Hey There, This is my first ever guide

Introduction

Ever been in a game where you are the only one with the Crap gear, bad skills, and doing thing that others wont dream of, well to tell you your not alone. You dont need the best gear in the game, you can have the worst gear and heck, still kill a guy with the best gear
So in this Guide you will find:

The Smiter and who he is;

The Skills of the Smiter;

Your style of play;

The Use of the Smiter;

And the best bit:
The Poor Man' Clothes

The Smiter and who on Earth he is.

The Smiter is a Palading who uses Smite as his Main attack and the Usally a Fanaticism. This is one of the only chacters who can do the Uber Tristam in Solo, and in a few Minutes, but that something I am not going to discuss in this guide, since Frankly this is a Poor Man's Guide.
Many use the smiter to solo bosses and PvP, but many too use it for PvM, as the Smiter, Over level 68 is a Chacter who can go many ways.

The Skills of the Smiter
Skills
The Smiter uses 3 main skills: Holy Shield, Smite and the Fanaticism aura.
the Skills are used because of:

Smite: Stuns target, does damage, and why would a smiter use smite, hmmmm I wonder

Holy Shield: Increases the Defence of your Smiter and the damage you do using smite and also the chance to block.

The Fanaticism Aura: Increases damaga, attack speed and attack rating for you AND your Party, this is a awesome skill, truly without this the smiter wouldnt be a smiter.

After that you can invest into anything you like, most go for Vigor or Charge to make runs easier, I Personnely went for Vigor, and now i can do baal in 4-5 minutes, without lagg

So in the end you should have:

20 Smite
20 Holy Shield
20 Fanaticism
8 into skills which you need to get in oder to unlock Holy Shield and Fanaticsim.

Stats

The Smiter is a charcter which relys on life and Max block to stay alive, so i will explain what you need in oder for that:

Strenght: Makes weapons do higher damage, and allows you to use armor, since most of them have STR requirements. About 160 is all you need.

Dexterity: Increases attack rating and chance of blocking, About 120 is needed here.

Vitality: Increases life and Stamina, This is Vital for most chacters, so all points remaining should be dumped here.

Energy: Increase Mana. The last thing a paladin needs is mana, no points here at all, only if your having trouble with mana put 10 points into it, but your waiting your time here.

So in the end of this Section you'll have:

Skills:
20 Smite
20 Holy Shield
20 Fanaticism
8 Pre-Skills.

Stats:

160 Str - Requirements for armor
120 Dex- Max Block
XXX- Vitality , all dumped used points dumped here
15-25 energy, no use for it at all.

At level 70, you'll have to make a choice, between the skills your going to use next.

Your style of play

Until level 20, put no points into anyhting else but smite, until 38 everything into Holy Shield, and at 39+ get max Fanaticism and at 63 finish maxing Holy Shield.

Your basic style of play is to hit and kill, or in a smiters case, Smite and kill.
Just keep whacking your shield at them until they die, they cant do nothing since everytime you smite them the get stunned and cant respond :P, Remeber though, smite doesnt work on Super Uniques, Bosses and Uniques, only on normal monsters.

So just to recap, you Smite til they have died.

In PvM just Smite, but in PvP, Smite Harder, and harder til they have died, to tell you the truth, i dont usally PvP, but you can win easily, just kill them, maybe you'll have a better chance then me :jig:

The Poor Man' Clothes

This is the bit in every guide where normal people, not Leggits are sad since we cant aford the gear they make us use, i just use gear which i can aford, and guess what, it works great

So your equipment:

Helm, You would want something with a nice defence and maybe even so other bonuses, go to any act and buy one from the merchants, they may have high prices, but still a normal helmet may be better then a Elite one.

Armor: GrisWolds, the Orante Plate, for a Poor Man is Perfect, costs almost nothing and has very high defence 900+ at level 45 and only requires 110 STR, while it gives you 20 back.

Shield: Stormsheild or a Kurast Shield, Smite damage and some Resistance, StormShield gives you 30 str and has a feature which Reduces Damage by a somewhat number.

