View Full Version : Has anyone tried giving their merc infinity scythe?

It seems like this might be a good idea. The merc is basically just a moving conviction aura and he wouldn't kill himself from iron maiden. The only problem I can see with this is survivability issues for the merc since he basically won't be leaching anything. Has anyone tried this?

iirc people do this to counter IM in chaos sanctuary. so it has been done =)

I'd like to know how well this works.. does anybody use a setup like this? Is the survivability of your merc an issue(iirc my last lit sorc killed everything before my merc had a chance to do anything anyways)? And I can't seem to remember w/ my last sorc (about a year ago) if infinity broke gloams/souls immunities, does it (do i need a certain amount of additional -res from equip to break soul/gloam immunities)?

Edit: Basically I remember getting severely annoyed with IM, particularly in the chaos sanc and I'm trying to decide if I want to wield the infinity scythe or give the scythe to the merc(I'd rather do this so I can load up on mf).

Gloams have 100 lightning resistance, so conviction will break their LI (at least on normal gloams).

I don't have an infinity, but with a lite sorc I'd focus more on proper positioning with teleport to keep the merc from dying (just leave him in a place long enough to line the baddies up, then tele a bit away and spam lightning on them) than on making the RW in a low weapon.

I have used an Insight scythe in chaos before (too expensive to make a second infinity ), it sort of works. He rarely kills himself from IM, but the lack of leech and the utter uselessness of your merc outside of chaos is somewhat of a drawback. (I like mine to be able to kill the occasional unbreakable immune) If you are mfing in places other than chaos, I wouldn't bother with the scythe. If you are doing chaos only, then it would be worth it. (or if you have 2x Infinity's and use one for chaos and one for elsewhere)

I only use a scythe on my light sorcs! you dont really need your merc to do heavy dmg anyway, you should be doing that!

Basically, everyone and their dog use Infinity on their merc, provided they are a sorc and can afford it ;) It's a really popular runeword.

I believe the idea was in making it in a scythe, a base class normal polearm, thus rendering its damage minimal => iron maiden couldn't kill the merc.

Correct me if I'm wrong ( I haven't run chaos in ages ), but I thought Lord Seis can be spawned with an unbreakable light immunity so how must you kill him if your merc doesn't do any damage?

He occasionally spawns unbreakable. As does the annoying caster guy but it's *fairly* rare. Of course, some of the random champions can also spawn as unbreakable LI's depending on their mods. The worst run I had was 4x unbreakable champs in one run. Of course, that's once out of 50+ runs.

Either way, with a scythe merc, there's not much you can do against an unbreakable, other then spend 20 minutes watching your merc poke the critter to death. Either that or keep an alternate weapon like Obedience for your merc for those instances.

I'm going to try a trapper with a scythe infinity merc soon for chaos, so we'll see how it goes. My light sorc has an infinity on her merc in an eth CV and IM is a giant pain so I tend to run area's other than chaos.
