(Inspired by fledgeling's post in the Holy shield thread)

So, when you first started Diablo II, what things impressed you the most?

I was stunned when I saw my first 7xx Ornate Plate. Also stunned when I first saw Hydras.

...you?

I'm new here, but been playing the game since 2001 or close.

I have vague memories of being impressed with a flail that my Amazon had. Bearing in mind I don't think I got over level 15 and was probably 1.03, it can't have been that great now, but still...

I was also amazed that one of the flatmates was in act 3.

For me it was the fact that your character changed looks when gear was changed.

I was impressed by the necromancer skeleton summons, they looked very cool and I loved sitting back and watching them kill for me.

Multi kills - you know, opening up with Blizzard or Orb and watching the screen full of enemies die all at once......
using a Poisen Nova necro in normal cows and wiping a flooded cow portal clean with a mass "MOO"...
Iceblink and a HUGE axe on a WW barbarian going through flayers "tsk tsk tsk tsk tsk" as they all shatter...
Color changing characters like previous post - black barb with horned armour looking like a gargoyle as he jumps through the air....

silk was like the best item ever, huge defense, nice blue colour and +1 skills : )

I actually played with 64mb of ram, the computer would basically die for 2 seconds when I made an orb

bonesnaps were big, when I played in these normal games, full of fresh starters, noobs and beggars

sigon's set was nice too, +20 fire damage zomg!

I have my level 30 necro somewhere, with 1 point into each skill (level 3 skellies or something!), heavenly garb (15res!) and that 114dmg unique lance - this damage was huge for me(I never had any luck in finding any good weapons in single player)
this necro is sooo bad :D

The above post reminds me of when I made Fred's auradin, and watching the whole screen of cows just drop every time my aura flashed.
The sound that flayers make when you hit them with inferno is also a special treat. Flayer -- "Oo, ee ah, ah, oh, ee, ah, ah, oo,ee,ee,ee, ooh".

When I first started, I thought sig's armor looked cool, and the first time I saw a barb ww was amazing.

my very first character was a summon necro. this during the time of hell cows giving gobs of xp and not needing resistance, I ended up going for defense in addition to my meatsheild and actually ended up wearing an ornate...

the eye opener for me was a then lower level barb hostiling me and blazing through not only all of my lvl 22 summons with lvl 22 mastery, but as well through me...

he then milked me nk for a fair amount of gold before then allowing me to see his gear.

pruby dcara, and a pskull SS were among the dupes he was wearing compared to my poor necro's crummy 700 def ornate, and obviously low life due to the str/dex allocations I had gone with...

after that my next level of amazement was how much better +2/+3 sceptre speed hammers were for a din, compared to my previous din that relied upon shard/silk/tarn...

I was very impressed the first time I saw a Paladin and Barbarian dueling. They were low level, and it was zeal vs bash. I loved the way their shields sounded and looked when they blocked hits. It was a giant graphical step forward from the melee duels I saw in D1. I loved how each char kept getting interrupted by the other's attacks. This was back before zeal was uninterruptable.

Another big event was the first time I was killed in 1 hit by a character of similar level. It was a 2h charger, and it made me realize that wow, I have a lot to learn about this game!

The last thing that immediatly came to mind was the first time I saw lightning fury level a herd of cows that I could not even see the edges of.
