View Full Version : Silence as a caster runeword?

I recently found a 6 os ethereal crystal sword, and was pondering the uses of such a weapon. I immediately went to Arreat Summit and started browsing for possible runewords, and I ran across Silence, a long forgotten runeword that was once considered godly. I was looking through the stats, noticing the +2 skills, 75% all resist, 20% fhr, and the 20% mf, and it occurred to me, that this might not make such a bad weapon for a sorceress or other caster who needs more resistances. Would only cost a vex and ist.

Does the absence of faster cast rate destroy the usefulness factor? Would it make a good switch? Not worth the runes? Style++? What is everyone's thought on this?

The FCR is a killer, but if you can hit the requisite BP without any on weapon FCR then I think you would win the style point derby.

Yeah, but usually a simple Wizarspike beats Silence for a caster.

Edit: Silence works much better in a bow (http://forums.diabloii.net/showthread.php?t=457635):wink3:

Depends on the Sorc, if a cold Sorc, you only really need 63% FCR, which can be gotten easy enough without weapon. So it is possible to use such a weapon on such a Sorc.

The thing is, it costs a Vex, Hoto also takes a Vex, has 3 Skills, 40 FCR, 30-40 Res, and just has more gravy mods on it. So you are basically only getting 35-45 more res.

But, you also gain more FCR with Hoto, and can use the places that you would need for FCR with Silence, for res or MF. With just Hoto and say viper, your set at the 63% BP. with Silence, you need like Viper, Mages, and 2 10FCR rings, which means no Chancies, or Nagel's or whatever.

Style points would be awarded though.

It's basically a spirit where you exchange FHR, mana, vitality and FCR for resists and a little MF. Considering the cost of silence I'm not sure that is a good deal.

There is nothing stylish about silence for a caster. It doesn't do anything particularly clever (like for example a CM for a lightning sorc does) and for a caster there are better ways to spend a Vex.

Silence is pretty much a Mage (pally mage) weapon... You can just go for 75 FCR and then use Silence for massive stacked resists, skills and decent charge damage.