Weapon: Any weapon with a +1 or +2 to Paladin Skills would be perfect, since your not going to use it much, a Rust Handle is good for a Poor Man, for me it droped from Mephisto in Nightmare.

Gloves/Boots: You'd Want Ik's Because of the high defence and bonuses.

Rings/Amulet: for them you'd want some resistance or +2/+1 skills, i use Cat's Eye for runs With Ravenfrost so my speed cannot be stopped.

Belt: You'll need a nice belt, witha high defence and somewhat of some bonuses and to put all your 16 life potions.

Invertory: Some Charms which give life to you and some Defence charms, and keep some Mana potions if your Mana runs out.

As this is the end of My Guide, i would like to Thank everyone who helped me build up my paladin, Thank you people for reading this guide and please give me some feedback as this is my first guide, ill be making more soon

Good-Bye

not bad for your first guide
but why wouldn't you invest points into defiance instead of vigor/charge?

Emivem
02-01-2008, 20:43
I really dont know, lol. I personnel went for vigor, more speed for runs, and i usally dont get hit, well i see you do have a point there. Ill try it out.

Remeber though, smite doesnt work on Super Uniques, Bosses and Uniques, only on normal monsters.

Actually, quite to the contrary - Smite is one of the best skills to use against Bosses (and Super Uniques). Though it does not stun bosses like it does with normal monsters.

True, but i meant like it doesnt stun them :P and yes it is probobly the best skill on a Paladin to use against Bosses, and it would be awesome if it did stun them

it's nice to read guides that don't just list all the fancy schmancy, runeworded up the wazoo gear.

just FYI:

Grimborn, an admin at The Amazon Basin (another D2 forum, so I can't give you a link, a quick google search should turn up the complete tale), built a smiter, named: The_Poorman, who successfully completed an uber run through Chaos Tristram with the following equipment.

The Poorman’s equipment

The advantages of The Poorman’s particular combination of items are discussed below, as are several alternate approaches with equally humble gear. Here’s what he takes with him to Harrogath:

Helm__________Iratha’s Crown (socketed with Ort): 60% LR, 30% FR
2nd helm______Plain white crown, socketed with 3 perfect rubies
Ammy__________Rare +1 Paly skills, +1 ENG, +39 Life, +19 All Resists
Weap__________Magic Bone Wand of Life Tap (105 lvl 6 charges), socketed with 2 Shaels
Armor_________Darkglow ring mail (socketed with Ort): +10 all resists, another 30% LR, +5 to Max all resists
2nd armor_____Treachery (Shael-Thul-Lem) breast plate
Shield________White crown shield with +43 all resists, socketed with 4 Pdiamonds, for a total of +119 to all resists
Gloves________Crafted (blood) heavy gloves with 8% crushing blow and +18 life
Ring 1________Raven Frost
Ring 2________Rare ring with 1 STR, 10 DEX, +11 life and +7 to all resists
Belt__________Crafted (blood) belt with 10% Open Wounds, +3 mana and +20 life, all 12 slots filled with fat purple pots
Boots_________Goblin Toe light plated boots (25% cb)
Charms________39 inventory slots are taken with a motley assembly of charms totaling 10% FR, 29% LR, 2 STR, 7 mana and 423 life. The 40th slot is empty
Stash_________A cube (holding the eye, brain and horn to open the portal to Uber Tristram), the second crown helm, the backup armor and four small life charms. Every other slot is filled with Fat Purples

oh yeah, i should mention that this was done in Hardcore. (yes, The_Poorman completed his quest and lived to tell the tale)

I did this poor man smiter last ladder, very nice. Good guide, two little points though:

For even the poorest a Guillomes ( spelling? ) face should be affordable and since smite has kinda low dmg CB is really good as damage substitute. I usually even find one along the way of leveling a new character.

And for a weapon anything that is fast, i love phaseblades for that. Even a normal one would do just great because you damage with your shield and extra skills don't do too much for smite.

My 2 cents.

Don't forget about the life tap wand, you can shop one for around 200 k, which is afordable, even for a poor man.

