Merc MF Question

I perused the site and didn't see the answer to this so apologies if it is in an FAQ I missed. If I attack a monster then just before it dies switch to higher MF gear but my merc makes the actual kill, what MF% is added to the mercs: the early stuff that did most of the damage or what I was carrying when the kill was made?
