Is there really any difference between the two other than getting your name in a hall of fame thingy? Which is more popular? Which should I start a new char on?

non ladder is populated with all of the stuff from previous ladder seasons

there are ladder only gear, items and runewords
nm/hell monsters have slightly more life than nl and better ai
but its worth it since ladder has less dup'd items

So, deciding which one to play is pretty much how hard you want to work  But I think it's worth it.

I say this everytime sombody asks:

Once you started playing NL and find out you can't make the handy runewords you go :banghead: and :duh:. Both result in :brainiac: eventually....

NL can be alright if your already rich. If your starting out with nothing, you might as well play ladder.

yes yes yes

everyone listen to CC

Aside from the tasty ladder-only runewords (two of which are quite cheap), special uniques, and cube recipes, there's another reason. Most all the players trading here in the diabloii.net trade forums are ladder, probably 90% if I had to guess. Go look for yourself. Every thread that is titled [L] is ladder.

Of course, if you like spamming all the channels with a trade message, dealing with daydreamers, or with people who don't even know what they want to trade for, then by all means play NL. :p

It doesn't matter where you play, you'll still have to deal with this.
