40 IAS
+ AR/Max per clvl OR Max per clvl OR ED/AR
+ 2 Open Sockets
+ (15-25) Max Damage OR Self-Repair/part of Phase Blade family and Ethereal
+ (15-25) Min Damage

I've placed them in order of importance.

Bad, though it has some good mods, it also have crippling problems.

The Good:
- Rune Sword: Decent base item type when upgraded to Cryptic Sword, though Phase Blades are more popular.
- +2 to Paladin Skills: Popular class that usually uses one-handed weapons, so it'll would have some use.
- 40% IAS: Great mod, attacking faster is always beneficial and +40% is the highest you can score on a rare without using sockets.
- 9% Life stolen: Again, good melee mod that most people want somewhere.
- Ethreal: +50% damage right there, but there is one problem...

The Bad:
- Ethreal: ...and that is the lack of self-repair or indestructability. Without either one of those, the weapon will last only for a little while before it breaks, rendering it useless.
- Lack of enhanced damage: Simply, the ethreal bonus wont do much alone. Melee weapons need high damage and unfortunately the item doesnt have that. For a high end weapon you want at lteas +200% damage.
- Wasted modifiers: Both the +3 minimiun damage and bonuses vs. undead are pretty useless, most of the time you simply wont notice they are there.

What Would Make It Better:
- Sockets: Sockets are good. They offer weapon customizability, allowing to add things like damage, speed and other effects.
- Elemental Damage, higher max/min damage: Basically any modifier that adds a decent amount of damage is good. For example, minimiun damage can be as much as +20, max damage goes in the 60's and elemental damage can go as far as 1-480 lightning.
- Enhanced Damage: Already mentioned above.
- Self-repair: Ditto.

Ethereal isn't an insurmountable problem, it just means you'd have to socket it with a Zod, but for this sword it's not worth it. As the other two have said, the low damage is the main problem.

TYVM. How much better would it be with self-repair?

It would still be charsi food, at least usable until you found a unique weapon.

Yeah just a zod, we all have those laying around.

Yeah just a zod, we all have those laying around.Depends where you're playing I guess. On Eur/NL A lot of people consider zods to be crap hrs and won't trade them at hr prices (along with Sur, Lo, and Cham), so yeah a lot of people do have zods lying around or certainly would be able to trade for one with minimal fuss. I apologise if you find this notion offensive.

Even where a zod is worth a few pgems, you could get The Atlantean just as well- or a Buther's pupil, or Baranar's star. Hopefully a zod is worth more then those in any trading area :P
