Hi.
I'm on my first run ever through diablo 2. First two quests... No hassle, RPG Slice and Sell heaven. :azn: I soon clear out the first two Quests, attire myself in as mush state of the art as possible and make myself a flaming attack enhanced short sword. Cash is rising and the bad guys are litterally dropping like flies. So I save, do some stuff, ready to come back later for more all refreshed and raring to slash.
Then it happens... When I restart my saved game at the beginning of Quest 3, all the monsters I had so patiently slaughtered are back! Every damn one of them. So I'm now searching for an 'underground passage' that has no specific location, just rekilling everything I've just killed! Then, just as I've cleared out on pointless 2 level cave I decide this passage must be in the 'mausauleum' or 'crypt' that I had no reason to go in during the last quest. Alas! Not only is it packed with the MFKs I just slaughtered, but the Queen ***** is back - the one I had to kill to complete Quest 2!!! And she kills me!!!! So I turn off the damn computer!!!! :jig:
1) Is this gonna happen everytime I go back to the game after a save?
2) Where's the MFKing 'underground passage'?
3) How can you tell if a cave/building is for a later quest or just for pillaging?
4) What do You mean only 4 images per post! I'm a smilie addict! They're like punctuation marks! Not alowed 17... indeed, I ask you... The liberty... what a f***ing liberty.
In retrun for your kind and helpfull responses, I can offer you nothing but fruitfull fruitcakes made by dear MrKryptking.
Many thanks in advance.

Welcome to the forums!
1) Is this gonna happen everytime I go back to the game after a save?Yes. If you don't want to repeat killing monsters, then try to find a waypoint before exiting.
2) Where's the MFKing 'underground passage'?The underground passage is named "The Underground Passage" and is in the Stoney Field. You can follow the road to it.
3) How can you tell if a cave/building is for a later quest or just for pillaging? For the most part, Diablo II is pretty linear. You shouldn't have to worry about it.

Hey, thanks for the quick response!
So I should have cleared the cave and crypt and mausoleum During quest 2. Darn, I knew it!
And the passage is in the next chunk of wilderness, each chunk of wilderness representing 1 quest kind of thing. Oh, it's so obvious once you know
Hmm, not sure If i can cope with another game that involves regenerating bad guys. Anyway I can get a patch or cheat to stop this? Sorry, it's one thing I really can't bare. :undecided:
And while I'm here, how do you stop your 'team member' shooting everything before you even get so see what they're shooting at? (Problem of missed goodies issue). Or should I just sit back and let them do all the work till the next swarm appears?

I giggled a little while reading his post. come on dont be a party pooper.
But yes if you just follow the road you will find everthing you need to...Its pretty upseting but thats how it works.
Double posting here is bad. There is an edit button learn how to use it.
Ok but to answer your question hold down the "alt" key it will show you whats on the ground.
And we also don't promote hacks/cheats here so no I can't help you with what you asked.

K. Thanks for all the helpfull responses. Might be another case of quick resale for this puppy, dunno, might have another crack at it when I next get bored.
It was so much fun, I recommend it for Sacred type fans, or whatever that RPG with the horsies was called. Maybe I shud upgrade and get neverwinter 2 so I don't have to keep upsetting poor administrator with this game anymore.
seriously, great boards, keep up the good work!
And sorry for disturbing you!

LastDanceSaloon: the point of this game is to level up and be strong so that you can kill super tough monsters. (i guess grossly simplifying the mission statement actually makes this game kinda... homo... i know... but its fun, trust me)
so respawning monster (or reappearing monsters after each safe) is actually a good thing, as you get more experience everytime you kill them
(sorta like pokemon, i don't know if you ever play that when you are a kid. remember how when you need to get your pikachu to level 99 you need to kill the elite 4 over and over again? same concept here)
this game, like final fantasy and such rpg games, have "save points" or in the game, they are called "way points" if you click on the rogue encampment waypoints, you will see that there are a number of waypoints with blank next to them. those are waypoints that you can unlock, and it basically let you go to that area real quick, without having to run from the starting place to the last place that you killed monsters.
if you are playing in single player, notice that the area you unlocked will not change even if you save and exit, and come back on. that changes in multiplayer. in multiplayer, new maps are generated everytime you save and exit. thus, you might find a chest next to a cave one game, and you might not see the same chest next to a cave the other. that's why waypoints are especially important as a time saver in multiplayer (though single player too)
------
how can you tell if a cave/building is essential for quest or just for pillage?
well, you can always reference the official site:
go to google and type in keyword "arreat summit" and the first link is the official site for the game. it's very comprehensive with almost everything you need to know about the game. if you are confused about an area, just check under the section "quest" to see if an area is relevant or not.
--------
i was registered to this site like gazillion years ago. i remembered i spend 10 minutes filling up the screen with smilies. (okay, back then phone lines were slow, and smilies took forever to load, so it's actually not THAT many smilies) thinking i would be funny to reply with a post like that.
i was fairly disappointed when i find out the same thing as you just found out.
(after wasting 10 min.)

