View Full Version : Question on smiters
Hi all. The time has come for me to make a smiter :azn:
I plan on using cutlass +2pala 40ias / +2pala barbed / gobs for the skills/dmg/ias/CB
However I will need an additional 8%ias from gear to reach fastest smite frame. Im thinking about gloves here so I can aviod using twitch as block will be a little problem with max HS. So I was thinking should I make him all about vitality for add 100+str to make use of the mass defence option located in this build if you plan on going defiance?
Give me some ideas on skill allocation with the remaining points after smite/fana/hs and what gear build you would use.

I think Warlock has experimented with a defiance smiter
Are you really sure that you need 10 ias? If this is true, then rare gloves with 10ias/str/resists would be the best. Alternatives would be twitch, goldwrap, death's set (gloves+belt), sigon's set (bad).
If your calculations are right (not so sure) and you need only 10 ias (is this with, or without fanaticism?) then rare gloves with high def and maybe str + ias/res would be the best (basically some bvb gloves). Please note that defense smiters actually turn fanaticism off and use defiance.
IMO a -30req ornate would be best for you, or some other high defense armor, which requires low strenght. An alternative - boneflesh or rattlecage, because goblins slow you down, I think you have to charge the typical opponent and then try to smite him/her

Seeing how this is my first time building a smiter I think I wanna go max HF for pwm as I will most likely get him wrong the first time.
Ooh, I'm not sure I would recommend smiting with a 1-range weapon.

Without fana you need 65ias to reach 6fpa with a pala, smite, using a cutlass.
With level 24 fana, you need 7ias to reach 6fpa with a pala, smite, using a cutlass.
You use gobs, you have max holy shield and you are using a cutlass with 40ias, imho, you don't really need fana. All you need is 30ias(25 technically) on top of the 40 you already have.
You can use sigon gloves with another part of the set(preferably 2 parts of the set to get that extra 100 def and one of the parts at least being the belt to have that gives 2 def per level). I would go for gloves, belt boots myself.
Perhaps you want some cbf, in which case you could go for deaths sash and gloves.
Or add hawk on top of the sigons. Both those methods severely cut into your defence.
If you want cbf and def there is only one option though, full Hsarus, probably combined with sigons gloves and helm to still reach your breakpoint.
Mind you, getting that fastest breakpoint really doesn't mean anything unless you get really good at pushing your targets against a object.
Like Fredgeling wrote, a -30 req ornate would be very nice to have if you are going for a def smiter.
When you make a smiter you really have to ask yourself, what do I want to duel ?
My defence smiter has almost 19k defence when I put on my shopped 15/10 298 def grim shield. WW Barbs still hit even if they have only 5k ar. Last time I had a barb shout I had 23k defence or so and then the barbs hit me a lot less. Most of my gear doesn't have perfect defence, so the defence could definately be higher. It might be possible to fight WW barbs and win, but you will need deep pockets or a lot of time for shopping at Drogan and Jamella. In fact, if you don't get stuck on the highest breakpoint since you can't force a barb against the wall anyway, you could shop almost all of the gear for this pala. The shield you might want to spend some resources on though. It really doesn't need res if you fight barbs, so don't go overboard on a pris/PD sock/stacked shield.
Supposing you look around for a shield for your def pala, you will mainly want it to have defence, secondly 30/20 or 15/10, thirdly pala skills, then fhr, in that order of importance. Shield type hardly matters, so grim would be the better choice. Even Hsarus shield will do massive damage because of Holy Shield.

Well I decided to go more on a pvm route rather than def (pvp) as Im still trying to master him. Mainly this is a char for me to experiment on and then remake if I would like the defense. Atm Im using twitch for extra block + stats but I think I will switch out with death combo for res + ias + cbf and lose the nasty looking twitch on my smiter. Hate the look on paladins. But I imagina def smiters costing a lot of currency to build so Im just looking to experiment on this and get some better gear if I like what I see. So far he is great fun level 56 and still needing to max hs and get another shield rather than steelclash

how much are those shields worth?
+2 high def barbed with pris and 30/20

Priest (pala +2) is a prefix
Holy (high defence) is a prefix
Prismatic is a prefix
of Defiance (30/20) is a suffix
of Stability(fhr) is a suffix
1 prefix and 1 suffix per magic item.
up to 3 (different)prefixes and up to 3 (different)suffixes per rare item.
So you won't be able to find a high defence +2 pala magic shield of any type.
For my pala, defence is more important then shield type.
I have a +2 pala, 17/30/20 149 defence barbed shield and I'll be swapping (still keeping the barbed on that pala) that shield for a 27x defence +1 pala shield with 10/30/20. The damage will not be affected by more then a few %.
On a sidenote, some shields have +damage on them, this will not affect your smite damage.

on another forum, on east softcore ladder, a non socked barbed matching that description (having a tough time remember if it was indeed 30/20, but I know it was priz/barbed +2) went for the equivalent of just under 2 sojs via /pm. pretty sure it was indeed 30/20 as a friend wanted to make a smiter and use said sheild, and was pretty chapped when the buffoon with bad manners offered it to the market, then took a BIN offer via /pm with open offers in the thread.
