i believe so, but i believe that there is a penalty after normal. also, unless your dealing elemental damage, i think it would be a waste of skill points. i stopped playing pallys years ago so everything is a little hazy.

the conviction will work great for any elemental users in your party, but will be totally wasted on your attack.
you see, smite ignores defense and blocking. so you'll hit a 40k def barb (for example) just as easily as you'll hit a 2k def sorc (again, for example) with 0 +ar gear. smite doesn't need AR checks.
a Level 2 pally, with 1 point in Smite can hit Hell Diablo just as well as a level 90 pally with maxed smite (well, his damage will suck and he'll probably get pwnt by hell D in a matter of seconds ,but you get the idea)

Conviction will help your party members who use elemental attacks or have trouble hitting with weapons, but it's entirely useless for a smiter.
1. Smite completely ignores defense.
2. Smite cannot do elemental damage.
Why are you categorizing fanat with conviction, you can't substitute fanat for conviction.

I've got a conviction smiter in mid hell and he does alright. That's a PURE smiter with maxed smite that uses NO other attacks, no zeal etc. Conviction helps your merc a lot and is good with any "chance to cast" or "on attack/on striking" like with rift weap etc when you smite it makes frozen orb.
So IF you are sick of fanatic smiter then a conviction smiter can be fun but it is NOT a strong build. It is a great build for party play though! 5 second smite length and lvl 30(ish) conviction aura...
But isn't Conviction capped to level 25? So no for 30ish conviction  everything else sounds very nice and fun.

Conviction is not exactly capped. At lvl 25 it removes 150% resist, it will not go higher than that. However it will continue to lower def for every point after that.
You are sacrificing a lot to use only conviction while smiting. It does not help much.
I have a zealot who uses fanat most of the time. He only switches to conviction in order to override a bad guys conviction (such as Uber Meph) or to help against non-undead phy immunes.

Yeah it's not as stong as fanat BUT like I said is great for party play, if you play alongside a Tesladin etc!
Also lvl 30 (ish) conviction is good for overriding any monsters that have conviction aura. The higher the better. Like I said, not a strong build but a "theme" one. Sometimes you have to try something a bit different and a bit harder, which was similar to the opinion of the OP I think!

I'm playing a build that will be the best of 3 different builds combined. He's a Conviction/Fanatic Zealot/1 point Smiter. On first switch he uses Voice of Reason Phase Blade/Spirit SR with Conviction. On second switch he has Astreon's Iron Ward/HoZ with Fanaticism. On second switch he can either zeal or smite.
Other gear:
Guill's Face
Duress
Gores
TGods
Drac's
Highlord's
Raven and either BK, Dwarf Star or Nature's Peace depending on area
He'll have 98% CB on second switch and a Holy Shield Prebuff with 8 additional PCombat Skills (13-14 total).
Skills:
20 Zeal
18 Conviction (25-26 with plus skills)
20 Fanaticism
20 Holy Shield
1 point in prequisites and Defiance and Salvation
remainder into Sacrifice
A very versatile fun build to play.
