Avenger merc question

Hi all
Was just wondering what to equip my merc with.
It's an avenger build lvl 75. the merc is might. Gonna equip him with doom that's for sure...
Wanted to know which polearm is best for that cause and why, and besides that-thich armor and helm to equip him with. will an eth upped shaftstop and a high gaze be the best he can get? TY in advance :thumbsup:

On the merc I'd suggest a couple options :

Act2

either Holyfreeze if your lacking crowd control , or a defiance one to hit big defense
your using doom , so even a might isnt a bad option. Try em out and see what you like

For the wep , I'd suggest a Rift Cryptic axe or Giant theshers which is the best hurty stick for act 2's These provide the best damage over time.

Armors are pretty open Treachory, Duress (ow/cb more damage), Shaftstop (dr, life) , fort(res, damage, chilling armor) or stone (over 3K defense, fhr , res) are all pretty solid choices.

The helm you need Life leach , so a Talmask, Vampgaze, or Crown of theives rank right up there

Since you have conviction on, You could also consider a Voice of reason (eth balrog blade is shexy) Act5 Barb with arreats and treachory armor. This gives good damage, and crowd control.. Looks pretty cool too :P


For the ga plate socket simply find what your lacking
The very best option is 15ias/15 res , or a rare jewel with great stats , besides these try

Um rune for res if you need it
Sheal for missing Fhr

I'm not a "pro" by any means, but I've done many avengers/conviction zealots mostly on Hardcore mode and guardian'd them all.

First of all, Thx for the quick and detailed reply.
I don't think u misunderstood some of the things. I already HAVE the merc for a while now, and he IS might. I was planning HE will use doom, not me. I'm using a Pskulle'd Baranar and it's doing a gr8 job so far, even in hell.
U did help me a lot, but the thing is that u gave me too many answers.
u see, I think I couldv'e come up with many possibilities for good merc armor and helm if I were to give enough thought to it. I'm trying to get a solid opinion about which gear shows the best results in battle, pvm as well as pvp.
I'm posting this here because I need the opinions of experienced avenger players, such as you. Guess I just need to hear some more expert avenger players opinions... Thank you for the help, though.

I'm not entirely sure what your question is either. From your first post, I thought you wanted to equip your char with a Doom too.

Anyways, about the merc... Use the weapon speed calculator (http://diablo2.ingame.de/tips/calcs/weaponspeed.php?lang=english)to see if your merc needs to use an eth Treachery. Treachery is a really good armor for the 45% ias, fade, fhr. You can see what bp's he will be hitting with different base polearms/ias combinations.

If I had my merc's IAS covered, I'd put an eth Shaft/Leviathon on him. And, 90% of the time I'll use a Gaze on the merc. GL!

I'd personally prefer something other than might, but that can still be useful. It's not too late to switch mercs, as it only matters which difficulty you purchase them, not what level they were on when you purchased them.

I would personally choose a Holy Freeze merc with Rift (awesome source of damage), Treachery (as mentioned great IAS, plus Fade [60 resists, 15% damage reduction], FHR, and some nice poison damage from Venom), and finally Delirium (what? derlirium? some pretty nice mods, but the most important is 11% ctc Confuse which totally nullifies most threats and turns them on eachother).