hey, Thanks for the link. I probably will be having a second stab as I've fairly worn out all the others that my comp can cope with. I have the same feeling as I had with Fable where the game has suddenly decided to take me back in time because of a rancid saving system. There I am with a barrel load of plans and ideas for my charater, then all of a sudden I'm not where I should be because I could neither effect a timely save nor quit the game at a specific moment and all my plans lie in confused tatters. Have I lost my ruby? Where'd my fox's armour? what are my skill points? Do I have to do that 'tedious' cave all over again, this time with the forknowledge that there's nothing of real interest down there but a couple of sellable items. Fable was a horrif regenerator, again to help boost skill points. I heard of one bloke who's Fable was 66 years old with massive skill sets and armour but not one single mission completed. I guess I could do that here but without the hassle of ageing.
When I restart it I'm just going to treat the whole game like payday and pretend I'm going clothes shopping which, for me, is kind of heaven. So when I go back with all this new knowledge I'll know just how to shop.
Bring on the magical armour plate!
It can be a little frustrating at first, and in my opinion it does kind of ruin the first-time single-player questing experience a little, but questing experience isn't a quarter of what Diablo 2 has for you - IF you are the type of person who appreciates it. There's a reason why this game has a very active multiplayer community 7 years after release - and regenerating monsters is an essential part of this reason. If you think it ruins single-player questing completely, jump straight into multiplayer and magic finding.

I try to simulate the "Diablo 1" way. I clear out an area and find the waypoint. Since I am in Single Player, I know where the exit is (since the map is the same). Next playing session, I will just run out into my "new" territory and take it from there.
I do not like the respawning monsters and the saving system, but I have learned to cope with it.
For MF-ing and twinking, it is emphatically awesome. But yes, for single-pass it is obviously detrimental. An option to turn it off would be much appreciated.
You've learned where the quest log is right?
hit Q, it will practically tell you exactly what to do each time
I don't either like that monsters respawn in single player. I don't play single player to make super twinked builds, or to get high level chars, I play it to complete the game.
You do know what waypoints are, right?
Beside it seems like you absolute must kill every monster, if so, then why? The game is about defeating the prime evil before the enslave all humans, not to kill random demons that have spawned due to the prime evils, you're actually loosing time killing those monsters! Ok you'll have to kill some monsters to get experience, but full clear, for me at least, has never been the thing.
I've always tried to follow a certain route. Which might imply that I don't appreciate waypoints either.
First time: Follow the path, get the waypoint at cold plains. Keep following the path. You might end up at quest 2, then complete the quest, go back, and go the other way, do still follow the path.
The path will end at a place called "underground passage" go through it, when you get out of the passage you can still follow a path, keep following it. When you've reached a monastary, go inside, and take the waypoint. "Waypoint to the outer cloister". When you've this waypoint, and if you're playing on limited time, now will be a good time to exist the game. Depending on your speed you can get to the waypoint at about 15 minutes, being around level 6-8 I think.
Second time: Now complete the quests, usually you shouldn't have any problems completing quest 1 to 3 now, since you've been to every area there is. You might want to make sure you've a good amount of time for quest 4.
When quest 1-4 are completed you can move on. Now play like you want to, when you get to the "inner cloister" waypoint you might want to save and exist, given you are playing on limited time.
Third time: Complete the last quest in your current world. This can take some time to do, a good advice when fighting the end boss, drink a couple of antidotes, like 20 or so at the same time. You can buy then at akara.
Well this should more or less complete act1 in 30 minutes to ?? depending on how you like to play. Though you shouldn't get to much problems with monster respawning. Remember eventhough you've the "outer cloister" waypoint, you'll probably be to low level to continue, unless your char has been designed for that.
I'm not going to give you any spoilers or something like that, so I'm not telling anything about the rest of the game. However if you begin finding it dull later on, then maybe it just isn't your game.
Have fun!
(sorta like pokemon, i don't know if you ever play that when you are a kid. remember how when you need to get your pikachu to level 99 you need to kill the elite 4 over and over again? same concept here)
And some of us completed the game a single time, and never played it again, like so many other games.
Kind Regards

