Smite question

I'm building a smiter and was wondering, if I'm using smite as my main attack and have last wish as weapon, will I be able to benefit from the life tap or crushing blow? Does the weapon need to be in use?

Yeah both. But the weapon must be active to gain the bonuses, so not on switch.
