View Full Version : Good and Cheap Weapons

I'm asking for some suggestions here. I'm making another conc barb. This will be my first one since the ladder reset, and I'm still rather light on items. What I'm looking for are some suggestions on some weapons that I can pick up for a handful of pgems or so. Here's the criteria:
1. I'm currently using Swordguard as my weapon. So we're basically looking at elite versions of weapons. Swordguard is kind of a novelty item, but it is useful for a conc barb. The problem is the cost to up it to the elite version is prohibitively expensive for me. (I don't have a Lum or a Pul presently, although I suppose I theoretically could find one eventually.)
2. I'm using a shield, so the weapon can be any sword, but only one handed versions of axes and mace class weapons. Obviously, no polearms or spears. I've already used a variety of weapons, and I currently have a point in sword, mace and axe mastery, so I have no great preference for a specific type of weapon, only that it is one handed.
3. Since I'm nearing the point where I'm going to start to pump a mastery, I'm looking for the choice to be what I stay with for the rest of the game.

Heya,
I would suggest you hold off on up'ing anything. There's a lot of fantastic weapons you can use that are dirt cheap and way faster than a Swordguard. You want higher speed for your attacks since they're one at a time, and I would suggest you consider things like Deadly Strike & Crushing Blow to be added with your weapon & gear, it really helps take things down faster.
If you have very little resource, I would suggest you walk away from Swords. Unique and Set swords are generally bad in terms of actually getting them do well for you, unless you're taking about Lightsaber or Azurwrath. You can get Saber for pgems, but the Azur one will cost you more. Really, swords are made with runewords. Oath would be the budget awesome sword to make. Passion is also a `budget' one but personally, I would just skip it and try hard to make Oath. That's a cheap super sword. Of course you can make an Oath Axe or Mace too. But this is going to be expensive for you since you don't even have Pul and these need a Mal.
So that said, I would divert your attention to better weapons that cost nothing. Here's a great example: Butcher's Pupil. It's fast (has good IAS). It's got Deadly Strike & Open Wounds. It is a ~140 damage one hander. And the REQs are actually very low. It's also indestructable, so no reparing. If you want to up a weapon and you're on a tight budget, I would up this puppy and Shael it. You can probably get one for 1 to 3 pgems. In fact, I'd give it to you free if you wanted it now, they're very common and very good for budget folks.
Other options:
Razor's Edge - It's an axe that no one uses, so you can get it probably for 1 pgem, or free even maybe. Just ask in the trade forum. It's got great damage and high deadly strike and even more IAS. It's the Pupil +1 if you can get it. It's great and very, very cheap.
Nord's Tenderizer - It's just a club that does a lot of damage and has elemental damage too. It's pretty good and it won't cost you but a pgem or two at best.
Daemon Limb - This one trades more often due to it having a great enchant charge to it. But otherwise, no one uses them so they're cheap to trade for. 3 or 4 pgems at best. Great damage, enchant for bigger AR and damage, and overall just a nice weapon for pounding on things with. It self repairs so if you can get an Eth one, all the more damage and it won't bust on you if you let it repair now and then between battles.
Doombringer - This weapon is awesome for a budget player. Most people use runewords, so good old Doom is cheap as dirt. Pgems will buy it. 3 or 4 tops. Seriously. Just go to the trade forum and ask for one.
-- Ultimately you can get any weapon almost except the top tier runewords because Pgems are currency and buy everything practically. Unique weapons like those listed above are peanuts and the Pgems are worth more in supply. So if you have ~10 Pgems, you can get basically any Unique one-hand-weapon that you want in the game. Use the trade forum here, you will get what you want fast.
Cheers, :)

Ditto the above poster
to throw a few more out :
Headstriker, over 100% deadly strike at higher level makes this a great sword to use ( i like it better then pupil)
Aldurs mace is nice for leveling, pop a sheal or two or amn/sheal and you've a pretty good beat stick for awhile.
If you dont mind situational 2 handers it's very hard to beat an insight wep made in a strong base like
use the s hander unless your getting swarmed and then hit w to switch to your shield/1 hander.
elder staff/ archon staff
threshers
crpytic axes
it has massive damage/ar and critical strike for nothing but a sol/tir rune (ral and tal are given to you for rescue of the soldiers.)
sup aldeth! I solo'd this patch/conc with gimmershred as my endgame/hell weapon. I loved it.

Sorry for the thread resurrection, but I've been away awhile, and I'm just getting back now. As for the replies (which I'm thankful for):

I don't even know what that weapon is.
I've looked through the other weapons listed, and although Doombringer has the highest base damage by far, I think I like the mods on Nord's Tenderizer quite a bit. I'll have to start upping dex as soon as I make the switch to another weapon though, as Swordguard is giving me a huge boost to my chance to block.
There is one more weapon that caught my eye for the large amount of elemental damage that may help a lot - Baranar's Star. Is this affordable via pgems?

Heya,
Yes. All those unique weapons can be had for just a handful of pgems. Bar's Star is an amazing weapon and you can get it for virtually nothing. Just make a trade thread in the trade forum and ask for it. Someone will probably let it go for 5~10 pgems?
If you want a tenderizer, I'll give you one.
Cheers,
Thanx to Runewords u can have a good unique weapon for pgems.. As a barb, i would pick Doombringer.. Stats are just made for a barb and any big sword looks good. Baranars Star is also quite good. Most of the elite weapons can get u far in a Hellgame.
Ow i see that u put some points in mace aswel. Horizons Scourge is something u want to try out.. Its fast and gives good raw damage.

Just one for now. I switch around weapons a lot in normal and nightmare, using whatever I happen to find. Because I do this, it usually requires me to spend one skill point in each of the one handed weapon masteries. (I don't rush my characters, so I actually spend some time in the first two difficulty levels.) However, once I move on the hell difficulty, a proper end-game weapon is in order. But because of that, once I have all my one-point wonders and skills done, I work on a mastery last.
I don't have a Horizon's Scourge, but IIRC, it has one of the highest character level requirements in the game, doesn't it? 80-something I think?
Yes its high, thats the downside i guess
