View Full Version : New start best char to begin with to get average gear

Its been literally years since the last time ive played DII. I am so intrigued with the changes in skills and the other difficulties that i decided to get a brand new copy of DII + LoD and start all over again.
Now the changes in the game seem so mush that im having a hard time deciding what char to make first to get me started in finding some good gear. Im not talking about the very best gear in the game, with very low drop changes. Just the better then average gear thats not to hard to get.
In a case like this i used to make a sorc (not so much gear dependent) and do Mephisto runs using the teleport and the firewall over the water trick. But i dont know if this has been fixed plus you seem to get a temp ban for making to many game one after another.
So in short. Without any gear to start with. What would be the easiest class to level to around 80-90 to do MF runs? And what would be the best mobs to kill during such a MF run?

You needn't browse further than 2 or 3 pages to find the exact same question answered there. Otherwise the search function might help you out.
And welcome to the forums, watch your belongings here as they seldom last 2 days.

Thanks for the welcome. I actually did exactly what you said, but i didn't find the answer i was looking for. Also this isn't called the "Newcomer Forum" for nothing right?
But maybe i wasn't to clear with the question. I am not looking for a leveling guide. I am not looking for the "best" MF char because i dont have the gear for that. The post a few pages down about low level MF runs was a bit helpful. But what i really want to know is what the easiest class is to do these runs when starting from scratch?
PS. If you've seen this answered just recently i would love a link to it because i could not find it, thanks.

I'm too lazy to find the links...
Best non-item dependent characters would be the sorceress, as teleport makes the runs just so much easier. A few options would be the pure Blizzard, Meteorb or Blizzballer builds. Guides are in the Sorceress forum.
You can play self found and still get decent killing speed. Places to MF once you're done questing would be:
Andariel, Mephisto, Pindleskin, the Pits, Ancient Tunnels and the WSK. All very easy to get to, with the last three being level 85 areas. To avoid being temp banned do several (or all) of these places each game and you shouldn't have a problem.

That's a good idea, but use meteor instead of firewall. Since 1.10 there are skill synergies and fireball and meteor synergize each other while there's so synergy for firewall. A frozen orb+fireball+meteor sorc with maxed fire mastery and a few points in cold mastery as well as the usual one point investments in teleport, warmth, static field and frozen armor will be excellent versus Mephisto, Andariel, Ancient Tunnels, Pindleskin and Eldritch.

Thanks for the replies. A fire based sorc still looks like the best way to go, to bad there are mostly lightning based strats here (http://strategy.diabloii.net/searchcat.php?cid=39) .
I did a bit more reading and if i can believe this forum a Hammerdin (http://strategy.diabloii.net/news.php?id=502) could be a good choice too. No need to worry about damage there but mana and cast speed might be a problem, without the right items.

Mana rings and a Spectral Shard are easy to come by.

Hammerdins are a little more item dependent than sorceresses, just so you know.

One character that deserves a mention on this is the fishiemancer, you will find the guide in necro stickies, can do well whitout gear at all or with very crapy gear.

True, however the sorceress is much faster doing MF runs on bosses, which is what the OP mentioned they would be doing.
And you can't say get an Enigma, as the OP is starting from scratch.
Fishy necro is great character, but without enigma or Naj's puzzler staff on switch, takes a while to get to bosses because of no teleport. Awesome for area clearing, though. Good starter character because you can wear mostly magic find gear without hurting your effectiveness or survivability much.

i would say start working on a blizzballer or meteorb sorc, those usually have the fastest clear times on the best mf areas. and moat trick meph using blizzard or meteor these days.

I have never understood the need to mention a rather hard-to-find elite set item for the TP charges, when a humble Staff of Teleportation (shoppable from act 3 Normal) can do the same job. Or, some substantial circlet/amulet gambling you are probably doing anyway has good chance to net an item with TP charges that doesn´t use up the shield slot.

Naj's Puzzler has far more charges AFAIK :wink3:
The level of teleport is irrelevant, of course, as the only difference would be the lower mana consumption and using items from charges doesn't cost mana anyway.
I forgot about the shoppable staffs, because I haven't found any when shopping yet, probably also because I put it out of my mind since I don't want to lose my shield slot where a huge part of my resistances are and because I already have three teleport amulets I don't want to use because my fast cast rate is too low to blind teleport safely anyway. I am trying to trade for a wizard spike to put on switch to boost me to at least 63% FCR breakpoint, but teleport for its own sake without the FCR -- and maybe max block and/or fast hit recovery gear -- to back it up seems like more trouble than it's worth. Until a necro is decently equipped, teleporting to bosses doesn't seem useful to me anyway, leaving him far better suited for area clears than, say, quick Mephisto runs.

Check out the sorceress guides in the sorceress forum.

Basicly you want a dual element sorceress if you want to run multiple areas/bosses. Meteor-Orb is a tried and true build (you will actually use fireball more than meteor in area runs.) I am partial to Bilzzard-firewall using Glacial Spike as the main synergy to blizzard. GS freezes monsters for more safety and the blizzard is still powerful enough to take down Mephisto quickly.
Check out the Arreat summit for useful runewords, including Insight.

An assassin build that can magic find untwinked is a lightning sentry-fireblast trapper. I just use one point in shadow master, but below is an excellent guide. They are better for area runs than boss runs. She is good at Chaos Sanctuary runs (level 85 area + Diablo) and cow runs (if you are careful with death sentry and shadow use.) Gems, charms, and jewels from cows can gain you wealth fairly quickly.

Running level 85 areas can get you any item in the game. The mauseleum by Blood Raven and the Ancient Tunnels in Act2 Lost City have slow undead and are good for cold based sorceresses to run (although not for trappers-lightning immunes.)
