View Full Version : Best MF areas in Classic
What are the best MF areas for a Summoner/CE necro in Classic? I find that I'm able to move pretty fast in Nightmare, but very slowly in Hell (mainly tried act2 open areas).
I tried three few Pit runs last night (act 1, near the monastery) and got no uniques at all, even with 300% MF. Then I did Tristam for fun, and got Magefist right away. I've had luck with certain outdoor areas in act2, probably because I can move through them so quickly and kill so many monsters that something's bound to drop eventually.
Andy gave me uniques once, so I guess I was glitched (this was long after I finished all acts in nightmare), but I went after her twice more, and got nothing. I guess I unglitched somehow.
Are there better areas to hunt in nightmare? Are there summoner-friendly areas in hell?
Probably an often-discussed topic, but I couldn't find anything on it in the build guides or the first few pages of posts...
seems like ray managed to find some items with his summon/ce necro on hardcore by doing cows - a chant on your summoned minions would obviously make that task a bit easier, and possibly even negate the need to use CE.
regardless the build really isn't one of the more useful/common mf builds as evidenced by how rarely one ever sees it...
I'm new to MF. I just randomly decided to turn my summoner into an MFer, and found that he tears through most any area in nightmare, but not nearly as fast as an orb or blizzard sorc. In NM cows, he kills so slowly that the other players negate most of his MF and take most of his drops. I should see whether I can create cow games with the char, and make private cows.
I have a level 72 sorc with maxed blizzard and meteor, and respectible support skills. I think she has +2 on all skills, and does about 1200 cold (plus maybe 10 mastery) or 2500 fire. Would it make more sense to use her as my MFer, even given that she's a baroness (finished hell)?

to be brutally honest and blunt it would make the most sense if you remade a sorc as a dedicated quest glitcher. That being said if you are on east you'll be running into an awful lot of competition these days. There is also that pain of trying to gear/level a new character to level 30 where most seem to get their "kill shot" attack - be it a WW barb, or orb/blizz, etc. depending on char type.
another option if you are essentially just restarting is to make fred's java/cowazon that is in the build section that I personally have not made, but supposedly is useful for getting commonly requested mid to high level uniques and such.
re: your baroness sorc, she could in theory net you a decent items if you are adept at teleporting and seal popping for one of the various and many high level 9x lord's that still cs these days and if you happen to be faster and more accurate at clicking than a commonly used itemgrabber/hack is.
the single most valuable item I found this season was after my restart in late november/early december and was a blue 30/20 priz grim shield with decent defense that I traded for 3 sojs, and a pruby socketed bplate. This item was snagged by my lvl 8x barron hammerdin in a game full of level 9x lords, and it was sheer luck that the various folks in the game had full packs when it fell.
ultimately where/how you play is up to you and how you gain fun from the game.
Best mf area in Classic is Hell Cs. Close thread.

pits are pointless in classic. Unlike in LoD such areas don't get a higher alvl than nearby areas. Cut back on your mf if it will help your killing speed. I assume you're using something like tarn/gull/milabrega/chancies/mf jewelry/gskin/rare 2x mf boots.
Then I did Tristam for fun, and got Magefist right away. I've had luck with certain outdoor areas in act2, probably because I can move through them so quickly and kill so many monsters that something's bound to drop eventually.
Pure chance on the mfist. You shouldn't be so concerned about uniques though, rares are more worthwhile.
Andy gave me uniques once, so I guess I was glitched (this was long after I finished all acts in nightmare), but I went after her twice more, and got nothing. I guess I unglitched somehow.
You can't unglitch. You can tell if Andy is not glitched by observing whether she ever drops blues which have standard durability, cash or potions. A summoner can't hope to compete with a sorc for boss running anyway.
Are there better areas to hunt in nightmare?
Very valuable items, for some item types at least (like boots), can drop in nm but you're generally better off mfing in hell for the additional chance to get stuff like the 60 life, 30 strength mods and improved chance of exceptional versions such as mp, grim and weapons.
Are there summoner-friendly areas in hell?
Don't really know but I'd imagining soloing hell flayers and council in games with 1 or 3 players would be some of your best options. CS could also be ok.
I assume you're using something like tarn/gull/milabrega/chancies/mf jewelry/gskin/rare 2x mf boots.
I'm using:
Chance Guards (36%)
Goldwrap (30%)
Tancred armor+amulet (78%)
3soc helm (75%)
Rare boots (24%)
Nagel rings (29% and 30%)
Rare shield with resists (no mf)
Wand with +skills (no mf)
That's 299% total. I have a tarnhelm (found it lying around unidentified, in an abandoned cows game), but I use the 3soc instead. I've never managed to acquire a gull or gskin.
You shouldn't be so concerned about uniques though, rares are more worthwhile.
Interesting. I guess that explains why hell MF is so much better than NM. The modifiers on rares are better. See? Told you I was new to MF. :)

Well I did Andy once (after the initial quest) and found something like three uniques, and no potions. The next time I did it, I found almost all potions and cash. So if it's impossible to unglitch, then I was exceptionally lucky the first time.

I don't think this character could handle hell council or cs, but he might be able to manage flayers. The basic trouble I have in hell is that my skeletons can't kill anything. They last a while, but without that first kill, I can't use CE.
Maybe I'll play around a little more with this char, and then make a real MF character - orb sorc or item find barb, or that cowazon.
Perhaps switching to sigon shield, a garbage +2 nec amu and the tarnhelm would give your skeles the necessary oomph, for p1 hell flayers at the very least. You'd have to be careful around trav without decent cres on a nec but in other places as long as they don't have gloams res shouldn't be very important. Upgrading stuff like your rings would be a lot more expensive though. Armour could be replaced with a rare dual res + whatever or twitch.
In classic blizz is imo better than java for hell cows, tho not nm cows.
Garbage +2 amulet? Where would I find one of those? :)
I've been playing for six months or so, and I've never seen a +2 amulet. Where do these things come from? I've also been very unlucky with armor (except for rattlecage), but I guess I could trade for that.
+3 to skills from tarn+amulet would certainly help. I also have a SOJ on another char, but I'm not sure I want to give up the 30% MF.

Pretty staright forward answer, ignoring anything and everything about character choice.
The three best areas to magic find: Andy, Meph, and Diablo.
Now that of stated the obvious without really helping at all... have fun!

Trade for the +2 amulet. A bad rare, say a +2 nec with 35 total res and 1-2 other unpopular mods, would likely be charsied so you shouldn't have trouble getting hold of one for cheap. Afaik Diablo is the only way to get them if you don't have a char level 86+. With 300 mf you'll have approx a 3% and a 5% better chance of an item that drops being a unique (or failed unique) or rare item respectively vs 270 mf, I imagine the killing speed increase from the extra skill (plus the healthy mana, and therefore mana regeneration, boost) makes the soj superior.

I'll add, that if one prefers a mart barb, that people have reported good drops over the years from treewood, stormwood, raki, boneash and what's his face just up the stairs from the arcane waypoint.
I'll add that I have spent some time in the past mfing enduku that flayer boss in level three of the flayer dungeon - one effectively gets multiple kills/urks from taking him out as the first kill takes out the top guy, then the 2nd guy underneath is also a boss.
while nothing "uber" I did find some very nice gloves/boots over the years when I was exclusively a barb pvm/mfer.
final thought, some folks like to mf dury - I have found the drops to be hardly worth the time, but at lower levels definitely worth the xp. best finds from her were gull / hotspurs on separate games. more typically it's a host of blue items and something like cathans/irathras if memory serves correctly