Hi again! Thanks for all the useful tips, I have now managed to compfortably complete (well... I did die twice, but heh...lol) level 1 and am now resting my laurels in the desert camp! I have to say the town portals are much more useful than the waypoints, but I've been using the waypoints as save points as suggested by the experienced folkys.
From what I've learnt, I still need a couple of tips on this regenerating thing, and a couple of other points also. Grab urself a cup of cocoa/warm beer and put ur feet up, I've got lots of little things to ask you kind people:
1) My system has been to completely clear levels up to the waypoint, then just use direct routes to get back to where I was. Thus my character has got to this stage:
Level 15 Paladin
Strength 42 (attack damage 6-20 - with might level 6)
Dexterity 41 (attack rating 211 / defence 143)
Vitality 54 (stamina 132 / Life 174)
Energy 22 (mana 46)
Fire resistance 10
Cold resistance 17
Lightning resistance 25
Poison resistance 26
Should I now 'go back east' and collect some more stats b4 continuing? Have I hurried myself into a weak position?
My clothing is as folows:
Angelic Sickle - 350% damage to undead / +75 attack rating / Damage 3-8
Carrion Suit Ring Mail (Made by 'the Hammer') - Defence 72 / poison length reduced 25% / fastest hit recovery / poison resist 5% / lightning resist 15% / +4 to Life
Gemmed Large Shield - Defence 13 / Poison resist 21% / Cold resist 10% / Lightning resist 15% / Fire resist 10%
Full Helm - Defence 24
Superior Chain Gloves - Defence 11
Chain Boots of Pacing - Defence 8 / Fast run/walk
Belt - Defence 5 (I have bought the Azure Heavy Belt of stability - Defence 6 / Fastest hit recovery / Cold resist 9% for when my strength reaches 46)
Azure Amulet of Dexterity - Cold resist 7%
Ring of Dexterity - +2 Dexterity
Ring of Craftmanship - +1 to maximum damage
Should I go 'back east' to try and find more stuff - would the system generate new treasures or just keep dishing out cracked quilted armour on the second run.
Also - Is it worth collecting sets or should I change my sickle to a Septor at this stage? (space is tight and the sickle is begining to look sickly at this level). I also have a helm of fury, should I just sell that?
And - How long will my gorgeous Carrion armour be good for? It's so nice, but now, with the new level, there seems to be a whole new level of armour. Does this happen every level? If I go back east to fight some regenerated monsters will I get new level armour at the shops or do they stay old level?
With regards to my spellbook, I've been treating my paladin as a fighter with spells. The spells seem a bit 'weak' though atm, so I've been shuving eveything into might:
Offensive Auras - Might Level 6 - All others level 1
Defensive Auras - All at level 1
Combat Skills - None but a Level 1 in the first one.
Am I approaching this too short-term? Am I going to end-up in a Divine Divinty state of having the wrong spell to kill the final bad guy and so not be able to complete the game without huge amounts of regenarating monster killing?
And finaly:
Will there be any point going 'back east', is it plot relevant or fun relevant?
What do I do with Wirt's leg?
Is the Amulet of the Wolf - +13 to Life better than my current Amulet?
Should I sell my Infernal Cranium Cap? Are 'Set' items a part of the game or are they random luck drops?
How do you use Gas/Oil potions?
Lol, might take more than one of you to answer these, I really wouldn't expect someone to go through all of them, lol. Guess you can if you want though :-I
I also have 41,000 gold (too little/too much?)
This game is fun when you get used to it, it's just a bit irritating how you seem to be forced into sectional playing chunks rather than ad-hoc jump-ins. Makes me paranoid of that the system could break at any moment (just at the wrong moment) and erradicate 2 hours of play that all has to be tediously repeated. Glad to say this hasn't happened, so all's good atm.
Thanks again in advance!
Your char certainly looks fine. To be honest, there's three dificulities in diablo 2, and you're playing on the easiest one, so you really shouldn't worry that much, almost any kind of mix of skills and attribute points will eventually get you through this level.
Just so you know, you'll first be able to play harder dificulities when you've completed the easiest one (the one you're playing) and only with the char who's done so.
I usually check my chance to hit a monster, if it's above 70% I'll just continue. I''m certain that your chance to hit is much higher. (This is against the generel monster)
So as of what I can see, there's no reason to travel back east. If you're very item focused, you'll probably want to magic find while playing. There's no need to "run" certain areas at this stage, just go to elzix (he's at the north east of lut gholein), and buy some boots with about 20-25% magic find and some gloves with the same numbers. This will give you 40-50% magic find, which will help you a lot later on! Or it may do
Just to make sure, you're playing on battle net, since you've had people playing with you, right? Or was that bow char you talked about earlier your hireling from Kashya?
Otherwise then get the newest version of the game, by accesing battle.net, it'll download it automatic. Though if you're playing the version form when you just install, it should be version 1.07, which might would be funnier to play, I'm not sure, but I'm not going to talk more about that now.
Your damage is quite fine, but I'd change to a sceptor.
If you can't use "helm of fury" then just sell it.
Your armor, imbued I suppose, will be good for a very long time. However you'll probably find better, and that will in most situation be much earlier than when you actually find yourself in a "need" for an armor change, so don't worry.
If you're playing the newest version, you'll might note that some skills gives other skills more power, try out some of the combat skills and pick the one you like. You can read about them here at this homepage also, you know. If you're playing an older version, 1.07 I'd guess, then I must admit I haven't played it enough to know how crucial skill points will be, I'm pretty convinced that a high level might aura will take you far in to even the hardest dificulity, given you don't lack any other sources of course. So no I don't think you've invested your skill points wrong.
Your stat points looks good to, usually, depending of your style also of course, one would try to get a high load of hit points, 75% block through dexterity, and enough strength to carry item.
Oh that reminded me, you're playing the expansion pack, Lord of Destruction right?
It's not plot relevant to go back east. However when you finish your dificulity you might want to go back to the rogue encampment, and do some stuff, which I'm not going into right now, and it'll open a secret level, where you'll fight monsters, not specify strong each, but in so huge hordes, that you probably won't stand a change. At least not at that level.
Wirt's leg is something you can always get, it respawns too, so you can just drop it now. You can enter tristram again without any problems.
Well, I'd probably use the +13 life amulet, but it's all your choice mate.
Btw. you've way to much gold, you should sell some of it to a vendor, hehe, just kidding. You can't have to much gold, and you actually do have, you just won't be able to hold it. :wink3:
Just wanted to assure as well that you don't have to worry about anything at all. At this point of the game it's hard to make choices that could possibly lead to problems.

