Read somewhere that you start at 14 and can max out at 18.
Read elsewhere that the most you can improve your default setting is +5.
I have no sources, so you're on your own. I think the 14-18 is from an Amazon guide on this site.
Best of luck.

from the arreat summit:
The base Light Radius is 13. The Max Light Radius you can have is 18 so anything more than a net of +5 to Light Radius will not matter.

Too bad it's completely useless in D2, since the darkest place in the game is still lighter than the catacombs in D1.
monster aggroing played a big part in d1, people would try to get -light res to almost cloak themselves , or so i heard.

it was the only way for a warrior to role, 0 light radius, a kings bastard sword of speed/haste, teleport, and stone curse made you a mean lean killing machine

I loved my first D1 Warrior - I found a Grandfather, it was all good in the hood. Flame Wave was my favourite spell too. It made that Chamber of Bone quest (the one where you get the "Guardian" aka Hydra spell) a breeze, you could kill every skeleton in that little room all at once. There was like over 50 skeletons too.
Subjectively
i like a full Nats Set with a Malice runeword on the off-hand for invisibility at all times.
iK Barb seems extra shiny above and beyond the mods, better than all the other extra glow sets.
Edit went back and modded my post for you yetidiah :-) Mom was a english teacher and i love to tweek yah. Sorry

Now you're talking. I remember that room, too. Of course, it was back when I was a complete noob and the only strategy I had was to retreat to the nearest door and just shift click away. I stood at that entrance door for so long just hacking at the skeletons (And hiddens, too).
Is it just me, or did Diablo I have a much better ambiance to it than II & LOD? Everything in that game, at least compared to II, was creepy. I nearly peed my pants when I first heard "Fresh Meat!". Sure it's not as addictive as II but it had a much better feel to it.
i have heard that alot, d1 was SCARY and dark like a horror movie with swords and magic, d2 is an action adventure flick with explosions and zombies!

Haha. Yes, I guess that would be somewhat accurate. Something like Nesferatu then Sean of the Dead.
