I'm in SP Hell for the first time and I don't have Iron Maiden but I'm taking serious damage when I Frenzy on the undead. I look at their stats and they have only cold resist, no life tap or anything special.

what else could be doing that and how can you tell a monster has it (besides the obvious way)

I'm not sure if any monsters have that kind of property... could it be because you can't life leech on undead?

If a monster has life tap or thorns, would it show up under their name?

No, but you'd see either the Thorns aura around the feet or the IM curse above the head if either of those were in effect.

I had this happen in a classic game. I was in nightmare act 3 fighting that super unique thorn hulk guy at the entrance to lower kurast. I whirled through the pack once and practically died. A few seconds and several pots later and I had it down to just me and the unique guy. Every time I whirled him I almost died, and once or twice I actually did die. No thorns. No IM. I also didn't really do a heck of a lot of damage to him. Maybe a sliver of life a whirl. Eventually I just gave up and skipped on by him. Haven't had it happen since but it was kind of funky. Nothing to do with the undead, though. I suspect my situation was some kind of bug.

the guy at the entrance to LK is always LE so you were probably getting hit by charged bolts

Stormtree- he is always Lightning Enhanced (LE) and if he is both LE and Fire Enhanced he can be a real problem...

Well he must have had a special brand of LE that time cause it hasn't happened before or since and I've dealt with plenty of LE creatures. And before someone decides to ask, no, he didn't have conviction on.

I have had the same thing happen, when you hit in the middle and set off the CB's you instantly absorb all of them. (This is why I don't just whirl the middles anymore)
