View Full Version : KTA - Preparations for the next round
so hi all!
having finished our "speed rules" theme (or army of fire ants, as it became known later on) yesterday evening its about time to start thinking of what is next.
playing times will be as they are, monday evenings at 20:00 amsterdam/paris time (wich translates to 19:00 UK time). we will ofcource play as we always do, untwinked ladder HC (europe).
so... first things first, we should make a list of who joins in, in wich current KTA members ofcource have first choise, any spots left after that can be filled in. we could take a 9th and maybe even 10th aplication as reserve spots, as only quite rarely can everyone make it on a single given night. Be informed then however that IF you are reserve... it COULD happen that you can't play on a certain occasion. Finaly i would like to add that we expect a certain amount of dedication to the team and that we DO expect you to be there on moost sessions. if you are already sure that you will miss a lot... please dont subscribe, and if you are the kinda guy who gets bored with stuff like this after 1 or 2 session... this aint the place for you then.

then... the last thing what needs sorting out before we are ready to go again... our theme (if any). last round it was all about speed, and i must say i kninda liked how that worked out. ofcource we can't use the same theme twice... at least not in a row... so now we need suggestions as to how and what.
i myselve have 1 suggestion i would like all your opinions on... its kinda the opposite on last theme. i would like to call it "the hardhitters". based around single hard hits. builds like charge, meteor, leaper barb, charged strike etc. come to mind, but i am sure there are many more you can think of. in other words... it doesnt mind how often you hit... as long as the times you do makes for tremendous damage.

Dude that's what I was thinking of last night! Either a Leaper or a Concentration Barb for one bit hit!
I wouldn't mind making a Phoenix Striker Assassin...alll those charges built up (throwing in some TS and maybe use Venom or something) leads to one big smack!

I would like and try a sorcy for once, was thinking about an enchantress... Or perhaps a support sploder again, but a little better built then my first KTA char...

I like the hard smack idea - was thinking of maybe a poison dagger necro build - massive fire and forget or maybe a boner build.

sounds like an interesting idea, although I have the impression that quite a lot of builds would be common to the last session (fire bear, for example) - the only thing I could think of that hasn't been discussed before was something along the line of getting a team through to hell Baal using only white gear, but that would make the end stages somewhat slow, with nothing to do with all that phat lute we would get. Would certainly be a challenge, using only 20 skills, bad resists etc - on mature reflection, maybe not such a good idea after all ...
Alternatively, we could go for a group that does little in the way of physical damage, but rather concentrates only on elemental poonage.
Also, if I've counted correctly, this would then be KTA 18 - wow !!

Kaxe: defenetly go for the leaper over the conc build... conc is rather boring... and a leaper is a lot of fun. go read the fleying bayooka (or however you write it) guide, should be in the barb forum i think.
oOmpie: Im should be more of a problem with this theme then i was on our last... we should have plenty of non physical melee power to do it with. btw... as for your build... why dont you go for meteor/enchant? should be both decent support and decent punch yourselve.

Leaper was my 1st though, as Conc is quite boring and I haven't made a Leaper since 1.10 but it was only my first thought...I quite like the idea of a Phoenix Striker depending on what the others decide on to round off the party...but it's looking rather likely I will build one...despite all the hotkeys!

Not a bad theme the hard hitters. I'm not too sure what I'd like to do. A dagger mancer is nice, the charged strike amazon is tasty. Would a pure bone necro qualify? A zerker, the tiger strike, dragon tale assa packs a punch. The enchantress would also be a very welcome addition.
The leaper sounds like fun what with all that stun too. I can't make my mind up at this stage.
I'll see what other peoples preferences are.

Sign me up! Was thinking of making a Zerker if there won't be too many barbs in the team. Otherwise i can make a Avenger with some points in different def auras for support.

I'm kinda unsure I want to be there every single week, so I'll take the first reserve slot for now. If you don't fill up, I'll likely be present more than not anyways.
I'm thinking either a (fishy or dragon tail) tiger strike assassin or maybe an avenger. I know the latter is great for the team, but can anyone tell me from experience if they are as dull to play as they are rumored to be? A third alternative is a firewall / thunderstorm sorc.
Whichever it'll be, count me in.

Yeah dude your right...I still have that lvl 34 (or 36) assassin with BoS, Venom and a fast bow! I'd definately play that build again...
Off the top of my head there were: freezealot, two barbs and two shapeshifters last time around with only few ranged guys. Which worked fine, but still... no thank you.
I'll throw this in once again, since it got a few positive replies earlier:
Anyone else think it would be fun to create the next round's characters on fresh accounts and randomly exchange the characters among the players from week to week?
The best character team would probably be one where each character fulfills a distinctly different roll, no two characters play much alike.

