View Full Version : Stupid little question - magic and sockets

Can magic items have sockets? I think I've seen them. If so:

Does a magic, socketted item appear gray or blue? If it's gray, is it worth picking up all the grays in a cow level, just to see if they happen to be magic too?

You can't pick up magic items with socketeds. I am not sure, but perhaps it is possible to roll a random magic item with socketeds with the cube recipe.

If it's a grey item, it is socketed, and not magic at all.
Is it a blue item you find, it's magic, and can't have any socketeds (in classic that is. In lod you have mechanic's, artisan's and jeweler's prefix who add sox to your items)

Magic Items are barely of any value in classic, it's rares and some unique/set's that have any value. You can get a socketed in a rare item with a cuberecipe involving a soj (stone of jordan). These soj's are very hard to find, and therefore you only make socketeds in very good rare items ;).

If you find magic(blue)/unique(gold)/set items(green)/body armor With socketeds, you can be sure those socketeds were given by a hack. On these forums we don't like this hack.

magic weapons can have sockets via a cube recipe. (either the sojs one, or the other one)

magic shields and armors from what I recall can only have a single socket via the soj cube recipe (I haven't personally tried this) or via the act 5 exploit that was previously patched. Sheilds under this method can have up to two sockets, and armors depending on type up to 4 sockets.

so, while you may in fact see them in game on other characters (e.g. they are not necessarily in fact trade window hacking) they did not have a legitmate means of creating said items socketed

Trade window hacking? What's that? (no, I'm not asking how to do it).

to my knowledge, I haven't ever seen it in action. essentially there is a rumored way to make an item appear to be in the stash that actually is not there.

the obvious purpose is to do a bait+switch on what you are offering for trade.

I've only heard about it however so I can't verify if it ever really happened as I described it. I was just mentioning that it's very feasible that you may find gear on ladder even, that would normally not be possible to acquire.

when the a5 hack first broke publicly on ladder season 3 this forum was full of a lot of disinformation from people that steadfastly refused to believe it was going on (e.g. threads regarding socketed uniques, etc) - all insisting that it must have been trade window hacking, etc.

regardless that's probably enough on the subject. acknowledging that Act5 took place is one thing. carrying the discussion to the point of making it easier to google is another, and not my goal at all.
