I hear people talk about Bec-De-Corbins a lot as good things to use. As well as Executioner's swords.
What confuses me is that these are the *exceptional* versions of those weapons, not the elite versions. I am a newbie, and hence easily confused, but what am I missing here -- are the exceptional versions better than the elites?

Ofcourse not:) They must be fooling u (i hope for them)

only exceptional that is used for a high RW and is actually very good is the Zweihander. Its -10base speed makes it a good option for Grief. But Grief only since the damage isnt high enough for a %ED runeword.

But those 2 weapons u mentioned are nothing compared to their elite versions.

I can't imagine why people would be telling you that.

The only reason why I would think that the Exceptional versions would possibly be 'better' would be because the STR, DEX, and level requirements needed to equip them would be lower than with the Elite versions.

But why waste your runes (that you worked hard to find/cube up- or that you traded some great gear to get) by putting them in anything less than Elite equipment? You'd be missing out on what is essentially free damage by making a great runeword in a wienie-weapon.

Go for the Elite version of weapons- you'll be glad you did.

Ohhhh now I see. I really tried to use the "search" function and that's what it got me.
I used to play D2 classic years ago, quit, and just came back recently ... and I could have sworn there were elite items back then. But maybe I am wrong....