Nest, you asked how boring an Avenger can be.
I'm currently using an avenger in the ESU. Mostly he follows the group around spreading his green disease and taking random shots at whatever isn't cleaned up by the Frozen Orb / Hurricane combo our Sorc and Druid have put together.
Sometimes I think I should have been a Healer w/ Conviction as I just end up standing back, out of the action. I'm basically just an Aura Merc whose weapon has been taken away so he doesn't kill himself. :smiley:
In order to kill the boredom, I've been wearing 50% FRW gear so that I can just run around in the middle of the enemy packs, making them bunch up and shoot at me instead of my teammates. Because I'm moving so fast, I rarely get hit and it takes the pressure off the mercs and casters. I guess you could call me a ForrestGumpadin.
Don't get me wrong. Vengeance is a great skill, but it's hard to get your hands on a decent attack speed, high-damage, one handed weapon in a twink-free environment. If I were doing it again, I'd go for Zeal instead and try to pick up high elemental damage weapons and charms; it would free up a lot of points for support skills and make me feel more useful.

We've got indecision on what to do next. We could also go down the route of a KTA female all stars, Sorcs, Assas and Amazons only. No BO and no Oak! Build choice is your own. That could get tricky.
I do like the hits hard theme though. Is the jury out on a pure bone necro?

Tbh I don't really care, as long as I get my weekly dose of DII with you guys it's all good :)
I actually like the idea of swapping chars, but since we are always operating in a pretty small timeframe I think a run like that will be slower than usual since it probably takes people time to get acquainted with the char every week and probably remapping keys etc... Unless people start investing some time outside the run into the KTA chars.
Could try and take the actual Single player choose your poison tourney kind of setup to try that... Swap accounts after finishing an Act or something and give a week or so to finish an Act.
So far I like the hardhitter team and all female team best for regular Monday play. I really dig the swapping idea but like I said I am worried about spending too much time getting acquainted with chars, etc.

The swapping has got potential but there's also the potential for accidental deeds! I personally would struggle with a new char each week as I only play D2 on Monday nights. But democracy rules as it did last night so I will go for whatever the majority vote for.
Didn't we do the girl power about 2 KTAs ago? Sounds very familiar ...
I find myself in the same boat as Turps - Monday night is about the only time I play D2 anymore. The swapping idea is certainly new for KTA, but the chance for deeds does sky-rocket, especially when you think that the single player tournament had some people who actively tried to give the next person a char that was just destined to die. For some strange reason, the word 'Brak' is now in my mind :-) Also gives us the new 'problem' of what to do with the chars afterwards.
I was in a team once that tried to go through with just amazons (and a BO barb), but we're not that woosy and don't need a smelly barb. I'm sure there are enough different builds to make this work. iirc, there was a limitation that all zons had to use big hurty sticks as did the (act 2) merc - made for some great screen-shots.
The final thoughts for me is that I really don't mind what we do, as long as we have fun doing it.

wow... 1 evening not at the forum and 20+ poosts suddenly.
one thing by another, here comes my reply:
1. someone stated that in an earlyer version someone build a charger? that was me... and i must say that it probably was the moost fun character i ever played. works wonderfully as well untwinked as all you realy need to make it work is bonesnap or a decent insight. if we go hard hitters this is one hell of a character and it would be a total shame if we didnt have one. actualy it was so much fun that if noone builds it... i probably will (even dough having played 1 not to long ago).
2. leaper barb: this baby i have played i think in kta 6 or the like. (we are now in 18 mind). i remember it to be a fun character and BY far its strangest point is the lvl 20 leap. it is, and please take me serious, THE BEST crowd controll skill in the entire game. a series of quick small hops and all monsters are glued to the walls unable to do a thing and free to be smacked on. leap attack itselve is not the easyest skill to work with, and AR could be a major problem (what ofc. would be solved right away with an enchantress). still a mojorly fun character to play, and here fits the same conclusion. if noone plays it... i might (again).
3. theme's:
the all woman thing we did 2 or 3 KTAs back. we could do this again at some point in the future but not this soon again. btw... to help you remember... it was called "girl power".
the swopping characters sounds (and probably is) fun, but judging by several reactions will be inefficient timewise and takes to long to be acustomed with each time. also dyings etc could spell more trouble then usual. all in all i think this is a good plan... but not for us.
the all ranged theme i still like, but was frowned upon last time this was suggested... i think we should probably save this theme for a next round.
then finaly the all glass canon theme... problem here is that i can't think of any build that realy benifits of this buildwise other then a bow using strafer/multishotter. any spellcaster wouldnt work and a glass canon melee build sounds like suicide.... specialy untwinked. i might have this wrong.. please correct me in this case.
all in all i suggest that we stick to the hard hitters theme for now.
4. about comming monday: i was actualy hoping that we could start up and finish at least act 1 with our new session. lets hear some more opinions on this please.