Thank you, For your first point, well its a good one, but You might be luckier then others to find one, other then that, Cb is awesome for a smiter, :P

Well the results were, well pretty good, but one thing i should mention, The_Poorman was a hc cha, played by a somewhat master, just a little thing, other then that, everything is great :)
:P

for your second point, Smiters use stuff which gives them +1 or more to certain skills, since your not going to use it, and Phaseblade is awesome, truly is. but its dex requirements are pretty high, so meh  But thanks ill try to find out if its anyhow helps.

:P Thanks for reading, The_Poorman is a lucky guy :P hardcore Uber :) but the equipemt isnt everything for a smiter, i mean you could get a decent shield and nothing else and do some good:P Ill see if that works for my Poorman and give you guys some results

You missed a lot of stuff in your guide:

1) If you are going to kill bosses with smite you need crushing blow. Otherwise there is no point in smiting them.

2) You need to cover gear that gives crushing blow. Like strength, black, heavens light, rattlecage etc.

3) The 1 point smitters guide claims that all you need is 1 point in smite. Why do you need a dedicated smitter ?

4) How do you kill hordes of bad guys with smite ? Zeal works much better because you get 5 hits to smites 1.

mixritpitlik
15-01-2008, 12:24
It's a smiter guide, not a zeal/smiter guide.

About the dex, i believe you will reach the 136 dex req if you are going for max block anyway, so Pb's whould be possible.

And To HC, Dedicated Smiters kill faster than 1 pt smiters if you look at poor man's setups.

Emivem

HCKull, Good points but....

Not a Zeal build.
Not a 1pt smite build
Not a Runeworded retro build...

As you can see, its a Poor Man ' SMITER guide....
But still, maybe you read(Past Tense) it wrong...

Mixritpitlik, Good point, just use a high, Common found shield, which gives a *Chance to Block*, But i agree.

I would hate to be a pure smiter in pvm.. especially a poor one at that with no source of leech but lifetap if you have on switch.
Also need a source of cb (Goblin toes) which is alot better than the suggested IK.

There are items that are better and just as cheap

Emivem

Meh, DayDream, good point..... wow, i've gotten stuck in a corner..... Meh

Smiters are Either PvP or PvM but for speacil(cant spell) areas like Uber, GT is good, but it reduces defence, but adds CB..... Cornerd, Ill give you that point.

But then again, this is my Guide, My very First guide.... Meh

Meh.... Cornered, DayDream your right.... :(

Noo! I wasn't trying to corner you or anything with that:cry:
Your guide looks like my first smiter when I first played d2 (got those exact items as freebies in "FREE DROPS" game  ) It did work for awhile but there are definately some better and cheap items out there that would make things alot easier.

Alc

Smiters are Either PvP or PvM but for speacil(cant spell) areas like Uber, GT is good, but it reduces defence, but adds CB.....You lose, what, 70 defence? Honestly that's not even worth mentioning, especially if your armour is providing near the 1k mark - you seem to prioritise defence a bit too high, check the character screen and see how increasing defence changes your stats (obligatory "don't trust the LCS" goes here). Extra resists, sources of life leech/tap, crushing blow etc are typically better investments.

I know this is a "smite only" kind of guide, but it's going to make for very slow PvM. This has already been pointed out, but it needs to be re-stated - attacking one monster at a time makes for pretty dull play, at least for me.

Paladingo
29-01-2008, 16:51
It shouldn't be too slow! Smite carries "on striking" effects so you can get pretty destructive with a fast smite rate.

Ie I have 3 pure smiters now, the latest has crescent moon phase blade, so every smite has chance of making static field or chain lightning. I chew through crowds pretty well. The trick is to take advantage of the 6 second stun length, and stun all the monsters around you so the ones behind can't get to you. Then keep smiting the close ones, so all of them wear static field and chain lightning etc.

Think about some of the equipment you can wear that has "on striking" or "on attack" effects... Then add a perfect 5 second stun length...

Alc
29-01-2008, 16:55
I don't recall any of those effects on his proposed gear. Crescent moon is pretty cheap, though.
