create a character

go outside and start killing things & doing the quests.

**** will drop from things you kill. trade your **** for other peoples **** until you have nice **** for your characters of choice.

No No the best way is like this.

-join a game where people look busy, especially if you see a high level character. Start begging for free stuff. They like it if you spam the entire screen. When they squelch you, exit and rejoin. when they eventually give you some free, go sell it for gold immedately.
-then start begging for a rush. be sure to steal any gold colored items that drop. if they don't rush you fast, call them a newb.
-after you get rushed, start begging for cs runs and cow leveling. Trust me people love when you beg.
-after you level up, you join games with lower levels than you, and pk them over and over. It is important not to let them get thier body. If they rejoin with higher level you should call them newb.

That's how this game is played.

Well, basically what mephistopholez said. And be nice to other people, it pays off in the end.
I saw you posted also in the newcomer forum and suggest you read the stickies there. As I see it there are two ways for beginning that game.
Either start up a magic find character to build up some wealth (some guides in the aforementioned stickies) or take a class that does appeal most to you for fun. Browse through the guides in the forums for that class so that you don´t have to restart your character once you reach hell.
