May be a little off topic, but what are up'd items? Ok, so I've had some in the past. But are these items duped or hacked or are the legit? If legit, how do you up an item? For example....I've had an up'd vipermagi which was wrymhide instead of serpentskin armor and it had around 980+ def

Up'ing involves using the horadric cube recipe to change the base of an item from normal to exceptional or from exceptional to elite.

Up'ing an item is not hacking or duping it. It is a legit thing you can do. However, I suppose if an item is sought after enough in an up'd form it could be duped.

See the Horadric Cube section of Arreat Summit for the recipes. The link is in my sig.

ive always wondered, what implications does upping an item have on the required level, say bonesnap is a generally good level up weapon for IK barbs, but does upping it make the required level higher?

You take the highest level requirement of the rare/unique item before upgrade and the new base item (War Club for Bonesnap...Ogre Maul if you go all the way to elite), then add 5 for a nomal -> exceptional upgrade and 7 for an exceptional -> elite upgrade (add 5+7 for a double upgrade).

Bonesnap requires level 24, War Club requires 25, Ogre Maul 51.

So a Bonesnap War Club would require level 30, and a Bonesnap Ogre Maul would require level 63.

Also note that the +5, +7, and +12 modifiers would also come on top of the required level of any socketables in the item. A bonesnap War Club with a shael rune (requires level 29), would require level 34. It doesn't matter if the socketable is put in before or after upping.
