Error while playing?

This is an odd problem that I have never encountered before...

While playing, generally when I try to exit or enter a game, DIablo freezes and a windows pop-up reads:

Unhandled Exception:

Access_Violation (C0000005)
---------------------------------

Why does this happen every 15-20 minutes or so? How do I stop it?
If I reinstall the game, do I lose my characters and items on Battle.net?

Please, any help or suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks!!

Characters on bnet are stored on their servers so you can reinstall without losing anything.

your sp chars are stored in the save folder under the d2 install folder

make sure your logged in as an administrator
and make sure your d2 folder isnt flagged as read only

select diabloii folder, click on file -> properties
uncheck read only -> click [ok]
apply changes to this folder, subfolders and files -> click [ok]

i did the steps ff said, but when i go back to look at the properties, 'read only' is still checked? I keep getting the Diablo exception error? Any more suggestions? I appreciate the help.

Re-install with a clean copy of d2. Delete what you have (move any single player saves elsewhere; your bnet chars won't be affected) and resinstall.

folders will always have a read only check

after you you change it chek all of the files they will not be read only