What version of the game are you playing? It's clear to me that you're playing D2Classic (not the expansion), but which patch (1.01-1.11) is it? That information is very important in answering any questions you may have. The game has changed enormously from when it was first released.
You might want to look at some of the guides in the Classic Forum for places to put skill points and stat points. Some of the skills are useful with 1 point, others should either be maxed or ignored. There are also very distinct 'builds' for each class. A paladin that uses zeal as their main attack is normally referred to as a zealot, and would make completely different stat, skill, and gear choices from what a paladin focusing in blessed hammer would.
As for gear choices, it can definitely be a bit confusing at first. As a rule of thumb, for a melee character like I assume your paladin is, you probably want a high damage 1-handed weapon that is decently fast. You should be able to buy something from the vendors in act 2 or gamble something much better than the Angelic Sickle. Armor choices are a little more difficult because of the varying mods. It would probably be easiest if you read up on the mods a little bit, or just played around for a while and asked specific questions about specific mods.
EDIT:
A couple other notes and corrections.
1) Block chance in classic is just the block chance listed on the shield. It is only in Expansion that Block chance is based on level and dexterity
2) There are 3 difficulties to the game, but it's not like you start a new character for each difficulty. Once you defeat the game on normal, you can go back to playing all the areas you have already been, or you can move onto nightmare, which is a repeat of the entire game with a resistance penalty, harder monsters, more experience, and a chance at better items
3) Set items are not necessary for the story arc. If an item is not mentioned by one of the townspeople, then you probably don't need it. It is extremely difficult to collect entire sets, and the bonuses for most aren't really worth it, so if you don't see a use for an item, jettison it. Alternately, you can use a tool like ATMA (http://forums.diabloii.net/atma.diabloii.net) to "mule" items from one character to another character or a secondary stash.
Set items are items with fixed stats. If you collect and wear multiple pieces of a set, you will gain extra bonuses. If you wear all items of a set, you will gain even more bonuses. You can see a list of set items at the Arreat Summit (http://forums.diabloii.net/battle.net/diablo2exp). Note that much of the information there is specific for the Expansion, and some of that information is also wrong. It should be a good start for you though.
It's very important to note, that only the character that has defeated the given difficulity, can move on to the next difficulity.
I remember the first time I was about to enter nightmare, I was planning on using a paladin for normal, a necro for nightmare, and a sorc for hell
