I plan on mfing chaos with my new sorc and just wondering if I should make an infinity in a normal polearm or an elite? To avoid the whole iron maiden problem..
If normal polearm, what do I do if I come across a monster that has unbreakable lightning immunity?

1st Part: Eth for even lower reqs and looks I think. If you wish to wield it yourself later on you wont have any issues with eth anyways since you're just casting.
2nd Part: Cries would be one answer :)
Think it's enough with cb and the semi-low damage to let the merc kill them. They're not that common anyways.

Ignore it, and go kill something else. If it is a seal boss, then CB will be your best friend.

ooh responses
So infinity in scythe (I may randomly use it if I feel like dueling)
Eth rockstopper
Eth gbane?
I was going originally give it some leech but apparently he has too low of a damage to see a difference?
Since I made a light sorc not long ago.....
Her merc uses an eth infinity CV (only thing I could find and I was feeling impatient ) - Chaos is a freaking nightmare. I usually make 3-4 trips to town per chaos run. (sometimes more, depending, the worst run I had, I think I made over 10 trips to town to res or clear IM from my merc) I eventually gave up and now I only do pit/baal runs solo in duel/chaos games. (so I get 7 other players)
If you intend to do anything other than chaos runs with her, you might want to consider not making Infinity in a scythe, since being able to kill unbreakable LI's and being able to leech is lovely, it's either that or feed him pots constantly. If you are just doing chaos runs then go for it. The stupid caster seal boss (who's name I can't remember at the moment) can spawn with both unbreakable LI and PI, so no CB will help you there. After watching my merc (literally) spend 5 minutes poking a PI/LI seal boss in a three player game I considered making Rift for him. No idea if it would work though, since I've been avoiding chaos unless I get a good long game where I can run baal/pits/trav and still have people in the game. (duel games are perfect, plus people occasionally try to hunt you down, which is fun )
Just a thought anyway, can anyone who does chaos runs a lot shed some light on what to do when that little bugger spawns LI/PI?
If you do go with a Scythe, then an eth Rockstopper/eth GBane (or a Levi/eth shaft for %DR) would be good. I assume you are getting a defiance merc? And no, I wouldn't worry about leech if he is doing <100 damage a poke.

I just might make it in my eth cv
What armor/helm combo you use? eth andy and eth fort?
At the moment I use a non-eth andy's and an eth fort in a hellforge plate (got lucky with my cubing  the fort has 3.6k defense)
At some point I would like to upgrade to an eth andy's socketed with a IAS/fire res jewel.
Once chilling armor triggers my merc has 26k def and with BO he has 4k~ life so he's pretty hard to kill by anything short of an extra strong/might enchanted Lister (who one shotted him, I think BO wore off though...) or IM. Personally, I like baal runs better then chaos since you get very good experience from it. My sorc finally hit 93 so I did some crafting and WSK is a level 85 area so if you are bored and kill things on the way down you can get some good drops.
My lit sorcs merc wears vamp gaze, eth fortitude, and eth CV infinity.
Giving the choice between a low infinity or high damage one, I would go high damage. You fight way more mobs that don't IM.
Generally Andy's is better then gaze, yes, you lose the % DR, but for a CV/CA, you need 35 IAS to hit the 7 frame BP on an act 2 merc. That's andy's socketed with a 15 ias jewel  That increases his attack speed from 9 frames to 7, which is generally worth the loss of the % DR.
And in the end, a low damage infinity is ONLY if you just do chaos runs or make it in a scythe because you want to duel sometimes.

my god! I regret making it in an eth cv
I had to literally revive my merc 8 times for one clean run.
Revive 1-2 if i aim for seal bosses and diablo only.
Do solo baal runs or pit runs. Either should be perfectly doable in full games and no IM.
The other thing is, it takes some time to get used to being trigger happy with the teleporting. You *have* to pay constant attention to what curses are being cast and if you hear the little IM noise tele in the other direction.

Make it in a eth elite polearm weapon, it gives better resale value if you want to trade it sometime in the future.
For IM problems, use eth Gaze and eth Upped Shaftstop. Socket them with Um or Res jewel and/or perfect rubies(more life). With the ~50%dr, your merc will survive 2-3 hits before you have to full rev pot him. My merc havent died in ages in CS, but you have to watch him.

I totaly agree with you... I don't get why people complain about merc dieing xx times in a run... You are a sorc after all! Just tele back and kill OK's first. If you tele near them, they usualy cast Decrepify so it's easy to deal with them.
Even an eth gaze/eth shaft wont save your merc from IM. In an eth elite polearm mercs do 3k~ top-end damage. Against IM, that's enough to one/two shot themselves. (in my experience) And with Fort, forget it. My merc does 6k top-end damage, he instantly kills himself if he gets IM'd.
Raskah, it's a pain anyway  I hate having to tp to town to res my merc every minute or so on a bad run. Someone here said that tele-bombing the OK's helps, since at close range they tend to cast decrep instead of IM. I've used this myself, and it does seem to work, of course, you have to be able to survive doing it. And it's based on observation, no hard data to back it up.
If you do tele-bomb, make sure you have max res and a lot of life (or block). My sorc has 2k life and close to max res (no block) and her life can drop fast if there are too many monsters around the OK.

My merc does 2.6k damage(which is enough to kill the few immunes, when conviction doesnt brake them). As said, in my experience, those 2-3 hits, gets you enough time to give him a full rev pot, which ofc saves his life and saves you from alot of tps to town. Imo, this is the best setup when doing CS runs(except the FaithRogue, but thats for a different build)
