Very new to Diablo..boyfriend picked it up for me and I'm loving it! But as I've been reading up on Sorc guides I keep seeing so much conflicting information.

From what I've read the blizz/static field build seems to be fairly effective. But I do have a lot of mana issues so I'm surprised to see a lot of the guides on this forum suggest putting little to no points in energy.

Is this because of maxed warmth, or a lot of +mana gear?

Usually it's becaues of lots of +skills, +mana gear, and ultimately, insight runeword polearm on merc.

Yes, +skills add to warmth, and there are lots of +mana stuff out there.

Its tough in the beginning most definitely, the best you can do is if you have any points in cold spells like a blizzer or a meteorb, you can use chill/freeze + melee or let an act 2 merc tank.

Ask your boyfriend for lots of gold so you can buy lots of mana potions. That pretty much covers your mana problems for at least the early stages.

If you're going to be a block/vita sorc, then you don't need any energy at all. Your stats should be mostly in DEX or VIT, respectively. If you're going to use Energy Shield, most of your stats should be in Energy. Regarding STR and DEX (if you're not max block), you should only get enough to wear your equipment, including charms and equipment bonuses. You can get massive bonuses from charms (+2 from Small, +6 from Grand).

A few items with large +mana and some items which increase your mana pool also give you fantastic mana regeneration. An example would be a "Spirit" sword and "Spirit" Monarch, which together would add about +200 mana, +4 to all skills (which means that your Warmth is boosted that much more!), and if you equipped Frostburns, which would take your mana and increase it by 40%. Suddenly, you have more mana than you know what to do with, and all for free.

Some Sorceress builds are very mana intensive, requiring 1-1.5K+ mana, because they may rely on quirks like Energy Shield or be in the middle of enemy packs and hit often, so they need the extra mana to "buffer" in place of health. Other spells are simply mana hungry like Nova or Frost Nova and require fast casts to do a lot of damage and a large pool to avoid going dry in a few seconds. Other spells are much more mana efficient, either because of low-mana cost or delayed casting, which allows you to recoup mana during your "cool-down" period.

It depends on the build. Most Sorceress builds will allow you to get away with a no-point or minimal-point investment into Energy. A few like McCain's Blue Sorceress, Nova/Energy Shield, or Charged Bolt/Eenergy Shield builds might require moderate or heavy investments into Energy.

heh yes I've been keeping plenty of pots on me. I've opted for the meteorb route because I really just don't want to deal with immunes later on/ relying on mercs heavily.

Maiku - thank you..those are some good things to keep in mind. I knew people kept saying don't put points in energy you get it through gear...but having some examples like that keep me from being hesitant over this. So I now know what to look for.
