On the Arreat Summit site, you can see the armor types and shield types listed. There is a column in which both armor and shields are defined as being either
"light"
"medium"
or "heavy".
Does this actually mean anything?
Additionally, there is a column for shields in which the blocking level is an integer in square brackets, e.g. [10].
What is that supposed to mean?
thank you
Medium armor gives you a 5% faster run/walk penalty, heavy armor a 10% penalty (same for shields).
If you take 30 for pala, 25 for assa/barb/ama and 20 for druid/necro/sorc and you add the number between square brackets you get the base blocking value of that particular shield.

Thanks I never knew that! Where do you find that stuff? I could have sworn I read through the whole darn manual and all of Arreat as well...!

Where do you find that stuff? I could have sworn I read through the whole darn manual and all of Arreat as well...!Well, for starters, the manual was out of date and incorrect when the game was released. Since then it's steadily become more and more out of date. Arreat Summit is also notoriously for being hit and miss on its accuracy. That said, if you hang out in the forums, you'll start to pick up all the info. It's spread around in various places.
