Game crash bug: "UNHANDLED EXCEPTION: ACCESS_VIOLATION (c0000005)

First of all, if this question or bug has been reported before I apologize for posting it again, I searched for it on these forums but couldn't find it.

I got this error a few times now (like once every 5 days) and I'd like to know what's causing this error and possibly how to solve it.

I was just mf'ing a little, and all of a sudden the game freezes and shows this error, after which i have to ctrl+alt+delete to close the game.

I run the game in windowed mode since I play it on a laptop with widescreen, which makes the game run horrible. The laptop I got is a Packard Bell Easynote MB85, currently 5 months old, which is working perfectly fine and is in a great shape. My OS is Vista though, since I didnt have the choice of what OS I wanted when I bought my laptop, I'm stuck with it. I also run D2 in windows XP compatibility mode, otherwise it doesn't work at all.

Imo it's vista that's causing the problem, since I can perfectly run the game on my windows XP computer without any trouble.

Any idea on what's causing this and/or how to solve it?

I am getting this same error, but instead of being in game, it comes up anytime I try to load the game. So I can't even play...? Any ideas?

i am simply giving up on this error...i have done everything the thread says and the last time i crashed and logged back on i was freakin dead..nothing works to solve this error and i mean nothing. i dont understand it.i can play for weeks and not get the error and then i get it 5 times in one night. i give up

i can tell you that all 3 of my crashed tonight came in the exact same place in the game right where eyeback the unleashed is and right when u first step into the arreat plateau. its like i stepped into a new area and the game got confused for some reason? finally after 3 crashes and 2 computer restarts it let me into arreat plateau and now the game is fine. i just dont understand???
