Let's say I do find a eth Thresher...............how do I get 4 socket in?

eth Thresher itself is hard enough, what's the chance it get 4 socket when it's max is 6?

my eyes hurt looking at cow loots.

I have a feeling that someone may say: save it for Infinity!!

I'm afraid there is no better answer here then to simply tell you

you have to find it. I'd suggest running cows/pits and area clears for the best chance of a good 40's Bean pole dropping.

You can also use the cube recipe:

1 Ral Rune + 1 Amn Rune + 1 Perfect Amethyst + Normal Weapon = Socketed Weapon of same type
The number of sockets created will vary. The item must be normal and unsocketed. Low-quality items and superior items do not work. The item gets 1-6 sockets, randomly. However, the number of sockets is then restricted by the maximum number of sockets that base item with that ilvl can have. For example, if you have an item that can only have 2 sockets, there's a 5/6 chance of getting 2 sockets and a 1/6 chance of getting 1 socket.

then if all else fails do a couple more runs, and trade up those pgems you found along the way. 40's poles are pretty common in game. Even weekend warriors should be able to turn one up without to much effort :hanky:

How many sockets an item can have is based on the Item Level (ilvl).

I did some research for you.

I wasn't sure if you meant a Giant Thresher or just a normal Thresher so I listed both.

Max Sox 1-25 26-40 41+

Thresher | 5 | 3 | 4 | 5 |

Giant Thresher | 6 | 3 | 4 | 6 |

So, to get 4 sox into a Thresher or Giant Thresher, they will have to be level 26-40.

The only places to find level 26-40 Threshers and Giant Threshers are as follows:

Act 5 Normal
Act 1 Nightmare
Normal Cows

If you didn't find your eth Thresher in one of those places, you can't get 4 sox in it using the Socket Quest. If you did get it in one of those places, do the socket quest and use Larzuk to get 4 sox into it.

Eth is one thing, normal is another. I would start simple and just get the highest end 4 open socket elite polearm you can. Personally I favor the Eth Col. Voulge over the Thresher. Plus, Col. Voulge can only get 4 sockets max, and has higher damage (and higher weapons range). It's a better weapon over all. I don't see the fuss of using a Thresher unless you're in the low 60's still or something. And if you're trying to use Insight as soon as possible, just make it in any polearm you can get your hands on that has 4 sockets.

The faster option is to trade for one. There's always hell games with "4os XXX" listed. Likewise, the trade forum here has them. Just ask for one. They're not expensive.

In fact, I probably have a few (non eth). I'd even give you one.

Cheers,

Thank you MasterBeef, I'll keep my eyes open when I'm in those areas. I was in hell finding polearms, and those weren't going to work.

Like MalVeauX said, I need a Insight for early+mid games, so I'll just buy some 4 sock polearm and start enjoy using one

the only problem with this statement is the fact that these elite polearms do not drop this early in the game.

The quality level (qlvl) of the item is a factor of where an item can drop (and this info for elite polearms can be found here (http://www.battle.net/diablo2exp/items/elite/polearms.shtml)). I don't recall the exact mechanics, but I'm pretty sure that the area-level will need to be somewhere close to that qlvl (the info is probably in the Item Generation Tutorial here on Diabloii.net, but I haven't read that guide for so long I don't remember this detail).

In other words, although that theoretical value is entirely accurate, the game mechanics are going to prohibit it from happening. My advice is to run an area with high-monster density somewhere later in the game (Act3, Spider Forest, Hell seems to have lots of baddies that die easily) - and don't wear MF while doing it. Then use the cube recipe that Master Zap mentioned whenever you can.

Cheers,
threshers and giant threshers attack faster and have lower requirements, the more your merc attacks the more he leeches. the only reason everyone uses them (CV's) is that they are guaranteed 4 sockets. This is why most threshers and giant threshers with four sockets cost more to trade.

Admittedly my 'research' was a quick glance at ilvl versus arealevel

Don't mercs always have the same attack speed no matter the speed of the weapon?

I always thought so.

I don't think so. I do know, for certain, that weapons of different speeds have different IAS breakpoints (important if your merc has IAS in the helm or armour). The info is in the breakpoints/etc. stickied thread...

Edit: Looking through that thread, the base-attack speed is also affected by the weapon speed. Slower weapons = slower merc attacks.

The best 2 places I personally know of to find Eth Threshers (and those with 4os already in them) are The Pit-Hell and Arcane Sanctuary-Hell...some other good areas are Worldstone-Hell and Ancient Tunnels-Hell...as well as anywhere in Act 5 of Hell...however, most of the ones i've found on closed were in the 2 places mentioned, and not because i frequent them often..in fact probably less than some of the others..I favor The Pit as I have found alot of very nice elite unq and other os elites there as well..i.e. 3os Superior Archon Plates and Dusk Shrouds..In fact this ladder alone I have found one 13% sup Archon, one 15% 3os Superior Dusk shroud and 2 other 14 and 15% sup Dusks down there...As well as a few Threshers, Eth Col Volgues ect..

Expect to find a decent item every 10 runs there...and a really sweet one about 1/200..Good Hunting

And if you're on playing SP you can try our rack running. I have a rack that drops Threshers quite frequently in my LK map (hoping to get lucky and get eth Reapers  ). I now have more than enough eth Threshers...
