Firstly, there is a myth that many people believe in which meteor steals exp. Secondly, meteor could cause someone with a bad computer to lag and disconnect. If anyone says something about the first point, ignore him. If someone is getting laggy from meteor, its best to stop.

Build Hammerdin. It's the only B.Net approved build.

Little off topic but this is good to know:

You may encounter C/Is (Connection Interrupted) in several cases. As admante said, meteor lags and has notorious superstition around it (steals exp, which is a lie).

Also, if you play with character, which uses melee attacks, you trigger the forestorm from your Torch. If you have fast melee attack, like strafe-bowazon, you trigger it repeatedly and this causes the game crash. Lightning-javazon does the same, due to high amount of splitting lightning bolts (if you spam javelins to the minion pack) which overloads and crashs the game.

Can you baal yourself? If yes, do what you want. If no, might want to consider what the other people your playing with think, whether or not they have any basis for thinking it. It's just politics.

Play the game and have fun.
Your Fun >Their Fun when other player are unknown
Your Fun = Their Fun when other players are known
The people left more than likely because the bot did. I'd highly doubt they left thier own run because you used a skill in the game.
Baal run with the trang set summon up to max and use meteor. Squelsh the whiners, That's my vote.

Many of you miss the point here.

Meteor and other high speed graphic intensive attacks, like lit fury cause games to crash. In baal runs especially. I know it from personal experience. I can crash any full baal run by spamming lit fury. Normally by the 2nd to the last pack, the game has crashed.

The reason people ask you not to use it because it's making the game unplayable, for everyone including you. They are not trying to 'ruin your fun'. they just want to get xp and be able to play without crashing.

My advice is this, avoid meteor for baal runs, just use another attack, assuming the group can handle it. If they can't, than use it, but try to limit to what's needed.

I haven't run into that problem. I play on a cable modem and a laptop.
It’s not the best setup in the world or a gamer dream.
I have done the same thing to a greater extent with a necro by summoning 15 liches and glooms and going into an Uber run with 5 people on. The chaos from all Meph's summons and mine, with my ce's, my friends amazons lightning fury, my minions meteor spells, my poison novas, smiting, lightning, hammers has never crashed. Then at other times just howling in ubers with just 2 people (smiter and my frenzy barb) has made me lose connection. My conclusion is that it is dependant on the conditions of the server. Servers are intentionally lagged by these friggin people that use a technicality in bnet and a program intended to interfere with game response time to create dupes.

I've spammed meteor in 8 player baal runs with windies, LF, novas, hammers, summons all doing their own thing and haven't dropped.
You are promoting a myth, get a notebook and document your experience and you'll come to a different conclusion.
Make sure to note each time:
What server you are on
The time
#Players and skills being used at time of interruption

If you find a pattern send it to bnet.

BLIZZARD encourages party play, this is evident if you evaluate the formula for exp sharing.
Why would they create an environment that is not conducive of party play if they didn't want players to use their skills?

Why would they create an environment that is not conducive of party play if they didn't want players to use their skills? There are holes in Diablo II's client server system. These holes can allow uses to rollback characters and dupe items. To avoid massive duping (and, really, the corresponding server strain caused by people duping), blizzard has limited the actions that led to the server strain and duping, instead of fixing the holes in their coding that allowed for the duping.

If Diablo II on battle.net was a house, then it would have structural issues in it's frame. Instead of spending the huge amount of time and money it would take to properly rebuld all the walls, Blizzard just rigged up posts and butresses in a few of the rooms. The house is safe now, but it's no longer exactly what was intended and designed.

 I recognized that. I hinted to that in the post but didn't really want to spell it out as far as you did.
(It was meant as a rhetorical question actually)

from meteor i have never dropped, but i have noticed 2 - 3 second lag, primarly on the last two waves.

if you are dropping check your ping times, or your computer.

i am on a 8+mb connection i use the following computers /w no issues.

1. laptop 1.6ghz turion64 / 2gb memory / Ati x700 video card
2. desktop dual core opteron 1210 / 4gb memory / nvidia 8800gts (sadly i can play games like crysis on full, but yet i spend all my time playing diablo)

i am in agreement with massive sin, it was probably at the end of the run, where if they didn't want you with them, the next game they would not do a party invite.

Really, there isn't much reasons to use meteor. The last 2 waves are the ones that are hard, and sadly, they are either highly fire resistant (venom lords) or simply fire immune (minions of destruction). If anything, I would simply spam glacial spikes and let the others kill while guarantee their safety (as a meteorb anyways). The first 3 wave pretty much dies to fire balls anyways, even in higher player counts. Save the meteor for solo runs or Baal himself, where it's actually of a greater use.