He posted about a Tk/ES Nova build for the 'Girl Power' idea, not sure if he want's to carry that over into 'Hard-Hitters' but he's in fo sho dude!
Have settled on my Phoenix Striker Assassin...KTA-Athame will be her name...hmm...deja vu (Bowasin was called that!)
EDIT: Oh 'turps, my first ever KTA char was a Bone and Nova build, but severely hampered itself as you obviously have to pump Bone or Poison to be good; I ended up being a curse support and 'sploder Necro mostly! Pure Bone is rocking when twinked...should be fun untwinked but you will tear your hair out for Insight if you use Spirit!

i have had in mind stuff like a charger, FA zon and leaper... wich i have all played before. ofcource all are fun but i would like some better stuff. i have been thinking about a fireball sorc, a fireclaw bear and even a blizz sorc. and aldough all seem some kinda fun.. none has totaly grabbed me so far and makes me totaly WANT to build him/her.
i need some suggestions from you lot folks... the crazyer the better... but she/he would need to be viable of cource... as i dont wanna be just some onlooker... i wanna pack a serious punch.
help me out guys... where to go what to do?

Hurricane isn't THAT laggy if you compare with like javazons launching LF's at crowds or summonnecros. And since we don't have any build which will cause some badass lag, i think you could go with hurricane. It also works great for slowing down crowds. And we could really make use of oak together with bo.
I would like to take part, im on half term next week so I am free on Monday night.
I've noticed all places have been taken, so put me down for No.10 the reserve spot please :)
Build - Dont know atm, might make a tornado druid.
Lastly, are these chars tagged KTA?

first things first... i guess you didnt read the whole thread, but spot 10 is (for now) reserved for tartanasia. he needs to say if he wants to take that spot or not, and if he does we are all full. (i dont think its a good idea to take more then 2 reserve spots... would mean that you would almoost never, if ever, played.
as for builds... in my last poost i stated that i am moost likely going for the windy druid (tornado that is). and since having 2 exactly the same builds is a bad idea i dont think you should be doing 1 as well.
about tags: yes these characters are all called KTA-insertnamehere
well, if we're doing big hitters, then a titan wolf seems to be a must.

ps - the only thing I find annoying about windies is the hurricane - can't see to well under all those swirling leaves. Haven't noticed lag problems.

Just make sure you have good resistances and poison reduction...my poison res was 0 in hell and I had no reduction time...THAT was what was killing me...even with my 44 light res and huge life pool I could tank souls with a Feral charge-up then Fury a pack...poison is not to be underestimated! :shocked:
I don't mean to put you off waflob, just thinking.. with the skill ed from fury, might and probably another aura from a paladin or HoW, those 150-250% ed you get out of a titan might not be very noticeable. I guess some 20% damage increase.
For my build I'll try my first kicksin, that is tiger strike / dragon tail, with death sentry support. 4th skill to be decided as we go.
I haven't put this through a skill planner, but I can see what you mean. I was just talking to a former KTAer yesterday, who had done one of these and found it a very fun build. Something in excess of 10k fury damage, I think she said. Seemd to fit the theme well :-)
Another thought I had was a lite sorc. I *think* lite has the biggest max damage, but that is offset by a small min damage. Haven't made a pure lite sorc yet, so maybe that would be more interesting - I dunno.

Well I'm doing max ES/TK Sorc and for the general fun I will max Light Nova and Frost Nova too; put some mastery with that and some FCR on and lets boogy!

