Tiny fps problem - help the noob pls

So,I know I am lagging at some point in the game.
But I can't see my fps.I type in the command /fps ingame,but nothing happens.
Also,unless I run the game in direct draw(2d) the thing is unplayable due to black stripes going on and off across the screen,ocasionally obscuring objects in the game.
Help me please,it really sux not having the netgraph.

You are pressing enter to get the chat box and then typing /fps aren't you?

Are your graphics drivers up to date? How old is that machine?

The machine is quite old...about 5 years actually
Athlon xp 2400+,NVidia GEForce 6600GT,1 GB Ram..Win XP Pro
Recent drivers,about am month old.

You should be able to run it. But did you press enter before entering the code '/fps' or '/frame' ? If not, try if any other code works.

Unlike normal chat text,this does not appear listed after pressing enter.
Bleah,i dont really need it that much.

Dunno, but maybe this option only got available in later patches, assuming here that you don't play later patches..?

sounds like a driver problem

check if there are any updates for your mobo
and uninstall then reinstall and reinstall your nvidia drivers

do other games work ok?

CStrike and Mount and Blade.Work juuust fine.And HL for that thing.
