do you get a worse end-act-boss drop if you go to town mid-battle?

it seems like every time I make a trip to town while fighting an act-end boss (for the first time on that char/difficulty) and then come back to finish him/her off, I always get a terrible drop. coincidence?

There actually was something similar that used to be true. In earlier patches of the game, if you left an area while fighting a superunique, the superunique's drop would be reset to that of Bishibosh. This bug was how people got the ancients to drop items. Of course, they didn't realize this is what was happening, otherwise they never would have bothered.