Light sorc is indeed the highest max hitter as far as I know.

thanks for the summary turps, as far as i van tell its acurate. Looking at it i noticed that we lean quite heavily towards physical dmg... dont we? however just the presence of an enchantress will offset this BIGTIME, as almoost all characters and all mercs will be doing fire as well.

about the start: i was hoping we would be starting comming monday... so lets assume we do. lets just see who turns up in channel at our time with a lvl 1 and then see where to go. specialy the first act(s) are easy to catch up, and there will always be help available should the need arise.
also... lets start thinking about cool names... for my windy i was thinking something like KTA-GailForce12 (won't fit... will it?) or KTA-Superfarter... maybe KTA-Whooosh. let me hear what you like and dont stop your own creativity here guys.

I have played one once, but to be honest, found the leap bug to be totally annoying to the point of abandoning the char. Once you can no longer leap, the only option left to you is to exit the game and re-enter. Gets boring really fast :-(

Your windy should be called KTA-iEatPrunes, KTA-PruneAddict, or something similar. The word 'prune' has to be there somewhere :-)

leaping bug? did i miss anything? aren't you confused with the charge bug? or is almoost everything in this game bugged?
btw... if a leaper realy is bugged... go for a charger... if you make him 2 handed you dont get the problems with holy shield that occur there and he is a blast to play. if untwinked i would advise you NOT to go fully pfysical but maybe add light or cold aura for some elemental add.
Waflob... you should play what you like... looking at the list again doesnt make me feel we ONLY have phys or something. the assa will do any type of dmg, the zerker/avenger knows no immunity, the sorc will be cold/light anyways and enchant will add LOADS of fire dmg everywhere. i played a Full light sorc in last KTA however... and she does work quite well. go where your insinkt tells you to go.

Think i've made up my mind. Zerker sounds like a much better alternative than avenger, although you won't get those great support auras :/
Considering that most chars in this session will do phys damage, the conv aura wont help that much. Besides, barbs has more hp than palas and looks cooler with those muscles :grin:

I hear you Tika, maybe I'll abandon the leaper.
I've never made a charger in all this time so it might be an option. I'll have a look at the possible builds. Not that fussed about only physical damage. My only concern would be getting iron maiden cast on me charging into the chaos sanctuary. No amount of purples are going to help me there.
I was looking at the prospect of a daggermancer. Poison explosion is a very damaging spell and with a paltry extra 6 levels of plus skills can dish out 16-18K damage. Does poison count as hitting hard though? Everyone loves a few support curses and a gumby.
leaping bug? did i miss anything? aren't you confused with the charge bug? or is almoost everything in this game bugged?
I'm not 100% sure of the cause, but something happens and when you click to leap, nothing happens. Also happens with leap attack, but separately. In other words, if leap fails, then leap attack will still be ok. After a while, that will also fail and then you're stymied.
Prune? what does that mean?
Meant as a noun, not a verb. A prune is a dried plum, very well known for its certain 'effects'.

I've been reading SSoG's splendid guide on PvM Chargadins.
I think the Conviction charger looks like an all round winner. With an enchantress too it will be a very helpful companion for the party with the juicy hitting them hard charge. A quick switch to vengenace for Physical immunes and IM and it looks like an all round winner. It's a shame that I'm not on Monday as I'm not sure how a charger will cope with Andy. I'll shout if I need a hand.
If we're not having an enchantress then I'll swap the charger to an enchantress.

Soundcheck will return. Currently level 19 means, that after 5 more painful slow levels he will get rushed back and this time he has not wasted all those skillpoints for active fighting skills. :grin:

As I'm not on Monday I have created KTA-PingPong and he is sitting at level 15 after just completing Radament. That's pretty much where you guys should be after the first session.
I must confess I've never played a charger before and he's great fun. He's a total mana whore though which is making things tricky but I've already got over 100,000 gold so that should buy me enough mana potions. Not one unique or set item dropped and he's now using a Claymore with base 13-37 damage which was shopped. Hope you guys have better luck!
It was difficult to stop playing him so I've now made another charger KTA-Pongbipbop which I'm going to have a play with and maybe twink him a bit with stuff that Spinnywizz found.

oh and ivan... that will work quite well once we get a decent Bo going and we have some insight to back it up... but OMG mana drain will be dangerous...
it is a very easy build however... with no res to worry about (works after Eshield) i am looking forward to see her go!

Wishing you a successful evening tonight everyone! Shame I cannot be there but I'm just finishing work and going to the pub so it's not all that bad!
If anyone finds a bad *** high damage 2 handed weapon let me know (more than 13-37 base damage!)
Also I have a +3 oak sage wolf helm too which was found by my KTA char but I forgot to mention it. I'll make sure that I'm around next week and let any druids have it.
It will be interesting to see what you all go for in the end.
