I started a hammerdin having heard it was the most powerful character in the game and so overpowered and all that. Now I have discovered it has serious flaws. Hammers are very inaccurate and you can only hit monsters accurately if you tele right on top of them it seems. Also mana draining crowds make it impossible to use hammer often. I must say my javazon was a lot easier to play with and killed much faster and safer. Why everyone say hammerdins are overpowered? They seem rather underpowered.
Most caster builds require insight merc. That will solve mana drain problems.
Great thing about hammers is the bypassing of immunities. One monster out of the whole hell mode is completely immune to its hammers (except for uniques' randomly spawning immunities) No other build has as much freedom with that.

Merc with Eth Fort, Eth Gaze, Eth insight, that should solve mana burn/immune bosses.
Light sorcs, javazons, summon necros, wind druids, all can compete hammerdins killing potential with good enough equipment (however not many builds do 13K+ non resisted damage per cast AND can tank mobs with huge def, resists, fhr, block and life).
I made a pretty cheap one in Hardcore. Per investment he easily outdamages my necro, my sork, and just about everything else. 5k hammers aren't going to impress the general battlenet crowd, but the chrome gets me home.
If you can get past the aiming issues everything else is downhill.

Main drawbacks of the hammer:
1, hard to aim accurately
2. very slow Baal killer
3. Has to fight at melee range and is exposed to enemy mana burners (no mana = no hammers)
Main advantages
1. no immunes (or few at least)
2. Can teleport very fast at 125 fcr, an ideal Baalrun teleporter
I think I have discoved that pretty much all characters I have played so far have strong and weak sides. No characters including the hammer seems overpowered. Its all a matter of whether or not you can live with the drawbacks each build has.

The mana problem can be solved with a insight merc, even the baal thingy can be much faster if your merc has a little cb.
Hammers are quiet overpowered, or atleast, the most.
Counter to drawbacks:
1) Aiming hammers? What for? Just spew out a hammer field at 125% fcr and watch the carnage. If an enemy does manage to sneak through, just move and repeat.
2) To kill Baal quickly, use a high CB weapon on switch and smite the 1st 90% of his life away.
3) I've never had a problem with mana burn since most stuff dies before it gets to me. At the worst, you can solve mana burn with blue pots and/or an Insight merc.
The one legit drawback I will admit is that they are almost too easy to play and thus boring to many people.

About the only build that's overpowered is an zoomancer. Its impossible to stop once it starts rolling when backed up by a good necro.

I just messed around with a hammerdin without really knowing what I'm doing. I have really crappy gear and I just rock. Much, much, much easier than anything else I have ever played except a skelliemancer, but the skellimancer kills slower. The only beef I have with a hammerdin is that it requires even less intelligence than any other char to play. Wish it could be nerfed a bit just so that we could actually have some choices. It's even more boring than a ww-barb.

LOL. only one monster i have met immuned to hammers. Wailing Beast in Hell Disused Fane.
Other wise hammers will always be used cause ease of play and damage even with no gear.
Just look at the Ladder atm 26 Lvl 99 Palas(I'm sure all Hammerdins) no other even close except sorc at about 10 all others at 99 only about 3-6.
